"Alright," I acceded with a shy smile. "I only worry if I'm going to bore you, for I have the feeling you're too nice to tell me if I am." Feeling silly at saying such a thing I glanced at my hands as I took off my gloves and returned the bag of meat bits to its resting place.

“You’re not boring me in the least,” I assured her. “But how about I promise to tell you if you are and that way you don’t need to worry?”

"I agree to your conditions," I replied, already feeling a knot of tension loosen from me and turning back to him as I gestured toward the gardens. "This way, please, and we will see the water-birds very shortly."

“Is it hard to keep the water birds here or are they in a sort of enclosure too?” I asked as I followed her.

"Their wings are clipped along the flight feathers- not enough to hurt them, but they can't fly very far for now," I admitted with a bit of shame, for I'd hated having it done. "But they'll grow back in time for winter, when they can migrate somewhere warmer, and by then they'll think of my garden as home."

“Is that the normal way to train them to associate a place as home?” I asked curiously, no judging in my voice even though I’d noticed the change in her voice.

"usually," I told him. "Birds are mostly creatures of habit and ease; if they stay anywhere long enough and are fed regularly without being harmed they'll continue to return to it. It's why most falcons come home after a flight, even though they are essentially free. Until that point they have to be restrained, though I hate doing it."

“Birds in captivity such as you have here live longer though, don’t they?” I asked. I thought I recalled hearing that somewhere.

"They do, and I know that they don't think as people do, regretting the past as they don't have a real clear memory of it- but I can't help putting myself in their place," I said with an abashed shrug as I led him toward the garden.

"Or a childish, silly soul," I replied with a small smile. "Birds aren't people, after all, and it's hypocritical to act in such a way when I still manage to eat squab or duck with little remorse."

“But these are birds you’ve cared for and helped raise,” I said. “Birds may not be people, but neither are any of the animals people keep as pets or near pets. There’s an emotional bond that forms that breeds deeper caring for the feelings of those animals.”

A thoughtful expression moved over my features as I considered his words, then looked back and smiled a bit wider. "You are very wise, Lord Kachine," I told him sincerely. "And much better with words than myself, as well as being right."

Smiling, I couldn’t help but chuckle softly at her words. “Thank you,” I said, sincerely flattered at her words. “I am rather sure my family would argue with my level of wisdom, but they need not know.”

"I think families, at times, know far less about a person than one would suppose," I suggested delicately as the gardens came into view and I looked over the expanse, hoping to see the long necks of the cranes and egrets over the flower beds. "More than anyone a parent or sibling can be blinded by the past."

"I only try to think things through- though perhaps that's what wisdom is, in itself," I replied, then smiled to see the graceful figures on the western pool. "Here," I indicated, taking a side path and smiling. "I see the herons wading."

Following her gaze, my breath catching slightly. As beautiful as the birds of prey had been, the herons were exquisite. The sheer form of them struck me and I cursed inwardly for not having accepted her offer of fresh paper. Perhaps she would let me come back and paint them formally.
“Oh, they are magnificent,” I said softly.

"They seen quite noble," I agreed as I drifted closer on soft feel to keep from startling them too terribly and sat on a nearby bench, beckoning him over with a smile, for the view was clearer from this angle.

Following her beckoning, I moved to sit beside her on the bench. For a few moments I was just quiet, taking in every aspect I could of the scene and the birds, trying to memorize them so I could put them on paper as soon as I got home.
“Lessandrie, they are just incredible,” I near whispered. “Thank you so much.”

His gaze was so intent I could almost see his hand twitch- it didn't take long to understand how he was thinking, and I beckoned over a servant, whispering a soft request into their ear and watching them bustle off. "You're quite welcome," I replied with a wide smile of pleasure, glad to see he enjoyed seeing them so much.
In a few minutes the servant was back and I smiled and murmured my thanks, slipping a notebook of paper and Darien's pencils, along with a few other charcoals, onto the bench between us to just barely brush his hand slightly and gain his attention without startling him.

My study was broken by the touch of something against my hand and I looked over. A smile, pleased and grateful, spread across my lips as I eager took up a pencil and the notebook.
Flipping to the first page, I quickly began sketching the birds.

Smiling in return and feeling more comfortable in his presence I watched the pencil move over the page and the drawing appear, silent and peaceful with appreciating the skill he used to put the scene back together.

I finished the first sketch and moved on to another. “How old are they?” I asked softly. “Are they make or female?”

"The one on the left is female- the two on the right are male," I replied in a matching tone. "It's hard to tell, but you just barely can by the fact the females are a bit duller in coloring and a little smaller."

Smiling to see him so engrossed I silently watched again, then almost shyly picked up a sheet of my own and one of the other pencils I'd had brought and started on a few faint lines. Eisheth, it wasn't going to turn out well in all likelihood, I realized that, but it was something to do with my hands.

I finished the second sketch and glanced at what she was doing. I smiled to see her drawing as well. I could tell by the look on her face she was concentrating deeply, then I looked at what she was drawing. I noticed something and wondered slightly if she’d take offense. Hoping she wouldn’t, I asked, “May I show you something?”

For a moment I was almost startled and looked up; once I have half a second to gain bearings on my surroundings again I smiled and cocked my head sideways in curiosity. "Of course," I replied, offering him the pencil.

Gently, I took the pencil and then her hand, placing it a little higher on the pencil and at a bit of a different angle.
“If you hold it like this, it will work better for the soft angles and the feathers,” I explained, smiling.
