"Oh, I love it," I said earnestly. "There's so much to do and see, and so many new people to meet, and when I'm not out and about, there's plenty to do around here." I did not want to unseat Cybane yet, so I refrained from mentioning the library. "When I'm not setting a good example for Alain, or being locked in my room, of course."

"Yes, I've only let her out so she can eat," I said, nodding slightly.
Unable to maintain my straight face, I grinned and chuckled.
"Actually, Avive has been a wonder, she's already made over the library and spent a decades worth of revenue on new clothes."

"My cousin exaggerates," I said with a wave of my hand. "I would never spend his hard-earned money so frivolously. But yes, I did make over the library; when I got here it looked like someone had died in there, but now it is a good place to sit and read and enjoy a glass of brandy or five."

I smiled at her comment, knowing a scion of Shemhazai could never resist something as tempting as a library.
“Nothing like getting lost in a book. And while we’re on the subject of shopping, I think we should ditch your cousin sometime and have a girl’s day out. I’m sure Alain would think it boring to accompany you around the City, but I would love to. Have you been so fortunate as to visit the Night Court yet?” I asked, wondering at why I felt so comfortable talking about this with someone I barely knew. There was something odd in the way I felt around her, as if she was somehow familiar.

"I would like that," I said, smiling widely. "Although I think I should wear out my new wardrobe before buying even more clothes. I suppose there are other things to shop for, though." I liked Cybane already, she felt like the older sister or bosom friend I was not fortunate enough to have in my childhood.
I smiled softly at her mention of the Night Court. "I have been to the Night Court, albeit only once." LaValle's face swam before my eyes and I grinned secretively.

I was extremely pleased that they seemed to be getting on so well, not that I had thought they wouldn't. If possible, I loved Cybane even more for offering to take Avive out. As much as I adored spending time with Avive, she needed a female friend to do things with too.
"Only once," I said, grinning, "but it was the first thing on her list of demands. I am sure her name will be legend there before she returns home to the isolation of Siovale."

"Hopefully I will be married and won't have to go to the Night Court anymore before I return home to the isolation of Siovale," I replied, blushing. "But it is hard to become a legend with a temperament such as mine." I was not inclined to the harsher tastes, which were easier to earn a reputation by.

"Not everyone becomes a legend because of their temperament," I said, grinning. "Look at me, sweet as honey and my name is known far and wide."
I looked at Cybane and winked.
"That's what drew Cybane to me, she wanted to meet the legend."

I snorted sarcastically before I could stop myself, trying not to wince at how unladylike it was. But I turned, smiling, to Alain.
“But he’s right, you know. There’s many a person who’s known for other things than a reputation for Valerian or Mandrake. You might watch her, Alain. Before you know it, men of all forms will be chasing after her.” I said, winking at Avive. “You are coming with us to the Longest Night fete, aren’t you?”

"Which one?" I asked. "Alain didn't yet tell me which he has decided on."

"She's going to be locked in her room," I commented in a casual tone, but grinned. "So it really doesn't matter which one."

I glared at him, but it was hard to appear angry when I felt so merry. "I suppose I will pass the night in solitude," I said sadly, though my face was jovial. "Perhaps I will write in my diary about how sad I am, or read the more tragic works of Thelesis de Mornay for the umpteenth time. It'll be way better than some old fete."

"I agree," I said to Avive, nodding slightly. "I mean I have to go to these things, you are the lucky one. Who would want to go to some spectacular fete at the Palace with all the glamorous people, beautiful decorations and hours of endless dancing when they could be at home reading? You make me jealous."

"Do I?" I asked. "Then perhaps you would like to hand over the key to your room; if I lock you in, you have an excuse not to attend the gorgeous, amazing fete at all. I can go and make your apologies for you, if I absolutely must."

"No no, I'm supposed to be looking out for you," I told her.
Stopping, I tilted my head and looked at Cybane.
"Then again… if you could convince Cybane to be locked in there with me…"

I laughed, shaking my head.
“Absolutely not. I’ll just steal the key to your room, lock you in there all by yourself, and Avive and I can attend the fete without you.” I said, grinning. “Sound like a plan, Avive?” I asked, turning towards her and winking.

"That's it," I said in an mock exasperated tone. I pointed at Avive. "You are definitely being locked in your room now. " I moved my finger and pointed at Cybane. "And you aren't invited to my room anymore, you've lost your privileges."

I laughed, even though I tried to keep a straight face.
“Oh, fine.” I paused, grinning and raising a brow, “Can you still be invited to mine?”

I smiled, shaking my head.
“I wouldn’t mind.” I turned back towards Avive, “But I’m sure we’re boring your cousin now. Avive, what other things arouse such passion in you besides books?”

"I keep a journal," I said thoughtfully. "And I like...helping people. Spending time with people. I was never much of a social being before I came here, but now I can't wait to go to the fete and meet new people. That is, if Alain unlocks my door in time."
I chuckled. "What do you like to do, Cybane?"

I opened my mouth to reply and found no words. I closed my mouth and truly thought about it.
“Honestly, I don’t know.” I laughed, somewhat sadly. “My mother always told me what I should do, so I never really found time to find something I love.” It was a horrible thought, and confessing it aloud was hard and yet I found I was lighthearted. I was alone, away from my mother, and now was the time to find out what I really enjoyed. “I haven’t picked up a sword in a long while, but I did like that. Quite typical of a Camaeline, I suppose.” I smiled. Perhaps it was time to start taking lessons again, hire a teacher somewhere in the City.

I perked up, my eyebrows going up. "You with a sword?" I asked, grinning wickedly. "I rather like that image."
In fact, I liked it a lot, but the details of how much I liked it could wait until Cybane and I were alone.

"Well, that's something!" I exclaimed. "And no reason you can't keep pursuing it. You're young, anyway, there's lots of time to figure out what you love to do." I shot Alain a sly look. "Besides my cousin, anyway." I was a bit shocked at my own lewdness, but then again, I knew Alain had thought of it first, I could tell by his wicked smile.

I laughed at Alain, nudging him playfully with my elbow. I knew the direction of his thoughts, a typical thing of boys. Of course, I couldn’t quite say that now, as the more I was with Alain, the more I saw my own thoughts turning that way. Such is the way of desire. But there was more to it, we found something deeper within each other. Lust and yet love. I smiled to myself at that. Love. Elua, I was in love.
After Avive spoke, I did something I’d been trying not to do the entire time. I burst out laughing; I couldn’t help it. I suppose I should have been blushing with embarrassment, but I didn’t. I thought it might have something to do with how comfortable I felt with her. Finally, I bit my lip to quiet myself, eyes still grinning in Avive’s direction.

I couldn't help it, I laughed too. I liked Cybane so much, and she and Alain were so in love that it was hard not to be merry around them. Not to mention how much I had changed. Old Avive would never have said something like that. I rather liked new outgoing Avive, I hoped she would stay.

"Your father is going to have my hide for corrupting you," I said to Avive, after I had stopped laughing as well.

"Corruption is such a harsh word," I said, frowning as best I could and trying not to smile. "You've only...supplemented my courtier's education." I gave him a wicked grin.

"Yeah, that'll fly," I said, rolling my eyes.
There was a polite tap on the doorframe and Bonne told us lunch was ready.
"Ah, saved by sustenance," I said, grinning. "After you, my ladies."
