"Then it would appear that we aren't criminals," I said with a little, crooked smile.

"Not in the slightest," I said more cheerfully, lightly squeezing her hand in a reassuring fashion. "All people have in life is trying to live in the best way they can- and in happiness is the only way to accomplish such a thing."

I took a deep drink of my wine to muster the courage to say what I did then. "In the short time I've known you Landis, you've made it easy to be happy. If it's not too early to say, I hope we will be friends. You're a good influence." My mouth quirked in a smile at the last as I met his eyes gain.

"I hope we will be friends as well," I agreed, smiling as she did though a bit more widely. "I must have been very good today to have earned the karmic right to run into you. I've lost a few friends recently with all of the events and I'm glad to have found such a wonderful and pretty one to swell the ranks."

That was the second time I had heard the phrase, and I still didn't know what it meant. I frowned a little, colour high on my cheeks. "Karmic right?"

"It's an idea that if someone does good things then good things will come to them," I explained. "In Bhodistan the idea of karma is an important part of their religion and I think it's an interesting thought. It means that I must have done some very good things in order to earn the privilege of meeting you."

I blushed again with a smile. "If you keep this up, my cheeks will be a permanent pink," I commented.

"You could just call it a flush of health," I teased lightly, gently stroking the back of her hand with my thumb. "I think it looks very nice on you."

"Why do I have the feeling that you would have compliment my colouring even while I was abed with la scarlatine?" I asked with a wry smile and a soft laugh.

"No, if you were blushed with la scarletine I would bring you soup," I told her in all sincerity and good humor. "I'm simple, but I think I can tell the difference between those things."

I chuckled at his reply. "No doubt you could. What kind of soup?" I asked with a grin.

"Chicken and dumplings, of course," I told her with a smile. "My mother taught me that it was the best soup for anyone feeling ill and would help them rest."

"Sounds like your mother and my mother would have gotten along just fine," I said with a laugh. "I swear, I lived on that stuff for a solid week."

"Your mother's soup is probably as good as my mother's so I have little doubt it was a hardship for you," I said brightly. "But then, I miss my mother's soup when I'm feeling unwell."

"Well, next time just send me a note, and I'll do as good of an imitation of a mother's soup as I can," I said with a smile.

Her words caused my smile to soften slightly though it remained as cheerful as it had been before. "That's the nicest offer anyone's made me in a very long time," I said sincerely.

"Well, I like cooking, and I'm sure you like drinking soup. So everyone wins," I said with a grin.

"I'm sure it will be fantastic," I told her, having complete confidence in her abilities. "And I do happen to love soup."

"Good," I said with a happy smile, then took the last sip of my wine. "I just hope you like the rest of my cooking as much as you think you'll like my soup."

"Oh good, I can burn the potatoes tonight," I replied with a cheeky smile. "Speaking of which, are you almost done? I'm not trying to rush you, but I do have dinner to make after all."

"I was waiting for you," I replied with a similarly cheeky smile, pushing my glass away from me.

I chuckled and shook my head, leaving coin on the table for our drinks. "Well come on then," I said, teasing him as I stood.

"Of course," I replied, eyes flashing- I would have paid for the drinks but she reached it first and I wasn't too proud to let the matter lie. I'd simply pick up the tab next time- assuming there was a next time. I could hope, couldn't I? Standing and returning her smile I offered her my arm with a playful expression.

I took his arm with a smile and let him lead me out of the cafe. Once outside, I spotted my driver waiting patiently across the street. "There's my carriage," I told him.

The driver hopped down to open the door for us, and I smiled my thanks to him. "Home please," I requested, then let Landis hand me up into the cab.

With a smile I helped her into the carriage politely, then climbed in after she'd settled herself comfortably.
