I had just spoken to Bonne about preparing everything for lunch and I went upstairs to tell Avive.
Knocking on her door, I said, "Avive, it's Alain. I need to speak to you."

I was sitting at my desk poring over an Akkadian text when I heard the knock at the door. Popping out of my chair, I went to the door and opened it. "Come in," I said. "What's going on?"

I entered her room and smiled.
"Well, I am hoping you are free for lunch," I told her. "I have someone special to me coming over and I was hoping you could join us."

My eyes widened and I smiled. "I would love to join you for lunch."
"Am I meeting your ladyfriend?" I asked.

"You are," I said, smiling. "Her name is Cybane d'Aiglemort and she is looking forward to meeting you too."

I was at my mirror making sure I was presentable when I heard her name. My jaw dropped and I turned to face him. "Cybane d'Aiglemort?" I asked, smiling even more widely. "Daughter of Kayviel, granddaughter of Isidore?" I knew my history well enough to know exactly who she was.

Chuckling, and not at all surprised that Avive had immediately known Cybane's lineage, I nodded.
"Yes, that's her," I answered.

"She has the most fascinating family history!" I exclaimed. Almost as an afterthought, I added, "I'm sure she's a very lovely woman. I can't wait to meet her."

"I'm glad," I said, raising to go over and lightly stroke her hair. "Please do me a favor though and don't bring up her family's history, not yet anyway. I know what it's like to be judged by one's ancestors and it's not the first thing you want to hear from people."

"Oh, no, of course I won't," I said, smoothing my hair into place. "I'm not judgemental. If you love her, she must be good, right?" I grinned.

It was no time at all before I arrived at the Mauvais townhouse. Despite not really being worried, my heart was still beating fast. I suppose I just didn’t want to admit to myself that I actually was nervous. The carriage door was opened and I stepped out, making sure to grab the wine as well. I moved to the front door and knocked soundly. Taking a deep breath to prepare myself, I waited patiently for the door to be opened.

"Thank you," I told Avive.
I heard the knock on the door. I had told the servants not to get it, I wanted to greet Cybane myself.
"She's here," I said to Avive. "Join us whenever you are ready."
With that, I turned and fair leapt down the staircase. Opening the door, I was greeted by the absolute vision that was the woman I loved.
"Cybane," I said, smiling wide. I stepped outside and pulled the door closed behind me. Wrapping her in my arms, I drew her to me and kissed her deeply.

If I had been even the least bit cold, it vanished immediately when Alain kissed me. Every worried thought fled from my mind, and I could think of nothing else but the man who held me. I drew back from him, unable to control the grin that overtook my mouth.
“Good afternoon, Alain.” I said as formally as I could manage, though I was sure my eyes were twinkling with humor. “I brought you the best wine I had in my cellar.” I said, offering him the bottle. “I thought if we were all drunk I wouldn’t have to worry about impressing your cousin.” I said with a laugh.

Taking the bottle of wine, I kept my other arm around her as I guided her inside out of the cold.
"You don't have to worry about anything," I told her, setting the bottle on a side table so I could take her cloak. "Avive is very excited to meet you."
Stepping a little closer to her, I added in a low voice, "Besides, if I get too drunk I may not be able to control myself and I'll have to ravish you in the dining room. You look stunning."

I gave a small giggle, unable to control the heat that rose to my cheeks at his words.
“Thank you.” I said, moving even closer to him before speaking, “Of course getting you drunk may have been my plan all along. I do love to see you lose control.” I stepped back and smiled innocently.

Glancing around to make sure we were still alone in the foyer, I pulled her to me and whispered in her ear, "My love, you don't need to get me drunk, the thought of you alone tears at my control and the sight of you near undoes me completely."
I placed a soft kiss on her neck and stepped back, smiling.

I had been on my way downstairs, but I stopped just in time to see Alain holding a lovely woman in a passionate embrace in the foyer. She was golden, with blonde hair and glowing skin, and petite. Turning my eyes away, I waited a few seconds before continuing down the stairs.
Reaching the bottom, I said, "Good afternoon, cousin," then curtseyed, saying, "good afternoon, my lady." By then they were not in embrace and I silently thanked Elua for sparing me the embarassment of intruding on their moment.

"Cybane d'Aiglemort, this is my cousin Avive de Mauvais," I said by way of introduction, using the same formal tone Cybane had used when I greeted her. I was having trouble keeping a straight face though.

It was hard to adjust from such an intimate moment to a much more formal one so quickly. I cleared my throat and curtseyed to Avive after Alain introduced us.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Avive.” I said, giving a gentle smile. She was a beautiful girl, there was no doubt. And I thought she had the look of someone I could be at ease around.
I could see Alain struggling to maintain his serious manner from the corner of my eye, though I tried to ignore him for fear of bursting out laughing in front of his cousin.

Rising out of my curtsey, I smiled widely at her. "The pleasure is all mine, my lady," I said, still unsure whether or not I could call her by her given name. "Alain speaks quite fondly of you." I grinned at Alain slyly, he had spoken more than fondly of her.

She spoke gracefully, as though she was thinking nothing behind her eyes. I could tell, though; she was hesitant about calling me by my name, as if I would chastise her for it. I turned to Alain after she spoke, raising a brow and grinning widely at his expression.
“I’m sure he’ll change his mind eventually.” I said, looking back to Avive. “Soon you’ll be hearing about what a horrible person I am.” I gave a laugh, “And please, no more ‘my ladys’.”

"Oh no, my lady, I mean, Cybane," I said quickly, grinning at her, "that will never happen, and if it does, I think he will need a stern talking-to."

"The moment I find something horrible about you, Cybane, I shall be have to find a priest to back me up because no one would believe me otherwise," I told her, grinning.
Looking over at Avive, I grinned at her as well. "And as for stern-talking tos, that's my job in this family."
Moving between them, I offered them each an arm. "Come, let us adjourn to the sitting room until lunch is ready."

Taking Alain's arm, I let him lead us into the sitting room. He was so playful that it was hard to take manners seriously, but that's what I loved about him, everything was almost a game such that we could find humor in it.

I was still chuckling as I took Alain’s offered arm, following his lead while we were led to the sitting room.
“I know you’re trying to be as mature as possible, but forgive me for simply not believing it.” I murmured to him, though still loud enough for Avive to hear. “I’m sorry,” I said quickly, grinning, “I shouldn’t tease you so.”

"See, and here I was filled with nothing but praise for you," I answered Cybane, in the same tone. "You're going to ruin the good example I am trying to set for Avive."

"No need to set a good example for me," I said jestingly, "I live here, I know what you're really like."
I settled into a chair and looked to Cybane. "Truly, it is I who needs to set the example for him." I turned my head slightly and winked at Alain. "Isn't that right, cousin?"

"I don't know, cousin," I replied, making a contemplative face. "I think it will be hard for you to set an example for anyone locked in your room."

I was laughing softly to myself as they teased back and forth, turning my grin to Avive.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you two were siblings.” I said, trying to regain my composure and smoothly change the subject. “How are you enjoying the city so far, Avive?”
