The end of his descriptive statement made me laugh so hard I'm sure my cheeks flushed a bit in amusement. It wasn't a forced laugh, but something genuine and sincere, and I was glad to be talking to someone that could be as open as I was. "I don't know if I can come up with as good of a justification as you did," I teased in return. "But being an animal lover I will say that was apt. For me- I don't know. I've asked myself that question and always get a different answer. I'm going to say a ship-fish today- they're always smiling and they love to dance. Have you ever seen one?"

I laughed right along with her, pleased that my words had not offended her and she had taken it just as I had meant it; in jest. Smiling I listened to her the shook my head at her question. "No I don't believe I have." I replied.

Smiling widely I listened to his laugh- it was very attractive in its own way- and then thought for a moment. "It's going to sound strange, but ship-fish are animals that live under the water and breathe air through holes in the top of their head. They're friendly to people and will come swimming up in the ocean, making clicking sounds, and they do swim like fish but they don't have any gills at all." Knowing I must sound crazy I shook my head. "I'd have to show you a picture to really explain it."
Knowing that he probably thought I was crazy I gave him another wink and hoped that he wasn't unnerved enough to simply walk off. "But until then you're just going to have to take my word for it. They're fun and like to jump out of the water, almost like they're dancing and doing plies." Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a waitress making her way over and gave her a smile, then glanced at Maric to see if he was ready.

I chuckled. "I believe you." I said smiling at her and her story. She looked to me and I glaced to the side to see the waitress and looked back to Noemi. "I think I'm ready how about you?" I asked as I lifted the menu again so to be sure I knew what I was getting.

"I was born ready," I told him in a teasing tone, then looked at the waitress and handed her my menu as I ordered my tea and tray of small sandwiches. The fact that he believed me was nice, very comfortable in fact, and I was starting to believe that we'd have a friendship that lasted past a single lunch. Some did, some didn't, but Maric seemed to be a very deep kind of man and, as he'd described himself, a loyal one. There weren't much better types of people to befriend. Once the waitress had my order written down I glanced at him and waited for him to get what he liked.

Her reply made me chuckle and it was then that I realized how much I had been laughing since we had met earlier. It was wonderful and refreshing to be around some one I go along with so well without worrying whether or not I was making a fool of myself. I handed the waitress my menu as well and the ordered my own plate of sandwiches and a tea for myself. When the waitress was gone again I turned to look at Noemi again. "So do you have any plans while here in the city? Wealthy husband perhaps?" I teased.

His question was one I'd actually been asked a lot in Serenissima from various friends, whether or not my family was bringing me here to find a husband or suitor that was d'Angeline to keep my family line pure. It was of great concern there, whether families would be changing origins, but my parents had never had those kind of concerns. "I try to avoid making any kinds of plans," I teased back, cocking my head slightly with humor showing through in my smile. "And I'm lucky enough that I don't have to worry about whether or not I'm marrying well. I don't look old enough that it should be a concern, do I?" At that I gave him a jokingly concerned look before continuing. "What about you? Are you in the City to find a wife?"

I shrugged a little. "I suppose so." I said as I thought about it. "I am of age now and one day I will inherit my fathers estate. I'm not sure I am ready to go out and get married right away. But I'm certainly eager to meet some one." I chuckled.

Well, he was honest- and I really hadn't ever met a man who wasn't somehow looking for the love of his life. Some just weren't ready to settle down with that love. It seemed that Maric was the kind who was though. Another sign of loyalty. "I can understand that as well. I'm eager to meet people, but I try not to think about that side of things on the first meeting, and instead to look at everyone as a friend. I guess that's so if I do meet the right person I know that it was love and not something that was forced." Being a Princess meant that one day I might have to marry for my station, but I wasn't going to think about that either and I gave him another smile. "I think you'll have good luck though, Maric- you're smart and handsome, and girls like that."

I chuckled though perhaps a tad bit cynically. "So far I haven't been exactly lucky in love. I've been rejected by three girls so far because I wasn't good enough. I wish I could he as possitive as you but I think it is just not in the cards for me at the moment." I replied with a shrug.
"What about you... I mean I assume you're about the same age as I. Have you had any luck so far in the game of courtship?"

He obviously didn't like the way things had gone with his love life, and I could understand something of the pain in that; who lived without being rejected at some point. "I think those girls were perhaps juding for the wrong reasons or didn't have the time to know you well enough," I ventured sympathetically. "That's usually the cause of such things, at least from what I've seen. No one can love another if the heart and mind are unsuited for it. But if you are my age, then there's always more time. Some noblemen aren't even out of school in Tiberium until they're twenty five or so."
I could only hope that reassured him- after all, I only knew his first name, that he meant to go into the military and that he was about my own age, not what family he belonged to. Some were far more strict than others. "For me- I haven't been truly courted, only in jest and friendship. I think that's part of why my parents wanted me to come back here, so I could learn what it was to be d'Angeline and find my own way in such matters. Serenissima is lovely, but it's not the same as here at all."

I listened to her and nodded in understanding as spoke. There was certainly a push from my father to court some one of good standing. Part of me wondered if that played a role in my choices and as to why I didn't manage to actually follow through with the girls I was courting. "How old are you anyway...if you don't mind me asking of course."

It was in my nature to joke and Maric still seemed to need cheering up so this really seemed like the best time. "Oh, I'm forty-five," I teased, trying to keep my expression serious and failing after a moment or two when I dissolved into another grin and a light laugh. "Really I'm seventeen. How old are you?" About this time the waitress started back over with what looked like the tea and I saw her out of the corner of my eye.

I too laughed at her jest. "Forty six." I replied with an impish grin as I played along with her game. "Or eighteen. I can't remember which." I teased. Just the our food arrived and was settled in front of us before we were once again alone.

"Well, it's so hard to tell between those two ages," I teased as the tea and sandwiches were set down, giving the server a smile and then watching her walk away. "But I'm going to venture that you're eighteen instead, at least for now." I carefully brought the saucer with my cup on it a bit closer so I could stir the tea and cool it slightly before I picked it up and took a sip. "Are you going to be nineteen soon?"

"I've been seventeen for a couple of months," I said, remembering the party that I'd had and the friends and family who were still in Serenissima that had celebrated with me, and I smiled as I took a sip of tea. "Is it any more different going up one year to eighteen than it is turning seventeen?" There was a little bit of a tease there, but that was the fun of being out with friends, wasn't it? "At least you didn't really have to jump to forty-six, that would take away a lot of time for fun with friends."

I smied at her reply and the look on her face that told me her memories of her last natal were pleasant. About then I picked up my tea spoon and scooped a bit of sugar into my cup before pouring the tea into it. "Eighteen is phenomenally better then seventeen." I added with a chuckle as I stirred. "Theres a sense of freedom in it. I don't have to listen to my parents any more." I laughed.

"I don't know that I'm listening that well at seventeen," I said with a laugh, then delicately picked up one of the small sandwiches from the variety on my plate and took a polite bite before chewing and swallowing. "I mean, I don't really break any rules, but I definitely try to get around some of them when I can. They're still in Serenissima though so I guess they're counting on my older sister to keep track of me and she's a lot more relaxed than they are. What are your parents like?"

Her comments made me laugh a little as I could understand what she meant. "My mother is fairly submissive I would say, quiet and allows my father to make the rules." I replied to her question. "My father is a little more strick; family honor, keeping out name pure and strong, you know, all of that. He's not hard nosed, he just prefers a tighter leash." I added with a little shrug as I picked up one of my sandwiches and took a bite. I chewed for a moment as I thought then spoke. "My sister is a lot like you I think. I'd be eager to have her come to the city as you have come with your sister."

"It sounds like your parents are pretty nice overall," I said with a grin. "Mine tend to be a bit more loose with things, though they both were very interested in doing what was right all of the time, and keeping my siblings and I connected to our home country even though we lived somewhere else. My older sister is the more responsible one, at least when you first look at her, but she trusts me to look after myself."
When he mentioned his sister it seemed there was a good bit of closeness there and I cocked my head a bit as I picked up my teacup and took another sip, then swallowed. "If you want your sister to come why not ask her? I'm having a lot of fun here and I'm pretty sure if she's anything like me she would too."

Our turn in conversation to siblings had me thinking about Lillianne my sister. When I had returned home she had been happy to see me and have me back, life without me had been boring to her; her words. When I had left this last time she looked like a dog that had been kicked one too many times. We were both eighteen now and she had every right to come. But I think my father was afraid that I would be so busy with my own things that Lilli would some how get lost in everything and I wouldn't be there to protect her.
"Actually I was just thinking that." I replied to Noemi as I broke myself out of my thoughts. "I know she would enjoy it and she's eighteen as well. There isn't any reason she couldn't." I added with a smile.

"Then all you have to do is ask her, right?" I asked cheerfully, taking another bite of my sandwich and swallowing behind my hand before continuing, as I'd been taught since I was old enough to eat solid food. "There can't be any harm in it, and she'd probably have some fun too. It's easier sometimes when you have relatives around to keep you company, so that even on the days where something bad happens there's someone nearby to talk to about it." That's how things with Victoire and I generally worked out and I smiled a bit wider at the man sitting across from me. "She's the same age as you, does that mean you're twins?"

I nodded as she spoke, chewing a bite of my sandwich and knowing that she spoke the truth about having my sister here. "Yes we're twins." I answered her question with a smile after I had swallowed. "She's a great joy to be around, I think you two would get on very well."

"I hope so, everyone needs to have a few friends before they can really make a place their home," I replied, smiling a bit wider and flushing slightly. I knew that twins were close from the couple sets I'd known in Serenissima as well as the stories I'd heard Christien tell on occasion when he visited so that had to be a good sign. "If she does decide to come I'd love to meet her, if she wants to meet me, of course."

I had to chuckle a little. "I think she'll like you and I'm sure she would be happy to meet any of my friends. She and I were pretty much the only ones back in Kusheth, we spent all our time together so both of us don't have much in the way of friends."

"Well, I have a few other friends and cousins here so maybe I can introduce you both to some of the people I know and then we'll have a sort of posse," I joked teasingly as I edged my plate of small sandwiches toward him with a smile. "And I think we were supposed to be sharing these. Go ahead and try one if you want, they're pretty good." It seemed like Maric was going to be a good friend to have around, and he was cheerful and pleasant and could joke and laugh as much as I could. "What did you and your sister used to do back in Kusheth to pass the time?"

I had just finished my own sandwich and nodded as I chewed, reaching out to take one of hers as I pushed my plate of sandwiches toward her in the same fashion. "Nothing much, mostly just wandered the estate and did our classes with our tutors." I said once I had swallowed my bite. "A lot of times we rode, some times we went hunting with some of the staff. Both she and I like to read as well." I shrugged a little. "What about you, what did you do in La Serenissima?"

Smiling slightly I took one of the sandwiches from his plate and took a small bite while I listened to his answer. It sounded like a quiet childhood, if a fun one. Swallowing, I replied, "There were a lot of tutors- my parents wanted all of us to be as educated as we could be- and lessons of different kinds. When I wasn't doing that I took ballet and played sports or explored the Palazzo and the rest of La Serenissima as much as I could. Sometimes I went riding but not so much hunting, and then as I got older there were more parties and events to attend so I went to those." It may have sounded like I was busy a lot of the time, but that was how I preferred things and I smiled a bit wider. "What do you most want to do now that you're back in the City again?"

I nodded and listened as I sipped my tea then thought on her question. "I am not entirely sure." I replied then thought on it. "Actually it may sound silly but I suppose I would like to fall in love." I chuckled a little feeling self conscious as I did.
