I signaled our waitress for two more ales and then focused on Fydor again. “Love?” I asked. “Who is he sick for?”

"She is princess of Aragonia. Mercedes," I replied, carefully trying to get the proper pronunciation of her name. "They are courting now, and I think my brother does not talk about anything other."

“My, you and your brothers are certainly aiming high in your choice in women,” I said, chuckling.

"We aim for women that we will be liking, and my father will be liking. If Father is happy, life is better," I said.

“Ah,” I said in understanding. “Yes, marriages that make our parents happy are important, aren’t they?”

I chuckled. "Oh yes," I agreed. "Tell me, do you think about it?"

"Marriage or pleasing my parents?" I asked.

I grinned at the waitress, openly admiring her breasts again before taking a sip of the fresh ale.
“I like to please my parents, if for no other reason than when they are pleased they are more indulgent. Marriage is something I try not to think about at all,” I said, chuckling.

I chuckled as well. "I can understand I think. Love changes things here. It is not like Ruskovia, where duty is more important." I raised my glass to him. "A toast to love?"

I raised my glass. “To love,” I said. “For others, and let it be years before it finds me.”

“I will marry eventually, but I am too young to be thinking of such things yet,” I said, smiling and then taking a sip of my ale.

"Jasmine," I replied. As much as I had absolutely enjoyed myself, every time I thought of Lessa when thinking of Isra, it sent fingers of guilt to twist at my gut. "Please, do not tell anyone. I do not want Lessa to know. I... I needed it, but it will hurt her."

"It is different in Ruskovia," I tried to explain. "You are not being intimate with a lady before marriage. It is... it is respect. I tell her this, and she says that she understands. But... her understanding is not whole I think, because she is D'Angeline, and it is very different."

“Would you be hurt if she went to the Night Court to see to her needs?” I asked curiously.

I closed my eyes for a moment. "Yes," I replied, looking at him again. "I know that Ruskovia culture is not fair. I know that there is... two standards. But... I am trying for respect."

I nodded for a second and tried to find the right way to say this without angering him. “But respect also means respect for her culture too, right?” I asked carefully. “She’s d’Angeline, she has desires same as you. By not letting her fulfill those desires, with you or with another, it must make her very upset.”

"She is not seeming upset," I replied, suddenly worried that I was doing this all wrong. I was trying to be true to my values, but what was it costing Lessa?

“Well, if she’s like most proper ladies I know, she hides it well,” I said. “Perhaps this is something you should discuss with her? There are certainly ways to compromise between the two cultures.”

I was suspicious as to what 'ways' there would be to compromise. The only ones I could think of involved Lessa in the arms of someone else, or the two of us doing a lot more than kissing. And if that line was crossed, I wasn't sure where we would stop.
"Maybe you are right. I will think, and talk to her," I replied, brow still furrowed.

"If I did not like her, then I would not court her," I replied, my brows unfurrowing. In this, nothing was confusing.
