I hoped that we had begun at a friendship, though there was no true way of knowing. I moved back a bit so the waiter could set the pie down.

The waiter put down the pie, and I looked at her, expecting her to start eating.

I picked up my fork and took a piece of the pie, putting the piece in my mouth and chewed. "Delicious."

I smiled. "I'm glad," I said. "I'm partial to peach pie myself."

"Really?" I took a small bite of the pie.

"Yes," I said. "I like how it evokes warm days."

"I'm sure it does." I never had peach, so I wouldn't know.

Good gods, I know she said she wanted to be friends, but she was so ungodly dull I didn't think it would happen. "What other kinds of dessert do you like?" I asked.

I had to think for a minute or two to bring up all the desserts I liked. "Pumpkin pie is top most," I finally said. "Mother always seemed to have one made every week in the fall. After that... Cherry pie and strawberry custard."

"Oh, I love pumpkin pie, pumpkin anything, really," I said.

I sat the fork down. "I could have my Mother send you some pumpkin items if you wished." I've been meaning to send for some anyway.

"Does your family grow pumpkins?" I asked.

"The largest in the area," I said, a bit prideful of the fact. "We even hallow some of the gourds out and sell them for fall decorations." I remembered hearing something of the Alban tradition of how the dead would return to the land of the living.

"How marvelous," I said. "It must be quite lucrative."

I nodded. "It is. I've even suggested that I bring some into the City and attempt to sell to those living here." I had yet gotten word on that considering I sent that particular letter not that long ago. "I hope my mother likes the idea."

"And why not?" I asked. "More business is good business."

I nodded. "I could use some help on that." No, I didn't mean having Benedict help. It was up to him. "I'm sure Uncle could help with some of that."

I nodded. "There is a guild for that sort of thing as well," I said.

"I promise to look into the guild at a later date." I took a sip of my wine. I had a feeling that this date was done.

I set down enough coin to pay for the meal and stood up. "May I escort you to your carriage, my lady?" I asked.

"Of course." I stood and smiled.

I offered my arm, and when she took it, I escorted her out. The carriage was waiting near the restaurant. "Good night," I wished her, "and good luck with everything."
