"Just watching some of the artists," I replied, growing more nervous and flushed by the minute as I stepped closer to where he was looking, willing myself to see what he saw.

“These are good,” I said, reaching out to carefully touch the painting, testing the quality of the paints and canvas she was using. “Your use of colors is quite good in fact.”

"It's only what the colors really are," I protested softly, cheeks just as red as before with the praise though I couldn't help a small smile. "I'm not very good at inventing, I suppose."

“But you’re not trying to invent, you’re trying to capture the reality of something from what I understand,” I told her.

"Yes," I replied honestly. "That is true, but isn't it the act of creation and invention that makes it art, and therefore suitable to be shared?"

“It is indeed,” I said, nodding and shifting to look at another painting. “There are some artists who prefer to create things that are only loosely based on reality though, instead preferring to inject more of their own views on objects.”

"I understand that," I replied, still slightly puzzled as I tried to catch his meaning- which one did he think I did? "But which category would my work fall in, in such a case?

“Oh, you’re a realist, without doubt,” I said, looking at her and smiling. “Even having never seen the ocean, I am certain this is what it looks like.”
I moved over to one of the paintings of a falcon. “And here, anyone who had ever seen a falcon even in passing would know what this was.”

"Does that mean I lack imagination?" I asked curiously, a bit concerned about his answer but stifling it. Really, I wasn't trying to trap him, or cause an argument- there were just times that I didn't know.

“Not in the least,” I assured her. “Or at least I hope not since realism is what I strive for in my own work. That’s part of why I find people so fascinating. They are so different each moment and trying to capture that one moment accurately is a huge challenge.”

Shyly I smiled again, pushing my hair behind my ears from where it had fallen forward. "Your work is very good, so I know that can't be true at all."

“Thank you,” I said, looking back at her work. I walked around slowly, examining each piece. “How long does it take you usually to finish one?”

I was almost tempted to follow him anxiously, but I managed to remain still and simply watch. "A few hours, I suppose- time sort of loses meaning when I get wrapped up in it."

“Ah yes, that I understand very well,” I replied as I finished looking at the last of the paintings and turned to face her. “Thank you very much for sharing these with me.”

"I'm glad you liked them," I said with a nod and a soft smile. "It renews my faith in my abilities, to know I'm not completely mad by doing such things."

“Not at all. Besides, as long as you enjoy it then it’s not mad at all,” I said with a grin.

"It's just a pleasant indulgence from time to time," I demurred with a shy smile. "But I enjoy it a great deal, it's true, though at times it can make me more homesick rather than less."
It occurred to me I could be boring my guest and I brightened. "Shall we go down and see the birds? The falcons shouldn't be caged yet from their exercise."

“That would be wonderful,” I answered, glancing around at her paintings and supplies one last time before we left.

For a moment I thought, then smiled shyly again and walked to one of the smaller pieces, the ocean on a sunny day with water like turquoise, and took it carefully from it's stand. "Since you've been so kind as to help appraise my works for me, I should offer some sort of payment," I said sincerely, then held out the small canvas. "Perhaps when you see the ocean you can better see the similarities between it and the real thing."

My grin became a wide smile of pure, honest delight. “Thank you so very much,” I told her, carefully taking the canvas. “I will treasure this, truly. You really don’t owe me a thing, but I am not going to refuse this even one bit.”

Flushing a bit to see him happy with such a thing and glad he accepted it graciously I smiled widely. "You can leave it here while we see the birds, if you like- so it doesn't get too exposed to the weather." I'd set my new book on a side table, and would come back to gather and read it later.

“Excellent idea,” I said, admiring the piece on more time before setting it on the table. “May I leave my supplies here as well?”

"Of course," I assured him easily. "Unless, of course, you'd like to sketch some of the birds as you see them."

I stopped in the midst of laying down my pad and charcoals. “I didn’t want to impose or interfere with them, but if it’s alright I’d love to sketch at least one.”

"I can handle them a bit, and I think there's a few that like the attention, as it brings a few special treats," I said. "If you don't mind we'll stop at the falcon's aerie first so I can get a glove and look at those ones first."

“Lead the way,” I said, keeping hold of my pad and charcoals. I was eager to see her birds. “I trust you completely as how best to proceed.”

Nodding, I made my way back to the door sedately, then looked back at him before leading him out and once again toward the stairs. "Would you like something to drink while you observe?"

I understood that very well- I often worked so diligently that I didn't realize thirst until I was parched. "If you decide you'd like anything, please let me know," I told him politely but with sincerity as we made our way again downstairs and toward a side door that led to the aerie. "Do you know anything about falcons in general?"

“Just the very, very basics,” I replied. “Nothing much more than being able to recognize them.”
