"People," I told her. "Though anything will do. People are my favorites though. I could sketch or paint one person a thousand times and never have it look the same for each sitting would present me with a different model."
We were nearing the stall I had been eyeing, but a somewhat rough patch of street lay between us and it. I offered Azabel my hand to help her across.
"What about you? Any passions so deep you could never give them up?"

I listened to him, enjoying the pleasant baritone of his voice as he spoke on what he loved. "Have you found anyone you truly enjoy painting, more than any other?" I was curious to that, of whether he did in truth enjoy one woman or man, for their face or inner beauty, personality, or some other feeling he had attatched to them. As he placed a hand out for me to take, I smiled and accepted it without hesitation, my other reaching to absent-mindedly gather my skirts and lift them ever so slightly off the ground.
"Knowledge," I said, my voice a touch breathier than it had been before as my smile grew. "Reading, mainly, but to study and learn, even witness first hand what I can, though that can prove difficult at times. More than aught else, though, it's books, and everything hidden within their pages."

Without seeming to, I studied her as we walked. Though she hadn't given a title with her introduction she was without doubt of noble, or possibly royal birth. There was an ingrained manner in her that came only within the confines of upper society.
"I enjoy painting everyone and anyone, each person is so unique. Though there is something special about painting the oldest and youngest of society," I said, smiling.

My smile softened with the images his words set up in my mind, and I nodded, understanding what he meant. "Wisdom and innocence," I said, thinking on it as we walked. "Or sometimes deviousness," I added, amending what I'd said as I glanced up at him, my smile growing. "I can remember quite a few situations in my childhood that couldn't quite be summed up as innocent."

I chuckled at her words. "You must have outgrown that stage, for you hardly seem the troublemaker now," I replied with a smile.
We'd reached the stall and I turned my gaze to the shirts there.

"The ones that don't seem like troublemakers are the worst kind though," I said with a teasing smile, though not really arguing against what he said. I really wasn't a troublemaker anymore, though I wasn't much when I was younger either. Most of what I'd meant had centered around practical jokes to my brothers, but in the grand scheme I'd done what I could to be the little girl my parents wanted.
Publicly, anyhow.
As we reached the stall I stood a step back from him and watched, my hand giving his a small squeeze of silent thanks before slipping away to allow him use of both his hands. My hand was warm from where it'd pressed against his, and I angled my arms behind my back, letting my fingers tangle behind my rear as I waited.

As I reached out to feel the material of the shirts, nothing heavy would do, I said, "I never did ask what brought you to the clothier's today."

I just wanted to get out of the house," I said conversationally, looking around me as he glanced through a rack of shirts. "Boredom more than anything, really. One strong enough that even reading couldn't cure it." I brought my gaze back and smiled at him. "Is there anything in particular you're shopping for?"

I picked up a loose shirt of undyed linen. "I like to wear these when I paint," I told her. "And since I paint in them, I go through them quickly. I was hoping to find a couple new ones to start ruining. They have to be light though."

My initial response was to ask him why he didn't just paint shirtless, but I curtailed it before it could leave my lips; there likely was a number of reasons, or mayhap one as simple as he didn't like it. Darien didn't seem a fool to me; quite the opposite, in truth.
I nodded and stepped further into the stall, my hand coming out to trail along the shirts as I passed, feeling the weight and softness of the fabric. "Does color matter?" I asked, holding out a vibrant pink one, my smile boardering a teasing grin. "I believe you would look quite good in this color."

A smile spread across my lips as I looked at the shirt she held. "Color doesn't matter at all, but if I take your advice you have to promise to come and sit for me," I replied.

I looked at him in surprise for a fleeting second, though I thankfully recovered quickly, nodding at him with a light smile. "Agreed," I said, playfully bowing my head at him. "But only if you promise to wear this shirt. I'll even purchase it for you." My smile grew a little more, crinkling up the corners of my eyes.

"Well, how could I possible refuse such generosity?" I said, returning her smile. I had caught the look of surprise that had crossed her face like a wisp of cloud over a full moon. The look did not sit well, as if she wasn't often surprised and I was pleased to have done so. "It's a deal."

I laughed in complete delight as he agreed to it; I wasn't quite sure if he would have or not. "Fantastic," I said, flashing him a grin. "Will this one fit, do you think?" I asked, holding it up for his inspection; I'd have brought it up against his chest had I known him better, but I wouldn't overstep my bounds.

I stepped closer, letting the shirt rest against me as I looked down and appraised it. "I think it will," I told her, catching her eyes and smiling. She had an intoxicating laugh. I was torn between trying to catch that laughter on paper and sketching her in her comfortable company of books.

The backs of my fingers brushed against his chest as he moved to let the garment fall against him; he felt warm, strong, much like his personality that I'd been able to discern thus far. "Oh, good," I said, smiling brightly as I brought the shirt away from him again, holding it to my own chest without thinking as I looked up at him. "I think I'll go make my payment on it, then; I wouldn't want to forget."
Humor filled me unendingly as I moved to the keeper and dug a few coins from my purse; once the garment was wrapped and tied, I made my way back to Darien, handing it out to him. "My lord," I said as I did so, a smile crossing my lips.

Taking the package, I bowed gratefully. "Why thank you, my lady. You are very kind," I told her with a smile.
I finished a transaction that left me with two more shirts - both undyed cotton - and added that package to my growing bundle.
"Where to now?" I asked Azabel.

It looked almost awkward having to carry around the bundles that he had, though he was long limbed enough that he didn't look overwhelmed. "Well," I said after a moments thought, "I have an incurable sweet tooth; there's a small fudge and pastry shoppe not too far from here. First, though, is there some place you'd like to go to deposit your packages? It doesn't look like any fun to carry them around with you."

I smiled at her kindness. "Unless we go all the way to my salon, it's better to just carry them," I told her. "I'm fine for at least a trip to the pastry shoppe. Lead the way."

I nodded and stepped out into the sunshine again, angling so we were walking the same direction that we had been going in before. "Let me know if you need help carrying them," I said, flashing him a light-hearted smile. "You're so small, you might well topple over from the weight of your shirts."
He was one of the tallest men I'd ever met in all good honesty, and I didn't doubt he'd catch the jest of my words.

I laughed as we walked towards her preferred sweet shoppe.
"Yes, I know, it's a trial not being able to reach high shelves and needing a boost when I sit at a table," I replied, grinning.

"I'll bet it is," I said with a matching grin, enjoying the light hearted banter we were sharing. The shoppe was upon us within a few more strides and I led the way in, pausing after entering to hold the door open for him as his arms were full.
Once inside, I looked over the pastries offered, hoping to catch sight of an apple turnover. "Would you like anything?" I asked him, glancing up with a smile.

The shoppe smelled divine, no wonder she liked it here.
"I think my mouth might leave me if I didn't at least try something," I said with a smile. "What do you recommend?"

"The apple turnovers," I replied without hesitation, returning his smile. "Even with using winter apples, they are beyond compare, and the crust..." I grinned a little more, shrugging lightly. "Heavenly."
Upon hearing me the clerk behind the counter raised his head and smiled, holding up his finger to silently ask if I wanted one. I motioned to wait a moment; I would wait for Darien before I ordered.

"That sounds delicious, I shall have one as well," I said. I looked at the clerk and held up two fingers, asking if there were two. He nodded and began getting them for us.

I waited until they were ready and gave the man a few coppers, then handed Dariens to him. Ah, gods - it didn't occur to me until my arm was extended towards him that I'd paid for his without asking. Had I angered him? A stricken look hit my face before I could swallow it, followed closely by a blush. "You can buy mine next time," I said in attempt to make up for it, though I couldn't quite tell how he would take the act. Some didn't appreciate having things bought for them as their pride got in the way, and I hoped he wasn't one.

The look on her face was obvious, and it made me smile as she spoke. "I will, though not because of some sense of masculine duty, but because it's fair to trade off," I replied.
I looked at the turnover and then down at my full hands. "I will ask you to hold that for me until we find a place to sit though, I may drop it otherwise."

I smiled with the knowledge that he wasn't angry, and as he looked down to his full hands I followed suit. "Oh," I said, chuckling softly. "You're right; I'm sorry."
I turned and led us through the establishment, holding a side door open for him. Outside of it was a small room with cushioned wicker chairs, seperated by small tables. I held the door open for him; the windows were boarded tastefully still from winters end, though lamps were lit, giving the room a merry glow.

"Thank you," I said as I followed her and set my packages down and then looked around.
Smiling, I pulled out a chair for her to sit.

"Thank you as well," I replied as I sat, angling myself to keep my skirts from folding and bunching under me. The place was empty for now, though experience had taught me tht anyone could show up at any given moment. I waited for Darien to seat himself, then offered him the turnover once again with a smile.
