"Wonderful. Maybe we should cook something up for Elliot, what do you think?" I asked with a happy smile.

“Oh, that would be wonderful. Elliot won’t know what to do,” I said, smiling.

I chuckled. "Other than get in the way you mean?" I asked with a teasing grin. "I love my cousin dearly, but perhaps it's best if he comes when it's ready. I've seen him in a kitchen."

“I meant he won’t know what to do with me in the kitchen,” I said, laughing. “But you have to tell me about seeing Elliot in a kitchen.”

"He's... well, he's such a man," I said with a laugh. "Maybe he's improved since the one and only time I watched him venture into one, but he was always standing at the wrong place at the wrong time, leaning against a counter or perching on the stool beside the oven with his legs stretched out."

I laughed deeply, wiping away the tears that rose in my eyes. “Oh Elua, I can picture that so clearly.”

I laughed again. "I gave him a cookie for being brave enough to enter in the first place, and sent him back outside."

The image of a cookie-appeased Elliot wandering out of the kitchen made me laugh all the more and it took me a moment to be able to speak.
“Thank you for that story, Juliette,” I said, smiling and still wiping at my eyes. “I don’t get to hear a lot of stories about Elliot’s past, and that is one I will never forget.”

"What's family for if not for relating embarrassing stories?" I asked, eyes sparkling with mirth and another bout of laughter not far away.

“I can’t think of a better reason at the moment,” I replied, still chuckling and grinning.

"I know my mother will be the first with stories at my wedding," I said with a laugh, the thought only sending a ping of pain through me before disappearing. "And I'll be beet red."

“Perhaps if you’re nice to me I will make it my duty to keep her occupied so at least the stories only go out to a small audience,” I said, grinning.

I chuckled. "I think we have a deal," I told her. "Would you like to move to the other room? The chairs are more comfortable," I suggested, looking at our empty plates.

“Right now, you can count on me always choosing comfort over anything else,” I said, chuckling and rising.

I grinned and rose as well, leading her back into the sitting room and to the two most comfortable chairs in the room. "Here, just as you requested," I said with a chuckle.

Chuckling, I went to my bag and withdrew the two boxes, one long and slim the other square both tied with yellow ribbon. The longer box held a fan that had real flowers pressed onto it and on the edges. The other box held a necklace of jade enameled beads. “I hope you like them,” I said, smiling as I offered her the boxes.

I opened the longer box first, sliding the fan free. "Oh Caraf it's beautiful," I said as I opened it carefully as soon as I saw the brittle flowers. "So delicate, I love it."

“The moment I saw it I could picture you using it,” I said, smiling as I took a seat. “It’s amazingly more sturdy than it looks. I saw several women using them, including one who smacked a too friendly man with one and they all stood up.”

I chuckled. "High praise, I'll be sure to use it then," I replied with a smile, carefully laying it on a side table before undoing the ribbon on the other box. I gasped softly when I saw the contents. "Oh, this is too much," I murmured, the beads pooling decadently in my hand. They were so beautiful.

I laughed and straightened up. "These are both from Amilcar?" I asked, settling back into my chair and gazing and my two gifts.

I thought for a moment. “I don’t know,” I said finally, chuckling. “I guess it would depend on what you were in mind to experience. Alba was much more serene and peaceful, while Aragonia was filled with energy and excitement.”

“I think I could have spent a year shopping there and not seen everything,” I said. “The markets were just incredible. Next time you come out to the estate I’ll show you all the things I bought for there.”
I chuckled. “I’m very fortunate to be married to a man who enjoys spoiling me.”
