It always seemed to amaze people when I showed a bit of mirthful wit- it amused me greatly, as I knew my normally solemn demeanor was to blame, rather than any judgment on their part. "Don't worry over the birds- the laughter startles some of them, but only because they're used to my own and not that of others," I explained good-naturedly. "But I am sorry for surprising you- hearing birdsong is very relaxing to me and cheers me greatly, I must admit."

“I think laughter should never be apologized for, it’s one of the great gifts in the world,” I said, smiling.

Smiling more widely I took another sip of my wine. "I quite agree," I told him honestly, then looked around the room. "I think, to humans, laughter is our birdsong."

“That’s a very good analogy,” I said, smiling. I took another sip of wine and returned my attention to the birds. “Do you spend much time up here?”

"When I can," I admitted, sitting on a nearby chaise and smiling and gesturing to the seat beside me to indicate he should sit as well. "I read in here when time allows, and sometimes I'll have one cage or other brought into the room where I am."

I took one last look around, then went to join her on the chaise. “I can see how it would be uplifting to one’s spirits to be able to have birdsong when you needed it,” I said with a smile. It really was cheerful in here.

"It's also very relaxing," I replied, feeling more at ease in the surroundings as well as the fact I was indoors, where I spent most of my time. Too long outside and my fair skin tended to burn. "But I thought I may be the only one to think so, judging by some reactions. It's too much noise at once for some people, I suppose."

“That’s their loss then. I know not everyone has the same tolerances, but this is just merry,” I said with a smile.

"It's as cheerful as the birds themselves to hear that you think so, truly," I told him with a matching smile, enough at ease with his presence and my surroundings to do so without a hint of self-consciousness.

“Do you ever sketch or paint in here?” I asked after another sip of wine.

"I never really sketched before today, and I worry about getting feather dander in the paints," I admitted. "But sometimes I'll have them brought to me while I'm doing so. Those paintings tend to use brighter colors; I guess that shows how much they raise my spirits."

“Yes, the colors an artist uses or doesn’t use express a lot about their thoughts or emotions,” I said, looking at her and smiling.

I had to think for a moment. “Usually, the colors I use are dictated by whatever I am painting,” I said. “But if I was to just pick up a palette and begin to paint, it would likely be in greens and browns, a bit of blue and white.”

"Tones of the earth and the sea," I remarked interestedly. "Depending on which shades, of course."

“Likely more earth and sky tones,” I agreed with a nod and smile. “What colors do you tend towards.”

"Greens, blues, greys and yellows," I said simply, though I echoed his smile. "Unless I'm painting a still life of something other than the ocean, and then I use the appropriate colors."

"Would you like another glass?" I asked as I noticed him setting his empty goblet aside, ready to rise and fetch the bottle. I may not have had many opportunities to play hostess and serve things myself, but I did have a bit of deportment training for it. "Are there any other birds you'd like to hear about?"

“No, I’m fine, thank you,” I said, indicating my glass. “You could tell me about those birds though.” I motioned to a cage nearby filled with rather small, but brightly feathered occupants.

"Those are parakeets," I told him. "They're foreign, from Bhodistan. A diplomat brought me a breeding pair of those, as well as the finches, and they seem to have done well in the conditions. Parakeets are smart as well- they can imitate whistles and speech when they're inclined."

“Really? How marvelous,” I said, looking back at the birds. “It’s incredible the variety of abilities birds can have.”

"Birds who eat fruits, seeds and insects tend to have more vocal ability, I find- perhaps it's a way to defend themselves," I replied thoughtfully. "Like a warning system, or a way to scare off creatures which may consider them prey."

I looked back at the little birds. “I can see how that could be,” I said with a nod before looking back at Lessandrie.
“Thank you so much for sharing all this with me.”

I knew a tasteful withdrawal when I heard one, and I smiled as I rose as gracefully as I could and set my own glass aside. "It was a pleasure, and thank you for listening so intently when I know I wasn't making much sense at times," I told him good-naturedly. "You're ready to return to your work, I take it? Let me send for that painting."

Smiling gratefully I rose and went to the door, opening it and beckoning one of the servants to bring the painting I'd given him, as well as his earlier notebook, to the door and simply set it there; we'd be down shortly anyway. "If you ever feel like seeing the birds again, please feel free to stop by," I reminded him after I'd walked back to where he stood. "It's not often I find people who have an interest in them these days."

“And you are more than welcome to come and visit me whenever you should choose.”

"Thank you- I may have to relatively soon, for I'm always searching out new art to hang here and there," I told him with a smile. "And from what I've seen I enjoy your style a great deal."
With a nod I gestured toward the door, then walked over and opened it. "Please, let me show you downstairs; I've arranged to have your painting and sketches waiting at the door."

“Thank you,” I said with a smile as I followed her. “And I will let you know as soon as I’ve finished the painting from my Mid-Winter sketch so you can see it first.”
