"Thank you…again," I said as I took the turnover. I studied it for just a moment, inhaling its scent deeply before taking a bite.
I made a happy sound as I chewed and swallowed. "Oh, that's delicious."

I'd taken a bite of my own as he did, and was still chewing when he spoke of how it tasted. I smiled and nodded my agreement, then swallowed a moment later. "I have to limit myself with them, otherwise I'd be here every other day," I said, grinning as I took another bite.

Nodding as I made work of another bite, I savored the wonderful flavors.
"I can understand that," I agreed, smiling. "Now that I know about them, I will be hard pressed not to stop in every day."

I smiled, leaning back comfortably in my chair. "Is your salon near here, or in another part of Mont Nuit?" I asked, trying to spur conversation more, and interested in knowing a little more about him.

"A little of both," I answered, setting the turnover down for a moment so I didn't eat it all at once. "It's three streets up and over half a dozen blocks. Far enough to be considered another part since there's no clothiers over there and yet fairly central to most things in Mont Nuit. You're welcome to come see it whenever you like." I smiled as I added the last.

"Thank you very much for the invitation," I said, smiling in return. "I may have you surprise you one day." I took another bite of the turnover, savoring the apple flavor as it rolled across my tongue. "It sounds like you have a nice location for it. Have you ever studied at Eglantine?"

"Yes, I was fostered there from the ages of 10 to 15. My father is an ex-Eglantine adept and he'd hoped I would follow in his footsteps," I replied before enjoying another bite of the nearly finished turnover.

"Really," I said. "Did he paint as well, or was there something else that he did?" I took another bite; another one, maybe two and my turnover would be gone.

"He's a painter as well," I told her after I'd finished off the pastry. "That's how he met my mother, he was commissioned to paint her portrait."

I nodded, holding the last bite of my pastry in my hand and thinking on it. "It sounds like you had good support in it, then," I said, offering him a smile. I wondered silently as to why he left rather than staying longer, but I decided I'd already probed too far; I wouldn't push more. I ate the last bite and brushed the crumbs from my lap with an absent hand.

"At first, though I know I disappointed him by not becoming an adept and finishing my training there," I replied. "But that wasn't the path for me and I am very happy where I've ended up."

"I'm glad to hear you're happy," I said, giving him a truly pleased smile. "I'm sorry to know that your father was disappointed, but I hope he is able to see how you've flourished and that he's happy for it as well." He must have flourished - his own salon? There could be no other way, whether it by luck or by skill. Darien, to me, didn't seem the type to rely heavily on luck -- I respected that.

"I hope he's happy too, though I can't really control that. All I can do is my best and be a good person, whether that makes him happy is his choice," I said with a serene smile.

I tilted my head, thinking on that particular outlook on life. "That's a good philosophy to have," I responded after a moment, my eyes laying on his, curious. "You're an interesting person, Darien."

"I have a feeling you have no chance of boring people," I told her, smiling. "I certainly haven't been bored, I find you both interesting and engaging."

"Why thank you," I said, smiling widely at him. "That's very kind of you to say - I'm not sure what I would have had to do if you found me boring." I smiled, teasing a little. "I'd have had to put my foot down short of dancing a jig, though."

Laughing at that image, I said, "I promise not to request a jig."

I gave him a little grin, bowing my head graciously to him. "I appreciate that," I said, chuckling with him.

Before I could answer, a group of children tumbled into the room where we were sitting, herded by two harried looking women who had to be their governesses. I smiled as the children clambered into chairs and all began begging for their treats at once.
"Seems our sanctuary has been breeched," I said with a chuckle.

I watched the children with their guardian, all the kids obviously related by the shapes of their faces and mouths. The poor woman was trying to divvy up the food while keeping her hand on the youngest who seemed determined to squirm away and go exploring. I smiled at the sight of it all, then transferred it to Darien. "If it had to be, I'm glad it were by children," I replied happily. A thought occurred to me and I tilted my head, a little curious. "Is your father tall, Darien? You're certainly one of the more taller people I've seen in the City."

Her question - though not the first time I'd been asked - caught me a bit off guard and I chuckled again.
"Both my parents are on the tall side, but neither as tall as I am. My twin sister is more of a normal height as well," I answered. "My mother swears I wasn't exceptionally tall as a child until I could no longer find places low enough to draw on so I just kept growing."

I laughed with the image his words gave me, amused by the idea of it. "Maybe she was right," I said, smiling at him. "Either you found enough places that no one else could reach, or your body must have finally said enough was enough."

"I think I finally hit my head on enough things that my body gave in and stopped growing," I replied, smiling.

"I can believe that," I said, chuckling softly. "Well, I'm sure you've gotten more than one comment on your rather impressive height." Impressive indeed - I rather liked how he looked, and couldn't imagine him being any shorter. "I don't want to keep you, however, if there's aught else that you need to be going to. You're more than welcome to accompany me if you'd like, though; I'm just going to be wandering Mont Nuit."
I smiled warmly as I laid the offer out, my voice friendly and kind, not expecting anything either way.

"My afternoon is free, but before we wander anywhere else I'd like to take these packages back to my salon," I said, smiling still and pleased at the idea of spending more time with her.

"Oh, good point," I said, giving him a grin. "After all, you would need your hands open if I needed to coerce you into carrying my packages for me..." My tone was a blatant tease as I stood up, absent mindedly straightening my skirts and brushing the wrinkles out of them.

In the back of my head I could hear Reese making a comment on packages and carrying them and I grinned to myself, moving out of Dariens way and letting him take the lead to his salon. "I'll follow you," I said pleasantly, smiling up at him.
