I chuckled, glad that he seemed to be easy going. I'd had enough of high maintenance relationships. "We have a vineyard on the estate. My parents made sure I learned about wines."

"I can safely say we never had any vineyards- but we had pear trees," I replied with a grin. "And a rural sort of liquor from them, but it's not so much made to taste good as to prove it can be done, I think. The land is pretty rocky and hard to manage at times but it's so beautiful it makes up for the problems."

I chuckled at his quip about the real reason behind the liquor. "And it's home. So it will always hold a special place in your heart."

"Exactly. And it's a place full of memories," I agreed whole-heartedly. "I think everyone feels that way about their home, whether or not they admit it."

I smiled. "I think so too."
The server returned with the bottle of wine. I tasted it and then nodded my approval before taking it upon myself to pour a glass for Landis. "What shall we toast to?"

"I think a toast to new friends sounds perfect," I replied with a smile, offering a hand to take the wine glass when she was ready.

I handed him one of the glasses as I smiled from his words. Raising my own glass, I echoed his words. "To new friends, ready to give their aid."

"And the pleasurable fun between the helping," I added, raising my glass to lightly tap against hers before taking a drink. "I'm very glad I met you, Juliette."

"Thank you Landis," I said with a soft smile after my drink. "I'm glad I met you too."

Smiling more widely I watched her for a moment, wondering what she was thinking before taking another drink of my own.

He studied me, and a blush rose to my skin under the scrutiny. "What?"

"I was just wondering what was going through your lovely mind," I replied softly, letting my gaze focus out for a moment as I smiled and took another sip of wine.

"Oh," I replied with another blush. "Nothing really. The notes in the wine, the atmosphere of the cafe. Nothing important."

"At least you weren't thinking of how boring I was being," I replied with a chuckle, brushing her hand lightly to try and ease her blush a bit.

I laughed softly at his jest, glancing up at his face. But then his hand brushed up against mine and my eyes found my lap again. My blush grew, but so did the shy smile. "You're certainly not boring Landis," I said, my voice soft. "And you're not the bad sort of exciting either."

"The bad sort of exciting?" I asked curiously but in a gentle tone; I didn't know if it was something she wanted to speak of at the moment.

"The kind you can't figure out if you enjoy or not," I replied, my smile turning wry. I didn't try to look up, not wanting to get emotional.

"I've always been easy to figure out- right now that seems to be a blessing," I replied gently, continuing to stroke her hand.

I glanced up into his eyes, then away again. I didn't pull away from his touches as I rather enjoyed them, but I was too shy to reciprocate.
"Forgive me, but I have been in some very complicated relationships recently. So yes, it is a blessing." I said, my voice getting softer as I spoke until my voice was barely above a whisper.

"I'm sorry to hear that you've been having trouble," I said in sincere sympathy, squeezing her hand slightly. "If I can help in some way please tell me." I had never had much relationship problems of my own but I had helped others with theirs and I didn't want to see her upset any longer.

"It is what it is. If it could be changed, I would have done so already. But thank you nevertheless for the offer," I replied with an only slightly forced smile. His honesty touched me. "You are truly kind."

"I do try- though sometimes that in itself seems to get me in trouble," I told her with a soft chuckle. "People assume that because I try to help that it means I want something."

"Nothing more than seeing others in good spirits," I replied with a smile and a brow raised in playful speculation. "Is there more I should be looking for?"

She laughed, which suggested good humor, but her words confused me a bit. "I still don't understand what you mean."

I remembered myself, and blushed. "I'm sorry, I was just teasing. I'm not very good at court flirting. I was simply trying to avoid it." I couldn't meet his eyes as I spoke those words, knowing my honest words were making a fool of me.

She blushed and grew embarrassed and I mentally kicked myself, impulsively reaching out to stroke her cheek. "I'm sorry I misunderstood," I told her in a quiet, gentle tone. "And I will admit, I was trying to flirt a little- who wouldn't with such a pretty girl? But I'm enjoying our conversation and I don't want that to stop just because I was being too forward and an ass."
