The retort I held on my tongue died the same instant that the thunder clapped. My head turned instantly to look at the incoming darkness, and I took Damiens hand and got to my feet quickly. "We should probably start heading back," I said, giving him a rueful look. Suddenly my grin was back, and I glanced from him to the sky. "Think we can outrace it?"

I chuckled and nodded, glad for her spirit. "I think we can, come on." I quickly packed up the foods I had brought and ran to my horse stuffing it away in the sack before turning to Mirielle to make sure she was read to ride.

I followed suit, packing away what I'd brought into the small wicker basket that was strapped behind my sidesaddle. Taking up the reins of my mare, I looked at Damien and shot him a smile before mounting. "I'll follow you out, then we'll see who wins," I teased, glancing over his head and at the clouds that were growing.

I gave her a wry smile and jumped up quickly onto my saddle. Before my feet were in the stirrups I kicked my horse forward and she shot out like a bolt of lightening. My arms flung forward giving her as much head as she needed to press forward and her stride lengthened considerable as she sped forward.

I laughed as he took off like a bat out of a cave. Clucking sharply at my mare, I nudged her with my heel and hung on as she took off, cheating by holding her mane while she darted and dodged between trees, having no want or will to fall off from sitting sidesaddle. By the time we broke into the clear meadow, I was laughing again, seeking to chase him down and win.
It was good to have blood family again.
