Intently I watched what he was doing and smiled, a faint flush coming to my cheeks with pleasure at learning something new and his kindness in showing it to me. "Thank you," I replied, feeling the pencil in my hand and watching as it made a different sort of line than I had been. "And you could use this for shadows?" Turning my face to his I waited curiously for his answer.

“Exactly,” I said with a smile. “Anything where you want a softer, more diffused line.”

Nodding in understanding I shifted my hand down a bit and tried to mimic the line he'd made to add a shadow of the heron at its feet, then looked to him again to see if he approved. I wanted to do his effort in teaching me proud.

“Very good,” I said, smiling still and nodding my approval. “It may take a little while until that position feels comfortable in your hand, but one it does you should be able to switch back and forth with ease.”

"I will try my best to remember," I assured him confidently, then set the pencil aside and looked over what I'd made with a small laugh. "Your picture is lovely, especially in comparison to my own, I do admit."

“Thank you,” I said, smiling. “But I think your picture is lovely as well. Anything done with true effort and love is beautiful.”

"You are very kind to say so," I replied softly. "Though I hope hard work can help me channel what my mind sees more effectively in time."

“Hard work and practice can do no harm in any situation, in my opinion,” I said with a smile.
I looked back at the birds and then at her again. “Thank you so much for showing them to me.”

"You're very welcome," I told him honestly. "Are you done here, or would you like to see more of the herons? This is the only type I have, I'm afraid, but I'm sure there's other angles you could see them from if you wished."

“I’m done,” I said, collecting the various items I had spread around. “I may trouble you in the future for permission to come and paint them properly though.”

"You may come and do so any time you wish- I'll see that my staff is aware," I assured him as I held my own paper, tucked the pencil behind my ear and gracefully rose. "Would you like to see the songbirds now, and perhaps have something to drink?"

“You are very kind,” I said to her offer of allowing me to sketch the birds whenever I desired. “And something to drink sounds very nice in fact.”

"Very well," I replied, rising slowly so as not to startle the herons. "Will wine suffice, or would you rather something else?" Patiently I waited for him to rise and held out my hands helpfully to hold the items he'd gathered as he did so.

“Wine is fine, unless you’d prefer something else,” I said, smiling as I indicated wordlessly that I had everything, but my appreciation for her offer to help carry things.

"I like wine," I admitted, then raised a brow with a smile to wordlessly ask if he was indeed ready to continue inside as I slowly lowered my hands.

Smiling shyly I began to walk toward the house, waiting for him to follow and then matching step so I wouldn't rush ahead or drag behind impolitely. "What sort of wines are your favorite?" I asked curiously, wondering if we did indeed have so much in common.

“It varies a bit depending on the time and my mood, but I tend towards lighter wines, usually whites or blushes, nothing too intense or overwhelming to the palate,” I answered as we walked.

"I quite agree," I told him with a smile. "I have a very nice Eisandine white in the house you may enjoy in that case. The aftertaste is almost like lavender."

Smiling shyly I opened the door once we reached the house and waited for him to go inside before I stepped in after him and softly closed it again as a servant came up and I politely requested the bottle in question and two glasses, to be brought to us in the aviary. "This way, please," I said softly and walked toward the stairs again.

Across from my art solarium was another sunny, comfortable room- it was here I kept my indoor bird cages. Some were on stands and contained only one or two smaller birds; along two opposite walls were larger cages with finches and more exotic parakeets, brought by another diplomat as two breeding pairs who had flourished. The sound was a bit deafening at first, if one wasn't used to it, but truly the sounds were cheerful chirps and squawks and I smiled to see everything in order. "Forgive the noise, my lord," I said apologetically as I turned to him. "It's one of the side-effects of songbirds, I fear."

“Oh no, it’s wonderful,” I said truthfully. “They just so marvelously cheerful.”
Grinning, I set my supplies down and began to wander around, looking at the birds.

Smiling wider and flushing with a bit of glee that he didn't seem to be offended at all I ran my fingers over the wires of a lovebird's cage, chirping to them softly under my breath and then turning to take the glasses and bottle with a smile from the servant-girl once she came in. On a nearby table I set them down and poured the wine into the goblets, then as gracefully as I could carried them over and offered one to him.

"Thank you," I said modestly, then took a sip of my own wine. "This wine, along with a richer red with anise undertones, are my favorites. The red, though, I only have with particularly decadent desserts, otherwise it oppresses everything else."

“I can see how that would require a particular accompaniment,” I said with a nod, smiling as I moved to another cage. “This is an Eisandine white, you said, right?”

"That's correct," I said with a smile, taking another sip. "Unless, of course, you mean the birds- those are waxwings." My tone was slightly teasing and pleasant, and I hoped he'd read the note of playfulness without offense.

A surprised laugh escaped me, startling the birds I was near. I struggled to control my chuckling.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb your birds,” I said with a smile. “And yes, I did mean the wine.”
