I had just delivered a painting to a patron and was wandering a bit aimlessly back through the City. The day was lovely and I had left a note at the salon that I would be out until tomorrow so I felt no need to rush back.
Thoughts of wandering to a tavern for a drink and a bite entered my mind, but then I decided otherwise when I realized where I was. The colors and textures of the clothing district surrounded me and made me smile. I needed some new things so I might as well wander around here.
A stall with brightly colored shirts caught my eye and I made my way over to inspect them.

The day had begged me away from the manuscript that I'd been loaned from a dear friend; the call of the sun was stronger than rereading the parchment yet again. It felt good to be out and about, and I made my way down through the clothiers district without a specific intent in mind, just glad for the opportunity to enjoy the springtime weather. Stalls lay scattered, though one with bright shirts caught my eye; I had just come up to the front of it when a running pair of children scampered behind me. One accidently kicked my heel and sent me off balance, my hand automatically reaching out and catching the arm of the tall man inspecting the clothing.
As soon as I realized what I'd done, and as soon as I was sure I wouldn't fall on my hip, I snatched my hand back, my face blooming into the full color of embarrassment. "I'm so sorry," I said, trying to will away the color in my cheeks.

"No harm done," I said with a smile. "Are you alright?"

"Yes," I responded without hesitation, my hands automatically reaching down to smooth my skirts back into place. Elua, what an awful way to meet someone; the worst of it was that I didn't know how to rectify it off the top of my head. "I promise I'm not normally that clumsy," I said, offering a smile through the blush that was slowly receding from my face.

Now that I knew she was alright, I really looked at her. She was lovely, no doubt. Like a summer sunset swirled in a bowl and poured into the shape of a woman.
"It would never occur to me to think you were," I replied, still smiling.

Elua, but he was tall. I was hard pressed to think of another who stood of a height with him, though he was proportioned very well, filled out in a way I appreciated. "That's comforting," I said in a mildly off-hand way, though my smile took on a warm edge to it. I should say somewhat else, I knew, but what exactly I wasn't sure. A little belated, but I decided to say it never the less. "I'm Azabel," I commented, forgoing my house and title to hopefully keep things relaxed; some reacted as if a stick was suddenly placed in their rear when they knew who I was. Their rear, or mine - sometimes it was hard to tell.

"Well met, Azabel," I said. "I'm Darien."
Reaching over, I took a white linen shirt with blue embroidery around the seams from the stack.
"If you don't mind me asking, what do you think of this shirt?"

Darien. I filed it away in my memory, wondering idly who he was, what he did as a profession. Adepts generally introduced themselves with their House attatched; besides, he didn't have the demureness that adepts generally had. I glanced over as he picked out a shirt and held it, then looked at his torso and over his face. "Truthfully?" I ventured. "The blue is too vibrant for your skin, I think." I took a step closer and leaned, my fingers brushing along a garment much like the one he held, though with a darker blue. "Mayhap something like this more, though in the end whatever you fancy." I smiled at him as I said it, then leaned back once more.

I grinned. "You have a good eye," I said as I exchanged the shirt I was holding for the one she had pointed out. "Now another question, what to wear with this?"

He seemed friendly and outgoing, and I could feel myself loosening up; thankfully my cheeks no longer felt warmer than they should. "Fawn-colored breeches," I said promptly, my smile lifting more. "For the season as well as the simple fact that I think they would look very well on you."

Nodding, I looked at the shirt again. "I have a pair of those at home, which means now I have that much more to spend on another shirt," I said with a smile. I handed the shirt to the merchant for him to wrap up.
"Thank you," I told Azabel.

"You're more than welcome," I said gently, though with an unabashed smile. I moved to a side display that lined one of the walls, looking over a few scarves and ribbons. Selecting two that I particularly liked, I turned slightly, holding them aloft. "Your turn, if you wouldn't mind," I chimed quietly. "Plain," I said, holding up a light violet ribbon, "Or not?" And I held up the other, this one in green, though laced through with an intricate design.

After handing over the money and getting my paper wrapped shirt, I turned to look at her.
"The plain," I said without hesitation. "You don't need the additions."

"Oh," I said, giving Darien a little grin, "Well thank you twice over, then." I glanced past him and to the shopkeep and gave him a nod, indicating I'd purchase it. He made his way to me and I pulled out a centime for the bit of cloth, then tucked it into my purse.

While she was making her purchase, I glanced about trying to decide where to head to next. A stall about halfway down the street caught my attention. It seemed to have the loose, long sleeved shirts I was so fond of while painting.
I glanced back at Azabel, wondering where she was heading next. It wasn't in my nature to impose or question, but she was pleasant company and had a good eye. If she was planning to shop more I would be happy to stroll with her.

I turned from tucking the ribbon into my purse and found Darien glancing towards me. I had no want to be presumptuous that he mayhap be waiting, but small, secret little piece of me hoped so - he seemed lovely, and I wouldn't mind spending more time with him.
"Walking this way?" I asked with a smile, my voice light enough that he would be free to take it for a joke if he didn't have any want to meander with me. Gods, even this was bold for me, but I'd been resolved to be more open and out of the box when leaving the townhome earlier.

I smiled, pleased she had broached the topic first.
"Yes in fact I am," I replied. "I see another stall of interest about halfway down. If you're heading that way too I would be grateful for some more help making decisions."

My smile grew a little more teasing, but I nodded through it, my gaze traveling up to greet his own. "I may have to start charging," I said with a little grin, making my way to the front corner of the stall and waiting for him to join me as we walked.

Chuckling softly, I joined her and we began to walk down the street.
"If you start charging, that means I'll just have to come up with a way to repay you," I said, smiling.

I schooled my grin a little, curtailing it to a smaller version, though still holding a touch of mirth that undoubtedly reflected in my gaze. "That's generally a good way to go about it," I answered as simply as I could, though I glanced up to ensure he knew I was jesting.

"True," I agreed with a chuckle. "But unless you want my opinion as well, I'll have to come up with something of equal value."

"Oh?" I ventured, my smile holding strong. "If that's the case, then I should make sure my opinion is very well received indeed." I picked my skirts up as we crossed a small intersection in the path, absent-mindedly keeping them clear of a small muddy patch. "Is there anything in particular you would propose to repay me with, if the occasion does not arise for your own opinion?"

"Well, should my debt grow large enough I could paint your portrait for free if that interests you," I offered, smiling. As much as this was social banter, I would enjoy having her sit for me. she had an interesting quality about her that would be a challenge to capture.

"Really?" I asked, surprised and intrigued all at the same time. I hadn't pictured him as an artist, but then again, I had little experience with them. "If that's the case, I'm at your service for as long as it takes," I replied, giving him a little grin as I glanced up at him. "Or if that fails, mayhap I'll simply have to seek you out."

Smoothly, I pulled one of my calling cards from an inner pocket and offered it to her.
"In case you need to seek me out."

"Oh," I said, drawing it out some as I accepted the card, making the appropriate sounds of impressment. "Darien Kachine," I murmured as I read it, glancing up as I did to assure myself I wasn't going to stumble into someone again. "And a marquist as well, I see. Most of your clients are from the Night Court I assume... do you get many peers as well?"

"Most of my marquing clients are adepts, but I get a fair share of peers and nobles," I replied with a smile. "The majority of my painting clients are peers and nobles though. In fact I had just dropped off a commission before I started shopping for clothes."

I was impressed in truth, and I looked up to him again curiously, a smile still on my lips. "What do you prefer to do, if you had to choose one over the other? Art upon a canvas, or art upon somebodies skin?"
I looked away out of necessity, assuring myself once again that nothing barred my way that would result in me tripping a second time - that humiliation would be enough to send me home for the remainder of the day, and given that I found Darien rather interesting, I would be mournful of it indeed.

"Canvas," I answered. "or paper. Drawing, painting… they are as much of me as my skin. I can't remember a time when I wasn't drawing in some manner. I love being a marquist, but it's something I was taught to do. I could give up marquing if I was forced to, I would have to die to stop drawing."

I nodded as I listened, my smile fading away as I concentrated on what he was saying. "That's..." I trailed off, thinking. "Two things, really, that come to mind. First is commendable, and the second, understandable. To be true to the love one is born with is commendable on its own, but to partake in it with passion is even more so. Is there anything in particular you enjoy painting, or simply a variety?"
