I'd managed to slip away again, this time in the early morning before Victoire was awake enough to try and remind me of other things I had to do. Not that she necessarily would, but I liked to make her wonder where I was and I think she liked that I tried to stay out from underfoot. It would have been easy for us to get put into the same mold, looking so similiar and being sisters, but we were really pretty different people at our core. Having different friends and interests didn't keep us from being sisters anyway.
The square was quiet and the air was fresh as I stepped into the most central part of the City proper, at least as far as the shopping districts were concerned. I'd dressed simply, my gown a regular d'Angeline style one in maroon and my fedora perched on my head, and I smiled as I looked across the scene. The shops weren't even open yet, not when the sun was only an hour above the horizon, and somehow that changed the whole atmosphere of the place, like the Palazzo in the morning before people were waking up.
With a smile I stood up on the edge of the fountain in the center of the square and balanced on it to read the plaque that hung near it, my dance training giving me good enough balance that I shouldn't fall unless something starled me or actively pushed me over. I may have already known what it said, at least in terms of history, but reading it with my own eyes was still a good thing. Part of being here, in Terre d'Ange, was about connecting with my roots and learning the homeland I'd been born to, and I intended to do just that.

I started the day early, I couldn't help it. I was back in the city again after being away for more then half the year. Many nights I thought about my return to the city and the things I would do. There were so many things left undone and so many things I had not yet even thought to try. There were no friends here, save for a few, no memories that held true happiness, save for a few. This was a new oportunity for me and an oportunity to start over again. I wanted to make a real go of it this time and not in the way that I had done last time, not in with my head in the clouds.
So I woke early and left Azriel's before they woke and began to walk through the city on my own. There were very few wandering the streets at this time of the day and it was nice. I had time to think about the things I wanted to accomplish and the things I wanted to do for myself. When I reached Elua's square I decided to take a moment and sit by the fountain. That was when I noticed a figure on the edge of the fountain looking at something. Slowly walking over to the girl I smiled a little and wondered who she was. "Hello." I said once I had reached her.

I was just about finished reading the plaque on the statue when a voice behind me caught my attention- and right now I was just glad that he hadn't startled me so much that I fell into the fountain. Turning my head I looked at him and smiled, then turned on the ball of my foot and caught my balance with a smile. Whoever was talking to me was about my age and handsome, and seemed to be generally good-natured though it was a little hard to guess from a first impression alone. Still, he seemed like the kind who would smile more than he'd frown and that was something.
"Hello," I replied in a cheerful voice as I stepped down from the side of the fountain, a hand going to my hat to keep it in place in the light breeze. "I didn't expect to see someone so handsome out so early and I probably looked a little crazy up there, didn't I?" Once I was on the ground I offered the man my hand to kiss or to shake as he saw fit and laughed slightly. "How's your morning going? I'm Noemi." I wasn't the kind of person who let the opportunity to meet someone new go by without acting on it and if that made me seem a little too free- well, maybe I was, and that was their opinion, but I wasn't going to change either.

She was happy and friendly, greeting me immediately with a smile. She was also attractive and I felt a urge to be more proper. But she greeted me with just her first name and her hand outward. Had it been a different circumstance I would have bowed and kissed her hand but considering informality of the moment I let my actions reply in kind. "Not crazy just interesting. And my morning is going very well." I said chuckling softly. "I'm Maric." I added. "What about you? How is your morning going and what were you doing up there?"

There was something quite amiable about how he shook my hand and smiled back, and I was glad I hadn't made he react too badly to my behavior. I knew that a lot of people were suprised with how I seemed to open up so easily, but I hadn't seen any harm in it so far. "Well, I'll definitely take 'interesting' over 'crazy'," I told him with a laugh as I shook his hand in return before letting go. "It's nice to meet you, Maric. I love that name, it sounds so dashing."
Someone calling across the square to attract early customers to buy flowers caught my attention for a moment, but then I glanced back at Maric with a bright smile. "I'm doing very well, thank you. Mostly I was just trying to read the plaque on the statues in the square. My siblings and I recently arrived from Serenissima, where I was living since I was a toddler, and I thought I should get a little more grip on the d'Angeline side of things. Since I'm a little short I had to get higher to get a proper angle on it."
Another breeze came by and my hand went to my hat to push it down over my loose hair a little more firmly. "What's got you out so early? I bet you know the City a little too well to need to read the plaques and dedications on everything."

I chuckled at her comment on my name but was distracted by what she had said. "La Serenissima?" I said smiling. I had never been and it sounded exciting. But her comment about knowing everything about the city made me chuckle. "Actually I'm well... I've been to the city before but only for a short time. This is only my second time here but I only recently arrived here." I shrugged. "I'm not really aquainted to anything in the city." I said with a little chuckle. "What was La Serenissima like?" I asked curiously.

I didn't mind people asking about my home, in fact in some ways it made me feel a little better knowing that others were as curious about where I was from as I was about this land where I was born. "Well, even if you've only been here once before you know more about it than I do. I was in La Serenissima from the time I was three or four until just a few days ago," I explained with a smile. "So it was like home. It's much more crowded there than here, since everything has to fit into a smaller area, and the rivers run through it so the easiest way to travel is usually by boat. Everything has a sense of age to it and the people seem more earthy, if that makes any sense."
My tone probably showed some affection for the land, but I'd spent a lot of time there and it was only natural as far as I was concerned. "I'm probably not the best at explaining it though since I don't know what's here to compare it to. If you're interested you should go, it's a wonderful place and that's the best way to really know what it's about." There wasn't any harm in admitting what I didn't know, so I decided to be honest when the answer to something eluded me. "What part of Terre d'Ange are you from?"

I listened with interest as she spoke of where she had been raised. It sounded magical and beautiful though I supposed that anything other then where one had been raised would sound magical. I tried to imagine what it looked like and how wonderful it was based on what she was saying. It gave me an anxious feeling of wanting to travel yet being fearful of setting out on my own. But I pushed the thoughts away as I focused on what she said and then the question she asked. "It sounds beautiful." I said smiling. "I hail from Kusheth myself. Have you ever been any where other then La Serenissima?"

Kusheth- that was the place on the western border of Azzalle and sharing some coastline with it. Maps I knew readily enough, and even some of the trade goods of different places, even their origins and the Companion who had ruled their area, but I generally tried to get to know people for themselves, not their bloodlines. It seemed like the least I could do if people were going to be patient enough to speak with me and answer the odd questions I sometimes came up with.
"I was born in Azzalle and lived there until I moved to La Serenissima," I told Maric honestly. "And I've come back there a couple of times since to visit with family, but not very often. Otherwise it's all been in Serenissima, but I learned every bit of it I could. Have you ever traveled anywhere?"

"Very interesting." I replied softly as she talked about her up bringing. When she turned the question to me I smiled and shook my head. "No unfortunately. I've only just turned eighteen and my father has been far to focused on his Comty to ever take us any where. I mean I've been through Siovale a little and through L'Agnace obviously but not overly much." I chuckled a little. "Do you plan to do any more traveling; will you be staying in the city for a time?" I asked curiously.

"You've been more places than I have in that case, since I've only been here, Azzalle and Serenissima," I told him cheerfully, shifting my hat a bit as the sun rose a little higher and threatened to shine in my eyes. I liked the light but being blinded wasn't my idea of a very good way to start the day. There were too many other things to see and I didn't want to cut my exploring time any shorter than I had to.
His next question made me stop for a moment and consider, then smile. "I think I'm going to be here for awhile now, unless my sister decides to take a quick trip to Azzalle for some odd reason. I think she likes being here though so that might not happen for months. And there's so much that I have left to see here." It was probably obvious that I was already a little entranced by what I'd seen of this place so far but I didn't mind, as long as Maric didn't find it annoying. "What brought you back after your time away?"

Again I listened as she spoke, taking in all the information that was being given to me. She seemed sweet and kind and I liked her enough to think about asking her to have lunch wit me later. "Well I said that I had been here before right... Well things didn't go very well and I returned home because the city was too much for me." It was probably more honest then I needed to be but he nature told me that she wouldn't mind my candor. "But now I'm back to try again and to join the Queen's army." I shrugged a little when I had finished.

It was interesting to hear from somewho who said the City was too much, or that some event here had driven them back to another place, everyone else seemed to really love it. It could get overwhelming though, especially if you were the kind of person who always needed a reason for things, or some kind of sense. I seemed to do well because I just accepted the insanity and chaos as it came along and made sure to stand my ground within it.
"I hope things go better for you this time than they did last time, and if it helps I can see how it could get to be too much," I said in a sympathetic tone, a gentle smile that reached my eyes settling across my face. At his statement about joining the military it brightened though and I hoped that it would go well for him. He looked like the kind of person who could do anything he set his mind to. "Really, the military? I wish you the best of luck with it! What kind do you want to be, a naval officer or calvary?" I bet he'd look really cute in his uniform whichever branch it was.

I smiled at her words, nodding my thanks wordlessly before she questioned me about what I wanted to do in the military. "Most likely cavalry." I replied with a smile. "My family has a tradition of joining, my father was in the army and his father before him. It just seemed natural and I really enjoy it. Plus it will be good for me when I take over my father's Comty." I added.

The calvary- a very common one for noblemen, and I knew that it carried with it a lot of status and prestige to say you'd been able to join. "It's nice to keep up with traditions like that and I hope everything goes well," I said with a smile, cocking my head and trying to recall the particular calvary uniforms I'd seen before. "And you'll look very dashing I'm sure. Some of my cousins were in the military as well, and I think it's great that you're willing to do something that keeps other people safe."
There were actually starting to be other people in the square besides the two of us and the shops along the edge were opening, a sure sign that it was going to get busy soon. I was enjoying the conversation, but when the volume built up here it could be hard to hear yourself think, much less what anyone else is trying to say. "Do you want to get something to drink?" I asked Maric in a friendly tone. We were having a nice talk and that seemed the easiest way to carry it on without having to shout, as we would no doubt have to in another ten minutes. Besides, he was cute.

I smiled thankfully at her words and chuckled at her comment about me looking dashing in the uniform. "Well thank you." I said with a grin. "And I would love to have a drink with you." I added as I turned sideways and offered my arm to her. "Shall we?"

The smile that crossed his face gave him an even more charming look and I returned it as I lightly took his arm. We still hadn't traded last names yet but he was acting as polite as any well brought up noble I'd ever met and that made him as good as a prince in my eyes. The way people behaved was far more important than what their name told you anyway, especially since some would use it as an excuse to do things worse than they might around strangers.
"Well, it's still early yet, so should we have tea or start with something else?" I asked in a conversational tone as I glanced up at him, my eyes sparkling with humor. It wasn't odd to start with wine in the morning for some people and if that was what Maric was used to it would be an interesting change.

I chuckled softly as she looped her arm around mine and we began to walk, leaving the square behind as we headed closer to where the cafe's were. "We can have what ever you desire." I said with a happy smile. "I'm game for what ever you would like. If you desire getting drunk then I'm happy to accompany you for that too." I laughed teasingly.

His joking drew another laugh from me but I shook my head slightly as I smiled. "It's never as much fun to get drunk during the day, the sun ends up seeming too bright," I teased back playfully, cocking my head and looking back at him. He was cute and I'd almost swear he was flirting with me but it could also just have been friendly jesting. "I'd say tea, as conventional as that is unless you can think of something else along those lines. Do you know of any good shops around here?

I chuckled at her response and smiled as we walked. "Tea sounds perfect." I replied. "And I think there are a few good places around here. Anything you particularly look for in a good cafe?" I then asked.

It was good to hear his laugh- it was low, masculine and resonant, a very lovely sound. "I'm not very picky," I admitted with a small laugh of my own. "As long as there's tea, seats and maybe a table, and no one is banging gongs constantly, that sounds perfect to me." It wasn't as though I'd been completely throughout the places in this part of the City yet so I didn't have any basis of comparison for what was good, so it was a little easier to just accept whatever was around. "A place not completely filled with smoke would be nice too."

I nodded and guided us to one of the closer by cafes and found us a seat outside on the patio. Moving to one side of the table I pulled out the chair for Noemi and waited for her to sit before pushing it in. Once she was settled I moved to the other side of the table and sat down across from her. "Is this acceptable?" I asked with a smile. As I looked across the table I felt a sense if peace. It was nice to spend time with some one where there was no confusion as to where things laid between us. It was simple she was a girl and I a boy but more then anything we were just getting to know eachother with the hope of a friendship for the future.

When he pulled my chair out I sat down politely and thanked him, then waited for him to sit as well while looking around. He'd chosen a spot outside, which was perfectly fine as far as I was concerned; there'd be plenty to see and talk about and the light breeze was very comfortable. Once I was settled I took off my hat and set it on my lap, then used a light brush of my fingers to tuck any stray tendrils back behind my ears.
"Yes, I think this is very nice. You have good taste in scenery," I said to my companion, smiling as I looked back at him. "What do you think, is this up to your standards?" There was a light, friendly tease in the question about his choice in places to sit. I didn't think he'd pick something he didn't like, but it was nice to see how new friends reacted to humor.

I smiled across the table at her. "Oh my tastes are simple. I would have been happy eating out of the garbage heap." I teased with a chuckle. The waitress came over then and handed us a pair of menus, I thanked her then turned my attention back to Noemi. "So what looks good. Are you hungry at all? I was thinking about some little finger sandwiches."

I gave the waitress a smile as I picked up my own menu and looked across it quickly. There wasn't anything I was terribly unfamiliar about for the most part, and I was still laughing a bit from Maric's comment about the trash bin. "Just like a cat, they don't mind very much where they eat either," I said jestingly, then considered the menu again. "I like those little sandwiches, they're always fun. Otherwise it's probably just a good, strong tea for me unless you have any recommendations."

"Dogs are nice too, but then I like all animals," I said playfully, then considered his offer to share. I was an active girl, and while I knew I was a bit more petite than others I didn't have the tiny appetite to match all of the time. If not for all of the exercise and dance training I did I'd probably have far more curves than were seemly. "I don't mind sharing if it means you order one kind of something and I order another and we trade part," I continued in a cheerful tone, my blue-green eyes flashing a bit in mirth. "There's more variety that way. Unless you have something else in mind that I'm completely missing the point on."

Chuckling I nodded a little. "Then I'll get my own plate and you get yours then we'll trade." I offered with a grin as I put my menus down. "And its good to know you like animals, I'm a young man and I often resemble a variety of them." I teased.

My menu still drew me in a bit and I chose my own plate and tea before I set it aside carefully so it wouldn't fall off the edge. "I've often heard that's the case with young men but not being one I couldn't say for certain," I teased back with a light wink, the evidence of my laughter certainly in my voice. It was easy to get along with Maric, he was polite and open, and his sense of humor meshed with mine very well. "What animals would you say you were most like?"
Of course I was probably opening myself up to any number of humorous responses with that question, but it would be fun to see what he said anyway. After all, that was part of joking and flirting, wasn't it? He seemed nice enough that I didn't really have anything to worry about, since he seemed to be of the same mindset I was, but even if I did go too far I'd just apologize and hope he accepted it.

"Oh I would have to say I'm very much like a dog." I replied with a little grin and a laugh. "Loyal to a fault, soft and cuddly. Aggressive when pushed to be or when some one I care about it being bullied." I smiled, less mirth in my eyes and more honesty then anything else. "I'll hump anything that moves." I added teasingly and being completely facetious. I was still a virgin after all.
"What about you, what sort of animal would you describe yourself as?" I asked, turning the question back onto her.
