I blushed and looked down. "Not always. Maybe I'm just not smart and pretty enough for that," I said, voice soft.

"Of course you are- take my word for it," I replied with a grin and in complete sincerity.

I blushed even more and shook my head. "You're sweet Landis, thank you."

"I'm just honest," I told her with a grin that I hoped would help her understand that I was truly being sincere. "I would ask you out to dinner but with your shopping it looks like you're planning to cook."

"Well," I said shyly, pausing in my words as we came to my carriage. "I could make you dinner. It would only be fair, after all your help."

"I would like that," I replied with an easy smile. "Though I'd in return ask if you'd like to have a quick drink with me first, or after, whichever you prefer. I'm rather enjoying our conversation."

I blushed at that. "I'm glad. There is a cafe up the road, if you'd like," I replied.

"That sounds very nice," I agreed as I carefully placed the basket of produce inside the carriage on the floor where it would be out of the way and moderately secure. "What do you like to drink?"

I watched as he took care with my groceries, and couldn't help but smile. I spoke to my driver, asking him to take the basket back to the house and then return. I didn't want the meat to spoil.
"Wine, tea, fruit juice," I replied with a little smile as the carriage pulled away. "You?"

"I tend to like everything, especially when it's enjoyed with a new friend. I do have a bit of a guilty indulgence for mead and dark teas though," I told her with a grin as I offered her my arm.

I took his arm, chuckling at his answer. "Those hardly seem like truly guilty indulgences," I replied with a smile, a hint of a tease entering my voice.

"Not as guilty as some, but perhaps just guilty enough for me- especially when most of those I know have indulgences like stronger liquor and carousing," I replied with a chuckle at my own tameness in some ways. "Though I am a bit wild at times it is in a different way. What of you- any particularly interesting indulgences, guilty or not?" My own tone was also gently teasing and I thought she would understand the jest in my voice. At the moment I could only hope she liked me as much as I did her.

We were talking quite normally, but I couldn't help the little frisson of interest that kept a faint blush on my cheeks, even when there was nothing to blush about. "I love to dance," I replied with a small smile. "That is my true guilty pleasure."

"Well, I practice quite a bit. I find it hard to hold onto my worries when I'm dancing," I replied with a soft, fond smile as I thought on my favourite past time.

"I feel much the same when I'm on a walk," I said with understanding, noting the softening of her features when she talked about something with which she was comfortable. It made her look even prettier than she usually did- and she was quite lovely as it was. "Though I can dance a bit I think walking and climbing is still more my speed- if I'm clumsy I'm the only one who sees it."

"You go alone?" I asked curiously. In fact, I was becoming far too curious about Landis. But he was so sweet and handsome, and I felt a little tug towards him.

"Quite often- I haven't found many who enjoy going with me, it seems like too much work," I replied with a smile. "Have you ever been hiking?"

"Not in a few years. It was something my father used to do with us. Here we are," I said as we came to the cafe, grateful for the distraction, minor though it was.

She seemed to be very relieved to see the cafe and I wondered at it, then remembered that she had lost her father recently and the pain was probably very fresh. "Perhaps, if you kept up the tradition, it would make it seem as though he were closer," I suggested gently. "The next time I go I'll send you an invitation and if you don't accept I'll understand- and just think of something new to invite you to. Is that alright?"

"Nothing will be like what it was, and not only because he's gone," I replied quietly before opening the door and entering the establishment. "But please, do still send me an invitation. I would love to go if I have the time."

Reaching out my hand I held the door for her as she went in, then moved in behind her; with the hour the place wasn't terribly busy as yet but may become so within a time. "Nothing is ever really the same- but you will find an invitation, of that I can assure you," I told her, smiling widely. "Where would you like to sit?"

"What about over there, by the window?" I suggested. I was grateful he hadn't told me off for being negative. "We can watch the world go by."

"That sounds very nice- I often enjoy doing so," I replied, taking her hand lightly and leading her over to the table she'd indicated before pulling out her hair with a smile.

The surprising touch of his hand against mine made my cheeks flush with pleasure, and I desperately prayed that I wasn't reading too much into it. It felt very good to be interested in a man again.
"So do I," I agreed as I sat gracefully.

I wished I'd stroked her hand while I still had it, to show some sort of interest as well as just to see how she'd react- but perhaps later. Smiling happily I pushed her chair in gently before moving to sit across from her and meet her gaze interestedly. "We seem to have at least a few things in common- I'm glad for that."

He was glad for that? But, he couldn't possibly be interested in me.
I wasn't sure how to answer him, but was saved by the arrival of the server. "What would you like to drink?" I asked, leaving the decision in his hands.

"Wine sounds good- and I think I recall you saying you liked that as well," I said with a smile as I hoped I wasn't wrong. "But which kind?"

I asked the server what they had, and he rattled off the list. I named the best, and he left with a nod and a smile.
"I hope you don't mind," I said to Landis somewhat belatedly, having learned how easy it was for a man's pride to be stung.

"Not at all- I'm no expert when it comes to wine," I told her confidently and without resentment; it was better that the right person chose than the wrong person and a finer experience would come for it. "I'm glad you picked because there's a good chance I could have chosen something pretty ghastly."
