"Fresh peaches," I said, as we came through the trees, "and vegetables with dip."

"Mmm, that sounds tasty," I said with a smile.

"A good thing we're here, then, I'm famished," I said. There was a lone large shady tree in the meadow, and I slowed to stop near it. Swinging down from my horse, I moved to help her down.

"Thank you," I said as he helped me down. Dismounting wasn't my most graceful action, so I did appreciate his aid. "This oak has been here for a while," I commented, gazing up at the tree.

"It's one of my new favorite places," I told her. "Sometimes, I ride out here to read, or think, or even nap."

"Alone? I didn't have you pegged as a very solitary person," I commented, leading my mount to one of the lower branches on the oak to tie her off.

"I'm not usually," I told her, tying up my own horse, "but my sister doesn't much like to come out with me, and sometimes I just need a break from all the studying my father insists on."

"So this is your oasis is it? A place to escape?" I asked with a smile. I looked around at the green meadow. "I don't think I would blame you. It truly is beautiful here."

"My oasis," I repeated, opening the picnic basket and spreading the blanket over the grass. "You know, I suppose it is." I smiled. "Where do you like to go to 'get away from it all'?"

"My piano-forte, or the one up at the palace. Whichever happens to be closer," I said with a smile, moving to help him unpack the picnic.

"Ah, the piano-forte," I said with a dose of admiration. "I recall you telling me before that you play. Do you prefer to be alone, or have an audience?" I began to remove items from the basket.

"I don't mind playing for others. It can be quite a joy at times. But I prefer to practice alone, where no one can hear my mistakes," I said with a chuckle.

I nodded. "I'd love to hear you play sometime, if you'll let me," I said, as I began unwrapping packages.

"Of course. I often practice in the afternoon at the palace, but I can more than easily turn that into a little concert for you," I replied with a smile, taking another bundle of our lunch and unwrapping it.

"Oh please, I wouldn't want you to suffer on my account," I said. "I am sure you will be excellent, with or without practice."

"I would like to think so, but there's always room to improve, as my teacher likes to remind me," I said with a laugh, then took a bite.

I laughed. "There's truth in that," I said, taking a bite of my own sandwich.

"I think people are generally good," I said. "Unless a person is immoral or needlessly cruel to others, it is rare that I do not like people. I like some more than others -" I grinned at her "-but all in all, I think most people have something to like about them."

And how will that suit you when you become Duc I wonder?
"I'm always happy to see an optimistic mind," I said with a smile for the irony of my thoughts versus my speech. "Too often we are clouded it seems, pessimistic."

"Sadly, I think it will wear off someday," I said. "Someday, I will need to be more pragmatic. But for now, I would rather think well of people and be disappointed sometimes, then think everyone is terrible all the time."

I smiled back. She had a bit of sauce at the corner of her mouth and it was utterly charming. "You've got a bit of sauce," I said, pointing to the corner of my mouth. "Right here."
