Smiling again to know there was something else i could show him should the paintings prove a disappointment I nodded, then opened the gate slightly and began leading him up the drive toward my house.

“You are very kind,” I told her as we walked up the drive.

"I try my best," I teased softly. "Which would you like to see first, the paintings or the birds?"

“The paintings,” I said without having to think about it. “I would hate for anything to happen that kept me from seeing them, I really am eager.”

"Alright," I said, the drive stretching on before us for a good distance yet, the gardens and fields surrounding it coming into bloom. "Have you ever seen the ocean?"

“No, I haven’t,” I answered. “Not in person that is. I’ve seen paintings and such, but never had the experience myself.”

"It's different in person," I confessed. "There's the scent, and the breeze of it as well. It engages all of the senses at once- which is why, I suppose, that even after I paint it I still miss it."

“I’ve heard tell it makes one feel small, that it runs on endlessly,” I said, thinking of how I’d heard it described.

"It can, but it makes me feel like flying, trying to get as high as I can to see as much as possible." It was a silly, childish wish, I knew that, but I wasn't concerned with that point- Darien seemed the sort who was genuinely interested, and like he would understand.

I nodded as I thought, completely understanding the urge to see as much of something as possible.
“Is that what drew you to keeping birds?”

With a flush I nodded. "It seems almost silly- it's not as though I can become a bird, or see through their eyes, but I hope that some of their ways will rub off on me, if only I can be kind enough to the ones I keep."

“I don’t think it’s silly at all,” I told her, smiling. “It seems a rather logical and kind way to try and achieve what you don’t have. It’s not as if you are harming the birds, I would assume, so treating them kindly may indeed bring you a blessing.”

Flushing a bit I nodded in understanding- the house was growing closer and I smiled to see it. Even if it were mine to look at every day, I was still fond of its architecture and gardens. "What do you dream for your art?" I asked curiously but softly, not wanting to pry.

“Just that I am able to keep doing it,” I said with a chuckle. “My art really is a bit of a luxury since it’s not my primary position in life, that is my work as a marquist. I am fortunate that there are other who appreciate my art and that allows me to continue doing it whenever I have the time.”

"If you had the funds would you give up being a marquist completely?" I asked, puzzled for a moment. "Isn't that another sort of art, or is it just not your preferred medium?"

“There was a time when I would have given up marquing, but that passed a long time ago,” I said, nodding. “I would miss it and long for it as much as I do any of my other art.”

The door was before us and I reached out, opening it softly and leading him inside. "It seems as though it would be a hard job to do, with a moving canvas and the possible pain I've heard of," I replied. "It's difficult enough at times with a stationary, unfeeling space to work on."

“It can be difficult with some adepts, for everyone’s tolerances are different, but I find it a wonderful challenge. With canvas or paper, once you find a reputable seller, the blank piece is usually nearly the same each time. With marquing, each canvas is unique and must be tailored to accordingly.”

I thought deeply for a moment as the door closed behind us, then nodded in understanding. "That would increase the challenge, I'm sure," I replied softly and with a smile. "It shows what a good artist you must be, to embrace such differences even when they would cause difficulty."

“It’s mostly a credit to my mentor,” I admitted with a smile. “He was so patient and encouraging while I was learning the trade. Had he been otherwise I might not have come to love what I do as much as I do.”

"Good teachers are important to any subject," I agreed, turning us toward stairs leading up to the solarium, where I painted from time to time and had my pieces arranged. "You tend to forget the most the classes with the poor teachers."

All of my less than enjoyable classes came to mind and I smiled. I followed her lead as we began to climb a set of stairs.
“My good teachers have certainly had a greater impact on the person I became.”

"I was lucky and can't think of a class I didn't enjoy," I said with a smile. "But then, I have heard that I was always the bookish sort, and I was very serious about learning everything that was presented to me."

"I've been drawn to so many things- no wonder I don't have the skill of a truly focused and talented person," I said with a shyer smile as we came to the door of the solarium and I opened it.
Inside were my works, oceans, horses and a few various birds, done in the stark, familiar colors I'd seen them in. Every now and then I'd managed a vase of flowers. Though the colors were completely accurate, I knew the lines were not- they held a wavering sort of watercolor edge, like things remembered and seen through frosted glass.

Stepping away from her with a smile, I slowly drew closer to the paintings. My eyes wandered over them all before settling on one and beginning to inspect it more closely. Her techniques may not be perfect, but there was obvious emotion and enjoyment in the process.
“How long have you been painting?” I asked as I studied one of her ocean scapes.

"I'm not exactly sure," I said, furrowing my brows as I thought. "A few years, no more than four or five, though I painted more animals and birds when I lived in Marsilikos."

Tilting my head, I leaned in and examine her brush strokes closer.
“And you’ve never had any dedicated training?”
