Immediately I was sorry and I looked at her apologetically. "I didn't mean that, I'm sorry near-cousin. It's never silly to want to be happy; some things in life can't be rational or they'd never be done."
Smiling sympathetically I placed a finger under her chin and drew it up so she looked me square in the eye. "Now smile, things will turn out alright in the end."

I smiled and felt a small tear fall down my cheek but wiped it away and chuckled. "I think it will." I took his hand and placed a kiss on his palm. "Thank you."

My palm tingled slightly where she kissed it and I pressed that hand to her cheek, wiping away the last bit of tear that clung to the lashes before pulling my hand away. "See, you're so much more lovely with a smile on your face. How could things turn out less than perfect for you? That would be very silly of Fate indeed."

I nodded and chuckled as he pulled back missing the warmth of another's touch. "It would be." I thought for a moment. "Though I think it would be fitting considering my family's blood line. Perhaps its Kushiel's whim that have me in such a bind?" Smiling I raised a brow and took a sip of water.

Raising a brow I took a sip of wine and noticed that she was only drinking water- hmm, curious, but not really noteworthy enough to comment on. "I think you are quite old enough to know your own whims, and besides, what have you done that would be worthy of such divine punishment? I think that you would have to relive past sins to earn that, and I don't see you as that type at all. Maybe you just need patience," I teased gently again, hoping this joke went over better than the last.

I shrugged. "Perhaps, but the gods can be cruel." Watched him carefully but smiled. "I have done nothing, but my grand mother...my true grand mother...she never really got what she deserved. In my opinon anyway."

Noticing her intense gaze on me I cocked my head sideways, a little bit confused. "To me, being locked within walls is the worst punishment that could be invented, and I didn't know her so that I could say the same. If her punishment wasn't great enough, I'm sure whatever ways she paid for her crimes were that much worse for it. She never knew her son, or her grandchildren, and that must surely hurt."
Taking another sip of wine I glanced down, wondering if I had any way of knowing what the right answer was.

I pursed my lips forward and bit my cheek. "I'm not sure that not knowing her family was punishment for her." Sighing I leaned back in my chair. "I don't like talking about her, lets change the subject. Are you living in a town home?"

Sighing a little internally at having come up with the obviously wrong answer- but, for me, the honest one- I smoothly changed gears as I smiled and answered, "Yes, my family has one, but it hasn't been used in years. Luckily it was well cared for in our absense, though everything is as it was twelve years ago. There's a lot of old memories there."

I nodded. "I'd like to see those." I said thinking about the happier of my two histories. "Many Verreuil keepsakes I'd imagine."

"A few," I said with a wider smiler; she seemed to no longer be dwelling on as many unhappy things, "And you're more than welcome to come and poke about in them any time you wish. Though quite a few of them are no more than little things from my brothers and I and mostly uninteresting."

I shrugged. "I wouldn't mind, gives me an excuse to leave my own town home. I feel so couped up there some times." Smiling I finished my sandwich and glass of water.

"I understand exactly how you feel," I said quietly, finishing my wine and thinking about the ghosts of memories the townhouse held for me. Shaking my head I returned a lighthearted grin to my face. "You should feel free to stop by whenever you are so inclined, my door is always open to you or your brother."

I smiled. "Thank you Landis, I can guarentee you that you'll see more of me." I winked with a wry grin.

"I hope so, or else I would be terribly bored and have to come and find you at some highly inconvenient time for our hike," I said with a grin. "Unless, that is, you've changed your mind or become scared of snakes."

Laughing I shook my head. "I don't scare that easily," I said raising a brow. "But I will expect you to come looking for me once and awhile. Its only fair."

"Oh of course, I'd never be unfair," I said with a wink. "It would be like tormenting a kitten or pulling on a puppy's tail."

"And I know for a fact you'd never do such a thing." I said in a teasing manner.

"Of course not, I'm a pure soul," I stated matter-of-factly, eyes twinkling. "Though in my youth I did tie a strip of fabric to a puppy's tail so it would chase it in circles and get dizzy. I felt really badly after the creature was unable to catch the tail though and untied the cloth so it could play tug-of-war with its littermates. Being mean is not something I'm very good at," I said wittily.

I chuckled at the thought, though it didn't seem too cruel it was understandable. "That does seem like you...well of what I know of you from what I've seen."

"Thank you, I guess that means I've made a good impression, I think," I said with a smile. "Now, should we sit here and chat all day, or would you rather go wander and show me the City? The last time I was here I was too young to see any of the really interesting things."

I raised a brow in thought then nodded. "I think I have time to show you around." I stood and tossed a handful of coins with the ones Delaunay had put down.
"Where would you like to start?"

Putting down a handful of coins myself I stood and grinned at Phreya childishly. "You mean you may have something better to do that spend time with a family member you'd never met before today? That's a suprise," I said as I winked and laughed lightly. "It doesn't matter where we start, I haven't really seen any of the City before, so it will all be new to me."

I chuckled and moved forward slipping my arm around his. "I could have better things to do," I teased back. "But I think I'll make an exception." I took my bags in my hand as we exited the cafe.
"There is the temple district, but its a little more seperated from Nights Doorstep and more of a walk. There are many vendors that sell many interesting things...I suggest we simple wander and I can point out things we see on the way." I smiled up at him.

"You still have the best ideas in the entire City, Phreya," I said with a grin as I led her out. "Wandering will also help me learn how to find my own way around when my legs get restless but I don't want to go into the country for a stroll or a hike. Where should we go first?"

I chuckled softly to his comment.
"Thats true, its important to know you're way around. But I think perhaps the clothier's district would be a good place to start, what do you think?"

"That sounds fine- it'll let me see exactly how out of date I am in clothing, which I'm sure will be vital to my city survival skills," I replied with a wink. "Lead the way, near-cousin."

I nodded and began to lead him toward the Clothiers district, which wasn't very far from where we were. "Do you speak with any of your other cousins?" I asked as we walked. "I mean the actual blood relatives and not just fake ones like me."

"We write back and forth about once a year- they like to keep me informed- but there are so many cousins on that side of the family I just get a general feeling of 'cousin so-and-so had a son and cousins assorted got married or started this career and so on. It's rather a lot to keep track of, especially considering I haven't met a single one," I said, chuckling. "Do you keep in touch with your other cousins?"

I shrugged. "Moderately, the Shahrizai's are always around some where so its not hard to run into some one. And the Courcels...well we see them more often but only because we're here now." I looked up at him thinking of cousins and the numerous cousins I had through countless relations.
"I think my parents would enjoy seeing you and your family. My father always speaks well of House Verreuil, I know it was hard at first when Joscelin and Phedre took my father in, but they welcomed him as they would have any other member of the family."
