Nodding in agreement to signify his correct use I flushed a bit and led him toward one of the side drawing rooms, comfortably adorned with small things and neutral colors. Passing one of the servants I softly asked for some of the blush wine I favored and a bottle of Namarrese red to be sent it, then stepped into the room and brought him with me. "I wouldn't run- I have at least that much pride- and besides, I'd likely only trip over my own feet trying."
Looking around I found the room comforting and gestured at the chaise near the windows. "Please, sit," I said, waiting for him to do so before I sat myself.

I sat where she indicated, by the window overlooking her garden. I gazed at all the greenery for a moment before turning back to her. “It is so very different here. So… green and alive.”

"In Marsilikos it is even more so," I confided, waiting for the servant to bring in the tray and taking it with a smile and quiet thanks before walking over to where he sat and setting it on the table before me. "Though I must admit that the trees do better here with the lack of salt air."
Gracefully I poured us each a glass of the Eisandine blush and then set the bottle aside, offering the glass to him with a shy smile. "I find it lovely as well, which is why I enjoy this room so. It's very soothing."

I took the glass with a thankful smile. "Will you tell me about Marsilikos? Your painting was so beautiful, that I just want to know more."

"I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it so," I replied softly and with a sweet smile. "For a few moments before I sent it I worried over whether it was good enough to make a gift of- and then realized I may likely have been too hard on my own ability. You are most kind to think so well of it, though."
Smiling more brightly I turned toward the window from where I'd been gazing at him and sipped my wine. "Marsilikos is on the ocean- there's always a good deal of warmth, and water in the air that a good deal of things find wonderful for growing. The buildings are lovely and graceful and there are always many different sorts of people, either from the Academy or travelers and diplomats who visit." My voice was filled with fondness for my home before I turned back to him eagerly and with curiosity. "What is your home like?"

"It was a perfect gift," I assured her. "I wished I could have given you something... personal like that."
I watched her describe her home with an angelic look on her face, and tried to do my own home as much justice as when she spoke. "Our palace is set near the river Odessa, near so that we can go skating when the ice comes. Our palace is well guarded, but much smaller than the palace here. The buildings are very different, with roofs like eggs but with a pointy top." I traced the shape in the air. "Outside the land goes on forever. It is very beautiful, but just not... full. There is much land, some to farm, but much is forest. Perfect for hunting."
I thought for another moment before continuing. "We have visitors as well, more each year. Trade is now more important to us, not like when my father was a boy." What I didn't say was that I didn't think Father entirely approved of the merchants. But then, Father was a stick in the mud. An angry stick in the mud.

"It sounds a bit like a fairytale place- very exotic," I replied sincerely. "It must be interesting to see new places. I always wished a bit that I was more free to travel, but with taking my title at such a young age I don't feel as though it's permitted- something could happen while I was gone."
At that I bit back a sigh and forced my smile to brighten again. "How are you finding Terre d'Ange and the City? Even being from Marsilikos the sight of this place amazed me."

"I was amazed too," I said with a smile. "But the land has been so beautiful when we got off the ship. The City of Elua was like... like the jewels on a crown." Oh great, I had managed to embarrass myself again. Teach me to be poetic in a foreign language... "I am sorry, I do not have the skill to say what I want all the time." I couldn't look at her, only at the wine glass in my hand. I wish I didn't sound like such an idiot.

"I think you described it quite well, but if there was something else you were trying to convey I'd be happy to help," I suggested softly, not wanting to offend his pride or make him any more embarrassed. He looked so trapped within himself I couldn't help but reach out a hand to brush his lightly. "Or you could always say it in Ruskovian and I could try to puzzle it out- like something of a game."

"I want to say more, and do not know enough words. I want to say," and here I switched to my native tongue, "that the City crowns this land like the royal jewels on your queen, but the most beautiful jewel in that crown is you, you who are more beautiful than any empress, and so kind and humble that every man in sight should bow down before you." I finally raised my eyes to hers, uncaring as to the expression on my face, and my hand turned beneath her touch to hold her soft skin.

His expression and tone, coupled with the way his hand shifted and opened beneath mine, caused a brief shudder of desire and sweet affection over my skin and the faintest blush in my cheeks. "That is a good deal to say," I replied in a near-whisper, keeping his gaze. "And though I don't understand it, I know it is sweet and wonderful- so much so that I wonder if there is anything better in the world than what you say."
My fingertips continued to stroke his palm lightly and I was glad for the lack of dissembling the current moment seemed to bring.

I switched back to D'Angeline, though it was hard after letting my tongue go in Ruskovian. "I am not a poet. But I think that I could fall in love with this land, and the people here." One person in particular. Her fingers danced along the sensitive skin of my palm, so wonderfully distracting. Svaros, keep me strong.

"I am glad to hear that you think so," I said happily, glad for the effect I was having on him and that he enjoyed it so. My thumb lightly traced the inside of his wrist. "I'd be willing to venture that your land is as lovely in its own right though, with the light and the snow."

"It was not... because of not liking my land, or my people that I came here with my family. Or my brother's engagement. I was sad to go yes, but I was happy to... I was happy to leave some people behind." I hoped she got my message through the jumble of my speech. "Here, they are very gone. And I am free, and in the company of gorgeous lady." I smiled at that.

"I understand," I told him honestly. "Though I found leaving home a rather hard thing myself, but I'd never been outside my home in Marsilikos or my country estates. After my mother died I stayed to make arrangements and see that everything was secure, but once it was my father advised me to come to the City and make the world more known to myself."
Smiling as well I flushed a bit at his compliment. "In jest I would ask what gorgeous woman you've met, but I think you do mean me and I'd hate to turn aside such a lovely compliment. If I have had nothing else wonderful happen to me in the City I am glad that my being here allowed me to meet you."

"I do mean you," I said with a smile. Her cheeks were flushed so alluringly at the compliment that it was hard to remember to be a gentleman, and I couldn't help but run a finger along her thumb. "I must thank your father for advised... for telling you to come. You have been so kind and... welcoming." Laima, what was it about her that made my speech go south? It was more than simply beauty.

"I try to always be so," I said with a smile as though he'd afforded me the most wonderful of comments; the 'gorgeous' of earlier and his current words only made me feel all the happier. I wasn't often used to hearing such things, especially in such a setting, and my hand tingled where he stroked it. "I am very happy your family decided to come here as well- it's not often I find myself in the company of such a handsome and charming gentleman." Subtly I continued to stroke his hand, unthinkingly scooting a little bit closer to him as I sipped my wine.

"Then D'Angeline men are fools for not being in your company," I said honestly, then took a fortifying sip of wine. She inched closer and it nibbled at my concentration.

"I do not strike them as being like most d'Angelines, which is no fault of theirs," I replied in understanding, for I knew that something about me tended to unnerve others at times. I seemed to even be doing the same thing to Fydor at the moment, though he fought valiantly against my oddness. "I think they see me as frigid and removed."

"What does frigid mean?" I asked, brow creasing under the new word. From her tone I could tell it wasn't a good thing, and I wanted to know what it meant exactly so that I could fight it off. For Lessa was wonderful, and should know it.

"Bitterly cold, as unwelcoming as ice," I replied in a quiet tone. "I am not as demonstrative with what I am thinking and feeling as other d'Angelines seem to be and I think it confuses people from time to time."

My brow furrowed even further, if that was possible. "But you are not that. Not at all. Why could... How.... These people," I loaded the word with disgust, "should visit Ruskovia. They will learn that just because a woman does not act like a... nochnaja babochka, it does not mean that she is unworthy." I was more than indignant that anyone could possibly call her cold.

His vehemence startled me, though I didn't show it- I knew it was not directed at myself but others and accepted his point of view completely. Setting down my wine I rested my other hand lightly on his arm in a soothing fashion. "People find it often very hard to understand what they've never seen or experienced- and while I have seen other cultures and even learned some of the wonderful traditions they have, most don't have the benefit of doing so. I appreciate your kindness, but I would not see you upset." My gaze kept his openly and with warmth and affection.

I drew in a deep breath, telling myself to calm the svarga down. “I am sorry Lessa, but I would not have anyone say those things of you. They are not truth and so not… honourable.”

"You are very noble to say so," I nearly whispered, flushing again and then bravely grabbing on to what was niggling at my curiosity. "What is a nochnaja babochka?" I asked in a louder tone and with a renewed smile, speaking slowly and carefully to try and take in the inflections and enunciation.

"I'm sorry I mentioned it then," I said with a small smile, sympathetic to how he was feeling, having tripped over my own tongue on occasion. Thinking for a moment, my smile brightened further and I dared a soft tease, hoping to raise his spirits and hear him laugh. "But I must admit now that I have said it I'd like to know what it means anyway so I don't do so again. If I guess will you tell me, or should I go looking through what scant books I can find to learn it?"

I shook my head, unable to stop the smile. The laughter barely hidden beneath her words was infectious. “You might be able to find what the words mean, but as one it means more,” I told her, smile fading. “A nochnaja babochka is like your adept, but not so… good.”

"Ah," I replied with a nod and smile, understanding immediately; after all, a good deal of foreign travelers used such words when trying to explain or understand d'Angeline culture. "Then I am terribly pleased you don't think of me as such a thing."

"Never," I vowed. "You are a lady, a true lady, even in the eyes of a Ruskovian." I flushed then realizing I had just inserted my foot straight into my mouth. "Not that, I mean... I am sorry, I do not mean to offend."
