The days had become like a blur of things I never understood, woman and girls. Who understood them? I certainly didn't. Sophine, Lillianne, Avianna, Raegan. They all confused me for one reason or another and the only place that seemed to hold refuge for me was the Temple of Kushiel. There I hoped to find some answers, there is where I hoped to feel at home once more.
I took my borrowed mount to the Temple and left him with an attendant as I slowly entered into the Temple. Taking my time as I looked around at all the finery, thinking about the similarities and differences from the one in Kusheth.

I was bored. I wasn't sure where Sarielle was, but we hadn't seen much of each other since I'd arrived in the City. I went out to the stables and saddled Chretienne, deciding to take him for a ride. For the most part I was meandering, but at long last I arrived at the Kushiel's Sanctuary. I hadn't been much of a visitor to the one back home, but for whatever reason I was drawn here. Not surprising, I suppose.
I left my horse and went up the steps that led into the Sanctuary and began looking around. I wasn't really one to pray, and I had a fleeting notion of making penance, but the thought made my skin crawl. I noticed a young man who appeared to be about my age doing much the same as I and I wandered over to him, smiling.
"Hello stranger, what brings you to my Lord Kushiel?"

I startled slight, turning to look at the girl who spoke to me. I hadn't been overly involved in anything other then staring, but she startled me never the less. "Your lord?" I asked raised a brow and smiled a little wickedly at her almost condescending comment. "You Shahrizai think the world of yourself don't you?"

I grinned at him, chuckling softly. I liked being who I was, easily recognized though it made me. "We do, don't we?" I replied, tossing my hair back over my shoulder. "I suppose it is a side effect of being so amazingly good-looking." I was teasing, as the sparkle of laughter in my eyes could attest to.

I chuckled at her response. "Good looking?" I echoed with a raised brow, my eyes going over her leaning over a little as I examined her face, my face scrunching up as I looked at her. My hands crossed behind my back and I leaned back, before taking a step to the side and began to walk around her. I continued to appraise her, walking around her slowly before I came around to her front once more. "Hmm," I shrugged, unclasping my hands from behind my back to cross in front of my chest. I let a small smile curl at the corner of my lips. "I've seen better, and certainly better looking Shahrizai."

I laughed as he made a show of appraising me, and apparently finding me lacking. I stuck out my lower lip in a mock pout. "Now you have wounded my pride, you heartless brute." I grinned at him, crossing my arms over my breasts. "And here I came to seek solace, and instead I shall be leaving in tears."

I dropped my arms to the side, my thumbs tucking into the waist band of my breeches. "Ah well, forgive me madamoiselle. I guess I got carried away, perhaps I should make it up to you." I replied with a chuckled and a smile.

"You can make it up to me by giving me your name. After all, you know who I am." I smiled, then added, "Well, partially, at any rate. I am indeed Shahrizai. Naia, to be precise."

I smiled and bowed an elaborate court bow to her. "Naia," I echoed as I straightened. "Maric du Verais."

"Well met, Maric du Verais. And you hail from Kusheth?" His name sounded familiar. My father had drilled into me the import of knowing Who People Were in our home province, and while I wasn't the best student, I did have a decent memory.

I chuckled and nodded, my thumbs going back into the waist band of my breeches. "The north east coast." I replied. "You?"

"Further inland." I said with a laugh. "But you could throw a rock and hit a Shahrizai in Kusheth." I considered my time in the City thus far and added. "And it seems that is true here as well. Have you found it so, or is it just another conceit on my part?" I said lightly.

I chuckled and shook my head. "Not at all, infact I'm here fostering with a Shahrizai." I said with a grin. "Though he's far less conceited then you." I teased with a wink.

I had to laugh at that. "What, a cousin of mine who's less conceited? Now this I have to see! So, whose den do you call home?" I doubted very much that it was Gadleon, and I knew it wasn't Sarielle, so that left several possibilities. I hadn't met any other Sharizai in the City yet, but I did know of many of them.
Maric's admission had piqued my interest in him. If he was fostering with a cousin of mine, did he share similar traits or interests? I knew my intuition had drawn me here for a reason, maybe this was it?

I chuckled softly as I smiled at her. "Azriel Shahrizai and his niece, do you know them?" I asked, curiously, wondering if there was any sort of connection between them. I mean they were Shahrizai, they were cousins in some way. But I had the distinct feeling that Azriel was not a typical Shahrizai, I didn't think he spent time with much of his kin.

I considered for a moment, then shook my head. "No, not so far." I smiled, then added, "My sister has been a bit remiss on introducing me to the rest of our family here in the City." At least I'd managed to find Gadleon on my own, which had been infinitely worthwhile. "How do you like staying with one of my notorious brood?"

I raised my brows in contemplation of what she said, but my thoughts difted away when she asked about Azriel. "He's very interesting. I don't know too many Shahrizai, but he seems nothing like your family. But he's very nice and his niece is my age." I said smiling. "How long have you been in the City?" I asked, going back to what she had said earlier.

Interesting, a Shahrizai who wasn't a viper like the rest of us? Very interesting, indeed. I should have to ask Sarielle about him, if we were in the same room again anytime soon.
To answer his question, I smiled and thought back. "Let's see... I've been here about two weeks. And you, how long have you been in the Capital?"

I smiled, happy that there was some one that had been here less time then me. It made me feel more comfortable about being in a place like the City. "About a month." I said as I thought. "Its quite the place."

"Isn't it, though?" I smiled before continuing, "There are so many things to see here. I fear I shall be here half a year and still not see them all!"

I chuckled and nodded. "Its true, you might be." I said with a teasing grin. "What brings you to the City?" I continued.

"Oh..." I waved a hand as if to say that my own reasons for being here were irrelevant, though I still gave them. "My sister has lived her for years, and when our father passed, she asked me to come see her. I was tired of living in that drafty old estate with only servants for company, so I decided to take her up on her offer." I shrugged, my story was dull to his ears, I was sure. "What about you, what brings you to our fair Capital?"

I smiled as I listened to her until she turned the question on me. What to say, I followed the girl I was in love with? No, I think I'll opt for the story I convinced my father with. "I'm to be Comte one day, my father thought it was a good idea I come to court to see what it was like. Make connections and what not as well." I said some what dismissively with a shrug.

I nodded, it wasn't an unknown tale here in the City. If Sarielle or I had been a son, we might have told a similar tale. "So, we've established that we're both from Kusheth and we've both been here a small period of time. What shall we talk about now?" I smiled, poking fun at the small talk that people make when they barely knew each other. "The weather has been fine, wouldn't you agree?" I said in a teasing tone.

I smiled brightly and then chuckled. "Alright, lets speak of other things." I suggested. "Or perhaps we should make our prayer to Kushiel and find some thing else to entertain us."
|

|

"What could be more entertaining than prayer?" I said dryly. To be honest, I hadn't any intention of praying. I didn't really know why I'd come, but it wasn't prayer. Curiousity, maybe? At any rate, I would go through the motions if I must. "After you, my lord."

I gave her a quizical look. "Did you not come to pray?" I asked curiously.

I furrowed my brow slightly, sighing. "I'm not sure why I came, really. I was restless and for whatever reason I ended up here. I've never been much for praying." I didn't elaborate on the reasons why, they were many and varied but amounted to the fact that I didn't believe any Gods or Angels cared for us mortals one whit. "But don't let me stop you."

I laughed lightly, I liked his response. "It is a good thing for me," I said, taking his arm, "that you are so devout!"
