For a moment I simply stood still, then turned around and smiled brightly as I walked closer so he wouldn't have to attempt another whispered shout. "Thank you," I told him sincerely, wondering how I was so lucky as to keep making such kind friends when all I did was stumble over myself in social situations. "If you want for paper, I have more inside and I'll send for it."

“Actually, I think I’d rather just listen and look right now,” I told her, smiling.

"If you'd like you can come into the aerie- the birds are all in cages and you can pick the one you'd like to see next," I offered shyly.

“I would like that very much,” I told her. “Should I wait until you have him back in his cage?”

"No, he won't mantle now that he's had a bit of a treat, and he'll stay on his best behavior in hopes of more," I assured him with confidence.

“Ah, he is very like a male person then,” I said, chuckling softly.
With care so as not to startle the bird, I rose and approached them.

Flushing more brightly as I remembered close to the same thing I nodded and laughed as well, and though it was a bit more shy it was still filled with as much mirth. "Surely there are male creatures that is not true of," I offered in a soft tone.

"If there wasn't exceptions there'd be no hope for the world," I teased gently, a soft laugh leaving my throat as I opened the curtain to the aerie to allow Darien inside. It felt good to have reason to be cheerful.

I stepped inside but only out of her way so that she could lead once she was inside as well. “Well, there’s always hope, so I will give in on the existence of exceptions somewhere,” I replied, smiling.

Nodding and smiling wider I led him further down the row of cages and put Rafael carefully back into his cage, then handed him a final tidbit and closed the door before gesturing shyly at the rest of the pens. "Hope is important, as is the existence of exceptions," I agreed with a laugh. "Do you see any others you'd like me to bring out?

“You don’t have to disturb any of them just for me,” I said softly as I looked about. “If I’m slow and careful would it be alright for me to walk about and look at them through the cages?”

"Of course," I replied immediately, slipping off the glove for a moment, for the leather was quite hot, though I didn't put it down in case he changed his mind. "And truly, if you want to see any closer, just let me know. They like to show off a bit, so long as they're not in a poor mood."

"Probably my peregrine," I said, gesturing toward a sulky male in a corner cage. "He's molting his flight feathers and is cranky, so I didn't bring him out today. I've had him about six years, so he's likely getting on in his life."

“Then I shall give him his privacy,” I said, not approaching the cage but instead looking at the other birds. “You certainly have a lovely array of birds.”

"Thank you- I have a few more in Marsilikos, but not all of them could make the trip," I explained, saddened a bit I couldn't show him the peregrine he'd seemed so interested in. Unfortunately it was one of the few birds I had only one of, as they were very hard to catch. "After the Kestrel, Rafael and the peregrine there's really only a couple more falcons- the rest are 'birds of the wrist', which aren't flown from the wing the way falcons are."

"I like them all," I admitted with a shy smile. "To pick a favorite would be as trying to pick a favorite of my paintings, I think. When we go in to fetch yours I'll show you some of my songbirds as well- when I'm indoors they are my companions as much as my falcons and accipitors are out of doors."

“Did you grow up around birds or did you develop the attraction to them later?” I asked curiously.

"Being on the ocean there were always some birds, and my mother appreciated songbirds, so I suppose I grew up with them near," I explained. "For falcons, though, Mother wasn't terribly interested and only kept them for the sake of appearances at the occasional hunts she'd attend."

I noticed that she only spoke of her mother then and not her father. I wasn’t going to pry, but I did find it notable.
“They are very lovely,” I said with a smile. “Thank you for showing them to me Lessandrie.”

"Thank you," I replied with a shy smile and nod. "I try to keep them as best I can- my father likes animals a good deal, but never held with caging them and I suppose that carried over to me as well."

"Thank you again, for I think that's the compliment I'd most like to hear but never manage to," I told him with a small flush at my admission, then whistled low to my Amur falcon, probably the most expensive bird in the aviary since it had come from far East to be here. "And probably the most sincere I've heard anyone be in a very long time."

I smiled at her words, pleased that I had given her such a compliment, even though I had meant it only as truth.
“May I see your songbirds now?” I asked.

"Of course," I said, realizing I'd probably been rambling on again. Eisheth, but I needed to get out more, if only to keep from being a complete recluse. "Though I was going to take you through the gardens to see the herons first, if you'd rather." My tone was easy, and neither option bothered me a bit.

Smiling my thanks I nodded and ducked out the curtain, waiting for him on the other side. "Would you like any more paper, or to have your notebook taken somewhere safe?" I asked concernedly, not wanting him to lose a chance he'd been looking forward to, nor for his lovely drawings to be damaged by the wind.

I grabbed my notebook as I stepped through the curtain behind her.
“No thank you,” I told her with a smile. “I think they will be safe and I’m more in the mood to look and listen to you talk about the birds right now if that’s alright.”
