I'd just finished packing the one bird I'd decided to take- my lovely and well-trained female Kestrel- into its traveling cage when I decided to finally sit and wait as patiently as I could for Fydor's arrival. All morning I'd been trying to keep myself busy so I wouldn't worry too terribly with my hair or dress, which I'd decided to keep flattering but simple considering the events for the day. I'd even flown all of my birds that I was able who weren't molting and spent an hour deciding on this particular one above all others.
Smoothing the skirt of my gown, which was a grassy green with cream embroidery, my nearly-shoulder length hair loose around my shoulders as I sedately drank a glass of wine to calm my nerves.

I was nervous, more than I ought to be. But I finally decided that my hair was not going to become any neater, and that there was no more lint on my outfit. I was wearing russet breeches tucked into my favourite pair of brown leather boots. Above was a white linen shirt. I couldn't stand to wear any more clothing, it was so warm. Even now I was itching to undo the top button whenever I wasn't in the shade.
I rode through the streets on my stallion, the only signs of my wealth in the horseflesh beneath me, the signet ring on my right hand, and the sword at my side. I found Lessa's place with little trouble, explaining who I was to a manservant who came out helpfully. I waited, as patiently as I could, standing before her door with reins in on hand.

One of the maids told my Fydor had arrived, and it took every bit of my composure to not rush toward the door; instead, I sedately stood and thanked the girl, then made my way to meet him. Taking a deep breath I opened the door and stepped out, cheeks pink with pleasure and anxiety. "Good afternoon," I said softly, then looked up to meet his gaze.

All I could do was look upon her for a long moment, her beauty even more stunning today than the first time I had seen her. But then I remembered myself and bowed to her lowly. "It is a pleasure to see you again Lessa." My words stumbled a bit, poleaxed as I was by her arrival.

As he bowed I dropped into a matching curtsy, flushing deeply. "And you," I replied in a soft but steady tone as I rose. He looked very handsome and a bit surprised to see me, and I wondered if he'd remembered me as a bit prettier than the present proved. "I hope you have been well." The blush was still on my skin, but I decided to take a chance and quickly brushed the kiss of greeting against his cheek anyway.

She stepped forward and kissed my cheek. My eyes closed at the feeling of her soft lips and her scent that enthralled my mind, and I only just managed to remember to return the favour.
"Better, now that I have seen you," I replied, voice soft from her closeness. "You are beautiful today Lessa."

"Thank you, my lord- you are too kind," I nearly whispered in reply, now pink with pleasure as I reluctantly pulled away. "Would you like to come inside for something to drink, or shall we depart shortly? If you'd like, you can leave your horse here and we can take my carriage."

"I thought you called me Fydor," I said with a smile, wanting to brush my fingers over her pink cheeks but not daring to. "I am ready to go, but if you wish for a drink, how could I say no?"

"Of course, Fydor," I replied, smiling wider in happiness. "I've had a bottle of wine arranged to come with us- I only thought perhaps you'd like something cold after the ride, for it's getting quite warm this time of year."
I greatly wanted to reach up and touch his hair, or brush my fingers over his brow, but stopped myself; he was not d'Angeline, and his ways were different than mine. I wouldn't chance losing what we seemed to have with silly brashness. "I can show you toward the stables if you want to ride with me."

I tied my horse to the hitching post and then offered my arm with another bow. "Lead me where you wish Lessa," I said with a smile. I wasn't quite sure what she wanted, so this seemed the easiest way to find out.

Smiling brightly I took his arm, then looked at his hitched horse and had an idea. "If you bring your horse with you we can put it in one of the empty stalls- surely it'll be more comfortable there," I ventured, hoping he'd like the idea.

I nodded, inwardly kicking myself for not thinking of it first. She really did have me dazzled. "Of course, that is a good idea." I untied my horse, took the reins in one hand, and re-offered my other arm to her.

"Thank you," I said lightly, taking his arm again as I gently began to lead him toward the stables. "Will you tell me what you've done so far today, Fydor? I enjoy hearing your voice."

I followed her lead, trying not to think too hard on how she said she liked my voice. It would only muddle me more. I thought for a moment before replying, wanting to form the right phrases. “I got up this morning and eated… ate breakfast. Olga was eating as well, so I talked to her. Then I looked at Valik here and made sure he was ready for today. Then I had a bath, dressed, and rode here.” My stallion’s ears flicked back at the mention of his name.

"Valik? That's an interesting name," I replied, lightly stroking the stallion's shoulder for a bare second so as not to possibly irritate him. "Your day sounds very much like my own, save I have no sisters to talk to, and I had to check and ready a bird rather than a lovely horse."
It wasn't very far to the stables along the cobbled path and it was soon in sight, the sounds of contented horses in stalls and being exercised in paddocks. "I decided to bring my Kestrel- I've had her for a few years now and she's likely the steadiest of my birds, if not the flashiest."

"That is good. I am... more than impressed now," I said, quite proud of myself that I had gotten the phrase out. "You do not need a flashiest bird." I smiled at her, and then we were at the stables. I led Valik into a stall, keeping him calm with familiar ease.

Flushing a bit in sheer pleasure to have pleased him I ducked my head slightly, peeking up through my lashes to watch his masterful handling of Valik. "I wonder what I have done to impress you, so I could continue to do so," I replied softly. I seemed to be becoming somewhat more capable at the business of flirtatious conversation, or so I thought- though with how abysmally I'd begun anything had to be an improvement. In any case it wasn't true flirtation, for the state implies holding something of yourself back and I simply couldn't do so.

I settled Valik in, and then turned back to her. "It is not one thing only," I told her, looking into her eyes with a smile. "I do not know to say it in words, even in Ruskovian."

At the full focus of his eyes on mine I blushed even picker, though I didn't duck my head or look away to break his gaze- I hesitated to even blink. "Then I will have to hope I am very lucky and keep such regard," I replied, smiling a bit more widely. "I do understand what you mean, though- quite well, in fact."

By the gods she was gorgeous. I had seen more striking women, but never one who caught my heart so. I wanted to touch her, to caress the soft skin of her cheek, to kiss her again as I did at the palace. But I held her in respect far more than my wants. I offered her an arm to lead her back to the house. "Let us go drink that wine," I said, voice low and intimate.

Nodding in agreement I rested my hand lightly on his arm, nearly dizzy with the stir of emotions and the thread of anticipation that moved through them. "Of course," I nearly whispered as I repressed a tremble of pleasure, then forced my tone to steady before I continued. "What sort of wine do you favor?"

Laima, I was going into her home. I knew I shouldn't, not for propriety's sake. But it was just long enough to have a glass of wine, right? My nervousness increased at the phantom of Olga's voice, chiding me in that even way she has.
"I am... eager to taste any wine," I said with a smile, then paused. "Will this be proper?" I felt like a fool, having to ask, but if it wasn't, I would be an even greater fool.

For a moment I thought, nearly pausing and giving the question careful consideration, for I didn't want to seem flippant or not give him the fullest, most honest answer I could. "Proper in what sense?" I asked, catching his eye again. "By our terms, there is nothing improper about such a thing- but in truth, there is very little about a person's private affairs we find wrong. In terms of society- perhaps, but there are those who could find impropriety in every spoken word or slight glance. If it is wrong for you- only you yourself could know such a thing."

I frowned a little, still trying to wrap my head around this very different culture. "At home, if we were alone for a glass of wine, people would talk like... some other things happened. And the lady would have... a bad face. No, not face. Err..." I couldn't think of the word as we continued to walk closer to her home. "You know what I mean yes? I would not want that for you. If you say it is alright, then I will trust you. But I don't want to ruin you." Gods, too many words. I hoped I hadn't just stuck my foot in my mouth.

"A bad reputation?" I suggested quietly. "For d'Angelines, the damage to reputation comes not from following one's urges, but the opinion of the one those urges are followed with. Those who are too scandalous or unattractive will garner attention masqued as concern about the moral welfare of another, but in truth it is only a means to be cruel and judgmental while calling attention to a scenario. Whether it was a glass of wine or..." At that I had to trail off with a moment's blush, "Or other things, it is the same."
Taking a breath to gather my thoughts I smiled more brightly. "But it is alright in any sense, for what fault could anyone find with you? Those who speak poorly would be those who obviously had no idea who you are."

If I was honest with myself, I'd admit that I didn't understand a lot of what she said. Her vocabulary was far, far superior to mine. But it was enough to know that the thought of anything past a glass of wine made her blush, and that she was smiling at me like the sun appearing out of the parting clouds. My vocabulary was even worse in the face of such dazzling beauty. My wits were so scattered that it look a herculean effort to say anything at all.
"But now I think that people will find much more faults with me, than with you."

He seemed a bit confused, and somewhat dazed, so I reminded myself to speak more clearly and let him have time to think through what I'd said. Even so, his praise caused me to duck my head a bit in modesty and shyness. "That's not so," I said, fighting the urge to speak softly so he could understand me more easily. "There is much about me to find fault with."
It probably wasn't the best idea to point this out to him, for he seemed to have missed that fact completely, but I couldn't leave him in the dark. It felt like lying by omission to not let him see the truth he may have missed.

I didn't wish to contradict him in the face of his kind assuredness and looked back up, again smiling shyly if brightly. "I will do my best," I teased lightly, "To make that task as easy as possible for you."
We stepped up to the door and I smoothly opened it, then led him into the main foyer.

She led me inside, and the decor was as alien as our own townhouse. It was like there was too much beauty to see all at once, for everything was decorated with such care. So I concentrated on the woman at my side, rather than gape like a peasant. It wasn't hard, she was far more beautiful than the room.
"Then I shall thank the gods that you are not... running for the hills? I think that is the phrase." I had smiled charmingly, but it had melted into a puzzled frown as I struggled with the language.
