I had told Cook that I would do the shopping today. I needed to get out of the house and clear the cobwebs from my head that always seemed to accompany bookkeeping. So I armed myself with wicker baskets, and headed down to La Eventaire.
Half an hour after I stepped out of my carriage found my form in front of a vegetable stall, picking out potatoes. I finished chatting with the owner and paid for my produce. As I turned away with a smile on my face, I was jostled slightly by a passerby and the wicker gave on my basket. The potatoes broke free and rolled everywhere.

I'd been walking around, looking for some small carved things that tended to peak my interest when I noticed a girl gathering up spilled potatoes that had tumbled from the bottom of a basket she was carrying. Picking up one of the vegetables that had rolled near my foot I gave her an encouraging smile and headed over with the potato still in my hand. "you look like you could use some help."

I was chasing the potatoes and trying to reorganize my remaining basket to fit everything and not bruise the fruit when a man's voice interrupted. I looked up into a handsome face. "Thank you," I said with a smile, blushing at my predicament. "Apparently my potatoes don't want to be eaten tonight."

"yes, I've heard of runaway vegetables before," I told her with a chuckle, handing her a few more of the scattered tubers that had rolled beyond her immediate reach. "A survival trait, I suppose- no one likes to be skinned and eaten, no matter the method." She was a pretty girl and not as young as I'd first thought, which was interesting. "I'm Landis, it's nice to meet you."

I chuckled softly, charmed by his casual handsomeness. "Juliette. Thank you for your help Landis," I said, putting the last of the potatoes in my now overloaded basket and then holding it carefully. "It was a truly gentlemanly thing to do."

"I do try," I replied with a nod. "It's good to know your name- and unless my guess, you're going to need some help in order to get that basket anywhere that isn't back on the ground. Would you object to any more help?"

I glanced down at the heavy basket cradled awkwardly in my arms and chuckled ruefully. "No, I don't think I would object. I would have trouble getting this back to my carriage."

"Then let me take it and I think I can manage," I offered with a charming smile and a raised brow, holding out my arms.

"Thank you," I repeated with a shy smile, carefully handing it over. "Do you often save damsels in distress?"

Taking the basket carefully- I didn't want this one to break as well- I lifted it moderately easily and smiled. "On the occasion I find people who need help I try to do so," I replied easily. "But saving pretty girls is at times the most fun."

I blushed at his compliment, looking away from his blue-grey eyes. "Thank you, you're very kind," I said, his words causing me to smile. He seemed at ease with himself without being arrogant, a trait I envied.

"Thank you," I said, watching her for a moment- her flush was very becoming as it spread across her pale cheeks. "So, where are we going with these vegetables?"

"Oh yes, I'm sorry. Right this way," I said, feeling a little flustered as I began to lead him to where I had left the carriage. It was a few minutes walk, I had wound my way into the market. "It's just over on Apple Street."

"I know where that is- my brothers and I used to run around there when we were children and would visit the City," I told her with a comfortable smile, hoping to ease her mood again because she seemed to be nervous.

"Where do you call home?" I asked, my flustered feeling easing as he seemed not to notice.

"Siovale- but the City has been very homey to me thus far," I said as I looked around at the bustle of the people selling and buying wares. "The people are a lot alike most times, it's just there's more of them with more to get done."

"Yes, folk are folk no matter where you are," I agreed with a smile. I wondered a little about Landis. He didn't strike me as a peer, but his earlier comments about visiting the City...

"It's comforting, after a fashion," I said, stepping carefully to keep from bumping into anyone too hard with the basket. Juliette seemed more comfortable with me, which was a blessing, and I could tell she was both intelligent and friendly.

I chuckled. "It's nice. It makes up for all the extra lordlings strutting about," I said with a smile.

"Yes, like me," I replied with a light laugh of my own. "But I try not to get in the way and make a pest of myself. It isn't so hard, I always wonder why some of those other lordlings can't manage it."

"I'm not sure, but you should ask my brother," I said with a smile. "Some days he seems to be the epitome of a lordling."

He worded his response very oddly. "Could be?" I inquired, looking at him with a puzzled expression.

"They both died many years ago," I replied with a smile, beyond feeling guilty about it at this point. "When we were children."

"Thank you." I repeated his words then tried to change the subject, not wanting to dwell on my father's death. "My carriage isn't much further, you'll be able to put that down soon."

"That's good to know- you do seem to buy a good number of groceries for your household,' I replied with a good-natured grin. "Are you planning a party or simply stocking up?"
