"You guessed right. My assistant," I rolled my eyes at the thought, "is requiring my presence at the clinic urgently, though she did not tell him why."
Turning to Alean, who had been unusually quiet, I picked up her extended hand and kissed it chastely as I bowed to her a little. "Until the pleasure of seeing you in a week, Alean no Gentian."
"Caine," I said as I extended my hand in an offered handshake.

I listened quietly as my two companions spoke on their childhood. It was like watching someone dance around a fire. They wanted to feel the warmth but did not want to get burned. They seemed inclined to mention brief details without going into painful memories. I could sense a desire and longing flowing from the two of them.
I kept my gaze focused on my hands in my lap. I had had a happy childhood, as far as parental relations were concerned. I loved both of my parents dearly, and they must have obviously loved me to have put up with my curse.
Siegfried's errand boy brought my attention back to the tavern. Siegfried was right, we had been here for quiet a while. I accepted his kiss on my hand and had to fight a deep blush. "It has been a pleasure meeting you. I greatly look forward to seeing you in a week."
I turned toward Caine, "Well my dear, I believe I should be off as well. My aunt will be expecting me soon." I leaned over and gave him the kiss of parting. "It has been lovely meeting you as well."
I stood and left an ample sum on the bar to pay for my drinks. I motioned for my escort in the corner. We made our way out of the tavern and into the bright street.

I returned Aelan's kiss and managed to hold back a blush. I also shook Siegfried's hand, glad to have meet a new friend.
"I look forward to our next meeting."

I unconciously put a hand over Dine's, even though she did not seem that overly unhappy about everything.
"I know someone else will come along. You want to make sure you find the one that's just right."
Just then the host brought along our plates and put my steaming chicken plate in front of me. I had been warned that if I don't be careful my eating could harm my thin body, but so far I hadn't seen proof of it. I figured an occasional treat would do me good. With a big grin on my face I cut into the chicken, "this smells wonderful I told Dine."

I firmly shook Caine's hand. "See you in a week then."
Nodding politely to the two adepts neigbooring our table, I made my way out of the inn, and back to the Practice.

I indifferently returned the giant's nod when he left his table. Apparently, their meet was coming to an end.
Continuing the conversation, I mused : "One thing is for sure, it was an interesting encounter, and it taught me something about the Shahrizai : they are people too. Strange people with strange tastes, but nevertheless creatures of pleasure."
The smell of Aaliyah's plate was rather enticing and my eyes twinkled in pleasure at hers. "Well enjoy it, then." I cut a piece of ham, and spreading liberally some coarse mustard on the bread, took a bite of it.

I followed Siegfried out, though I went my own way once out the door. I had been a interesting meeting and a fun time.

I nodded as I chewed my food. Then when I was able to speak again I said, "That is true, though I guess one forgets at times and makes assumptions. Was it an assignation or did you meet him somewhere," I asked, realizing that I had not even asked the nature of their meeting.

"Palace Fete" I replied between two bites. I took a sip of wine and kept my glass in my hand, playing with it a bit "He asked me to dance, and before I knew it, we were in bed. Quite a charming lad, he was, really. How about you, you didn't meet anyone?"

I nodded my head, "I didn't meet anyone. I actually had a couple of painting commissions and did that all night. Though it might have been nice to meet somoene I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy myself."

"I can imagine." I tasted my soup, and while it wasn't fantastic it was good, in a comforting way. I smiled. "You and your bug to paint. Did you paint anyone interesting?"

"I painted a few people, though some of them for free since I wanted the practice. I always keep those paintings for my own though. The good ones find their way to my bedroom wall." I thought for a moment, "interesting people, I painted a man from Kusheth who was actually pretty attractive. I also painted a Cassaline who posed for the occasion with his two daggers. "

"It's only fair that you keep a free painting, although you should consider once in a while giving it away if the model is wealthy enough for future commissions," I thought aloud, not really lecturing Aaliyah but more trying to help. With mirth in my voice, I asked "How did the Cassiline pose?"

I nodded, "you are right, I hadn't thought of that. Just seemed like I shouldn't give one person a free piece when another was paying for a contract."
I took another bite than said, "the cassaline stood in a meditative stance, but one in which they hold their knives." I couldn't think of a good way to explain it to Dine, so I got out of my seat and showed her. I held my knife and fork as daggers, one hand was up near my face and the other lower by my waist. My feet where kept close together but one was just a inch or two in front of the other. It was a odd looking stance in some ways, but at an angel it did make a nice painting.

I couldn't help but laugh at Aaliyah's impersonnation of the Cassiline. The stance was quite sculptural, I thought, but the sight of my shy, adorable friend in it, with cutlery in lieu of daggers was an odd one if any.
"You are a number, Aaliyah !" I exclaimed, toasting her with my wine. "Must be a nice piece," I noted. "Was it a free or a paying one?"

I smiled at Dine's laughter, I guess I did look a bit silly. Even if I was a male, I would make a horrible Cassiline.
I returned to my seat and drank some wine to her toast with a gleam of laughter in my eyes. I then answered, "his was a commission. I painted three without pay, though I dare say the last one didn't come out to well. I find that I don't paint well after 6 cups of joie."

I chuckled, "Neither do I, so you shouldn't feel bad about that," I replied, knowing Aaliyah would take the bait. I had only tried my hand at painting once, and anybody who had seen the canvas had made me swear to forever give up the brush. I was that bad, joie or not.

I gave Dine a coy look, "you have painted? How often do you paint?" I was a bit surprised, but curious.

I chuckled. "I think calling that painting is an insult to all painters. Really, by Naamah's nails, I swear it. I only tried my hand once, and I've been sworn never to do it again by both ma patron and Valeraine. I still have the canvas somewhere, though I should probably have burnt it."

I smiled at Dine and said, "don't burn it, even if its not going to end up in the archives as a great work, its still yours. Maybe the next time you get the urge to paint I'll give you some lessons." I gave Dine a wink, making as if I was the greatest artist in all Terre d'Ange

I winked back, my lips almost on the rim of my glass "Maybe you will, then," more serious maybe the Aaliyah thought me to be. Her work was lovely, and sensible. I admired it.
A thought occurred to me, and I cocked my head to the side in askance. "Tell me, when's the last time you've had an assignation?"

I thought for a moment, the fact that I had to think was probably not good. I was mmore sought after for my painting skills though.
I shrugged, though I cared more than I wanted to put on, "I think its been almost 3 weeks."

"I guess Eglantine is also suffering from the rise of Valerian and Mandrake house," I replied in all honesty. "Business has been slow at Heliotrope House too. Until last night, it had been a month since my last assignation."
Shifting my tone, I smiled wickedly, "Was your patron nice at least?"

I nodded, "at least Eglantine can still profit from its clothers and other artistic skills. Though I dare say the clothers do get most of the fun. Luckily there are not a large number of painters who do portraits."
I leaned in toward Dine a little and said, "not only was my last patron nice, but he was nice looking. He was an assignation with a portrait commision, which are always my favorites."

"Well, I pretty much always paint them before anything happens, then once the painting is complete and they are satisfied with it, I satisfy them in another way. There have only been a couple of times that it worked the other way around, but it was someone who wanted the look of sexual satisfaction in the painting. I do have to say, painting beforehand is much easier."

"Really? I would have thought otherwise, what with the eagerness and desire. I can barely imagine any of my patrons sitting still for hours before they had their treat." As I said this, I chuckled. Aramis had almost penetrated me immediately the night before. Obviously, he would not have had the patience.

"I do help them by normally painting my clothes on," I told her, "though I dare say that painting can be difficult if they are nude and I must fight my own desires. At least the House does a good job of teaching self control."
I knew the cannon's of all the houses, including Heliotrope, so I asked, "do you ever find that you have a patron you'd rather be with over any other?"

“Of course,” I replied. “Last year, an Aragonian man drove me to the brink of leaving the House”, I declared, nostalgia still in my voice from the memories of him. “He was a little older then I would have accepted, in his mid-forties perhaps. He was not as handsome as our younger patrons, but his body was still strong, and his face was fair. He cared about me deeply, and,” I blushed at the thought, “he was a master in the bedchamber.”
I stopped a moment, in thought.
“What sealed the deal, though, was his intelligence. He had traveled everywhere, he had know Kings and Cruarchs, and he spoke of it in the most generous way, telling me all of it as though I were his equal.”

I could imagine Dine getting along with someone like the man she described. "I hope that you are able to find yourself another bright and warm man to be with," I told her honestly wishing for such. "Though I dare say you'd be better suited for someone a little younger."
I smiled in thought for a moment than said, "I can't say I've found anyone that has made me want to leave the house. Though I have liked some patrons more than others."
