"I should as well. I might mention it to Uncle for a possible dinner location for a date with Ana."

"Ana, that's the Duchesse Shahrizai, your uncle's fiancee, correct?" I asked.

I nodded. "She is. I know I shouldn't call her by that since I don't know her all that well."

I didn't much care about that. "It's all right...what happens if they have a babe?" I asked.

I shrugged. "The babe will be my Uncle's heir, obviously. But until they reached their majority, I'd be the heir. Or so I'm to believe. I think it might just be a security thing to make sure the title and position's passed down."

"So you're second in line to the unborn babe," I clarified. "Does your position displease you?"

I nodded to answer the first comment. "I will be." I shrugged to the second. "As for right now, I'm pleased with it. Though only Elua knows what the future holds for me and my family if and when Ana and Uncle expect their first babe."

Was she ever placid. Elua knows I've always wanted to be Duc, if someone took that from me I'd be angry. "You seem content to take things as they come," I observed.

"I know that if anything ever happens to Uncle before he and Ana have a child, the Duchy will pass to me. And I'd like to see anyone try and take it from me." I was sure that Benedict could hear the slight anger in my voice. I sure did. "But as for now, I'm content."

Finally, an emotion. Unfortunately, that emotion was anger, and I quickly backed off the subject. "I'm sure you'll be an excellent duchesse," I said.

"Thank you, Benedict. And I apologize for my anger. I...I don't get angry that often." There hadn't been much to make me angry.

"It's all right," I said, "I admit, I was pressing a delicate matter. I'm just curious to see what makes you tick."

"And what of yourself? You're heir to Camlach's sovereign duchy."

"My father was duped out of his rightful seat, when he got it it was a correction of past wrongs," I said. "I have always wanted to be Duc, always known I ought to be.

"Sounds like someone's gone through the trouble to place trouble or blame on your father. I hope that doesn't happen to my Uncle. Elua knows what will happen if it does."

"It's not like that," I said. "The usurper passed away and the title went, rightfully, to our family."

"Ah. See, that's what I get for assuming something." I smiled.

I smiled too, but in truth, I was getting bored. I missed Faolan, and thought I should just write to her. "Would you like dessert?" I asked.

I nodded, setting my fork down, having lost my appetite for my main course anyway. "Yes." Considering this to be a blind date, it could have been worse. Though we still had dessert and farewells to get through.

Waving the waiter down, I said to him, "The lady would like dessert, please."

I sipped at my wine, doing my best to appear like I wanted nothing more to do with my dinner.

The waiter stood there patiently as Alora sipped her wine. "What would you like?" I prompted her.

"Do you have blueberry pie?" I asked, looking to the waiter.

"Yes madam," he said. "One slice of blueberry pie, with two forks?"
"No thank you," I said. "I am full." He bowed and hurried away.

"Am I holding you?" For some reason, it seemed like he wanted to be elsewhere.

"No," I said hastily. "This is my only plan for the evening." It was true, but in truth I could not find her compelling enough to feel even a flicker of desire.

He declined rather quickly to make me believe otherwise. I had to work to make sure my face didn't go into a doubting look. I mentally sighed, somehow knowing that Benedict was most likely taken with another. "Mayhap we can meet up again. What do you say about that?"

"Perhaps," I said. "If you wish, you may write to me and let me know when you are available."

"I'll make sure that I do. With some of the awkward steps we had, I do believe we mayhap have the beginnings of a friendship."

I wasn't so sure about that, but only time would tell. Mayhap under her hard exterior was a real personality. "I look forward to it," I said, as the pie arrived.
