Post Midwinter, Year 1 of Queen Sabrina's reign
I had received several letters upon my arrival in the City for my presence for a private outing on the town. Which meant they wanted a date. It was fine with me, though I had to be careful on whom I chose to finally say 'yes' to for marriage since they might be the future duc and leader of my men at arms.

Mother, ever the matchmaker, convinced me to send a letter to Alora d'Aiglemort upon her arrival to the city. She accepted an invitation to dinner, and so, dressed in my finest, I took my carriage to Cher Fantasie.

I had arrived early, at my Uncle's insistence. Now I sat at the table, waiting for my date, a one Benedict Liatris, to show. I never really met him or his family even though I probably should have since both our families are of Camelach origin. If I remembered right, he was the heir to the duchy of our home province. I leaned back in my chair, mother would have yelled at my bad posture, my arms crossed and legs crossed at the knee, a foot tapping the air.

I entered the restaurant, scanning it for women who were sitting alone. There were a few, and I waved over the maitre'd. "Excuse me," I said, "I'm supposed to meet a Lady Alora d'Aiglemort here, has she arrived?" The maitre'd nodded and pointed to a bored looking red-head, who despite her posture was strikingly beautiful. I walked over to her. "My lady?"

I looked up to a noble man standing there. I straighten my sitting posture before I stood. "May I ask who you are?" I never met Benedict, so how was I suppose to know if this man was him or not?

Who was I? Who else would I be? "Benedict Liatris," I said, taking her hand to kiss it. "A pleasure to meet you, my lady d'Aiglemort."

I allowed him to kiss my hand. "Thank you, Lord Liatris."

I let go of her hand before taking the seat across from her. "How do you find the city, my lady?" I asked.

I followed suit, sitting down. "Lovely. I was out a few days ago with my Uncle. Dinner and shopping for my room in the place he owns in the City."

"That sounds very nice," I said. "Your uncle sounds like a generous man."

"He is. Though it'll take him some time to grow accustom to my presence."

"From what I understand, your uncle is due to be married," I said. "It sounds like a ripe time for change."

"He is. I have yet to meet the woman that would become my aunt and future ducess of Cmalach," I acknowledged.

"At court, they speak highly of the match, in case you were concerned," I said.

"I have no doubt that the match wasn't bad." I was half surprised that Benedict hadn't brought up the reason for my visit. I sure wasn't going to bring it up.

The maitre'd came over to offer us drinks. "What are you having?" I asked.

"A red wine will be nice," I ordered.

"I'll have the same," I told him, and the maitre'd bowed away. I turned back to her. "My mother told me you were looking to meet young men in the city," I said to her, "though I confess she told me naught of your motives."

I had to laugh at that. "That's because I have no motives. Yes, I'm looking to meet young men in the city. But I'm not one to politic all that much. Yes, I know it comes with the territory of being my Uncle's future heir, but I have no motives." So it came out that I'm Uncle Jareth's heir. "I would like to know what makes her think I have motives."

I laughed. "That's because she is the one with motives," I said. "Her dream is to see her handsome son and heir to the duchy marry splendidly well. It's not malicious of her, it's just the way things are."

"Wouldn't any parent, or other parent figure, like to see their children marry well?" I asked. "I know it's true for my own mother that I marry well even if I eventually don't inherit from Uncle."

I nodded. "That's true," I said, "but given that I'm going to be running the duchy someday, my mother thinks I need a wife who was bred for that role."

"Does she believe the future possible heir to my Uncle's title as duc will fill that role?" I wasn't entirely bred for the title or role.

"Your name and blood tell her what she thinks she needs to know," I said. "I prefer to know more than just that."

"That's very good to hear for you. I hope that I grow to know you as well, despite your mother's hand in this."

"I certainly hope the same," I said, as the waiter returned with our wine. I raised my glass. "To new acquaintances," I toasted.

I raised my glass. "To new acquaintances," I repeated. I took a drink of the wine, it having that first drink bite. I was used to that, but it still gets me to a point.

I took a sip and swallowed. The waiter cleared his throat. "For today's menu we have a prix fixe of either the rack of lamb or roast guinea fowl," he said, "it comes with your choice of soup or salad and a dessert. The soups are potato leek and butternut squash, and the dessert is either a chocolate torte or a berry pie."
I looked to Alora. "What are you having?" I asked.

I thought for a moment. "Roast guinea fowl, butternut squash, and berry pie," I said, listing off my choices.

I nodded. "I'll have everything she's not having," I replied.
"Very good, my lord," said the waiter, before bowing away.
