Once we were on the path into the woods, I asked Fiona, "Do you like to race?"

He wanted to race? I thought it had been established that I wasn't the best on a mount.
"Sometimes, when I have a hope of winning," I teased with a smile.

"I see," I said. I didn't want to seriously compete with her, but I longed to go a little faster, feel the wind blowing around me. In the distance, I knew there was a small stream. "Want to race to the stream?" I asked. "I promise I'll go easy on you."

I chuckled. "I'll try to keep up," I said with a grin, though my pride prickled at the thought.

"All right," I said, grinning. "Are you ready? Three...two...one..."

Keeping a firm grip on the pommel of my saddle, I kicked my mare into action. Even then, I didn't feel in control. I held on for dear life and pointed her nose in the direction of the stream.

I tapped Daisy's flanks with my heels, putting her at a moderate pace. In no time I was neck-in-neck with Fiona, but I tried not to pull ahead too early.

He was soon apace with me, but I wasn't about to urge my mare any faster for fear of my well being. The last thing I wanted was to fall off. It killed me inside, but considering my luck with these beasts, it was for the best.

I tempered myself inwardly; I wanted to pull ahead, but also wanted to make sure that Fiona made it to the stream intact. The stream was coming closer...we were nearly there...

He edged ahead, a little bit more with every passing stride. By the time we had reached the stream, he was a clear winner without leaving me behind in the dust completely. I slowed my mare and tried to ignore how my body felt rattled by the high speeds. "Thank you for not making me lose horrendously," I teased with a smile.

"You're welcome," I teased back. I glowed with the exercise. "It's not nice to humiliate a lady."

I saw the grin on his face, the pleased flush that lit his cheeks. "You really do love to ride, don't you?"

I smiled even more broadly. "By Camael, it's amazing," I said. "It's one of my favorite forms of exercise."

I chuckled at the allusion in his words, but otherwise ignored it for the moment. "I would love to ride as well as you."

"Well then, let's keep on," I said enthusiastically. "The meadow is just a few more miles from here, but until then, it's a lovely path."

I had to smile in the face of his enthusiasm. "Alright then."

I moved so that our horses were parallel. "We can take it easy for a bit," I said. "The scenery is amazing, and this way we can actually talk."

"Do you ride this way often," I said, gazing about at the natural beauty of the countryside.

"Yes," I said. "At least, since we've arrived. This is a good way to get to a bunch of other paths, which are past the meadow."

"One of the grooms showed me this path," I said, "but I rode beyond the meadow looking for places where hooves had beaten down a path, and found a few."

I nodded. "I like to," I said. "I love finding new places, meeting new people, trying new things..." I grinned back.

"It's a good thing we're together for lunch, then," I said. "The cook prepared our sandwiches with a new sauce that I have never tried. She swore up and down that we would love it."

"Well, this day can't end with you disappointed," I said emphatically. "Tell you what, if something disappoints you, you tell me, and I'll do my best to make up for it." This last was half an innuendo, I didn't know if she was interested in me like that, but she was terribly pretty, and I was enjoying our day very much so far.

The grin stayed as he flirted with me. "Such a gentleman. You must have been raised well," I replied lightly.

"My father is a gentleman," I told her. "He has always been my role model. I admire him very much."
We were almost at the edge of the woods. "Look," I pointed. "We're nearly there."

"Wonderful," I said with a smile, trying to peer ahed through the remaining trees. It didn't do much good, but truth be told, my bones still felt rattled and I was more than ready to dismount. "So what else do we have for lunch, besides sandwiches with interesting sauce?"
