“Yes, I had a bit of lunch,” I said, letting myself look around some. “There is a small cart about midway that sells the most lovely little pastries. I thought perhaps we might get some if we made it that far.”

I smiled at her suggestion, looking down at her. I nodded. "That sounds like a good idea." I took one small step away from her, to encourage her to follow me, but still kept some contact in case she wanted my support, and as reassurance that I was right there and would be here to protect her.

I looked at him as he started to move away, and willed myself to follow him. I was still terrified, my heart beating like a trapped bird in my chest, but each step away from the carriage made the next one a little easier.

She followed and I watched her, though I made sure my attention was not drawn away from our surroundings. A couple came out of a nearby shop, and my eye caught them. An elderly couple, holding hands, and I smiled softly as they passed by, certainly not a threat, and took another step in the direction we were headed.
"What kind of pastries do you enjoy?" I asked her, hoping to steer her mind into conversation and away from her anxiety.

“I like sweet ones, but I like a few savory ones as well. The cart offers a chicken and nut pastry that is like nothing I’ve ever had before,” I told him, taking a few more deep breaths as we continued to walk.

"That sounds delectable right about now," I said with a smile, and it truly did. It seemed I could always eat, even if I had already stuffed my face a short while before. I was the bottomless pit. We contineud to walk, not at a great pace, but not one that stopped either. She was breathing, and there were not any signs of her about to faint. I smiled. She was stronger than she gave herself credit for. "I think my favourite kind of pastry to eat is a strawberry cheese danish. Combining the sweet of the strawberry with the savoury of the goat cheese. The best of both worlds!" I chuckled.

His description made me smile a little and I felt the fear inside me beginning to lessen just a tad. “Combinations like that are very nice,” I agreed. “I like hot and cold things together as well.”

"Ah so like a warm pie with iced, sweetend cream?" I asked, smiling. "I love that... but only apple pie."

“You don’t like any other pies?” I asked. I found myself relaxing enough to begin to look at some of the art that was on offer.

"Well," I said as I watched her look around at the items on display, and not the people, leaving me to worry about her safety. I had to smile at that. "I like strawberry pie, but I prefer it without iced cream. If the strawberries are ripe enough, it is sweet enough on its own. If anything I will put plain cream atop it. But apple pie is perfect because tis not too sweet nor is it too tart. What is your favourite pie?" I asked her.

“Peach,” I said, giving him a smile before looking around again. “We’ve a nice peach orchard on the estate and some of my earliest memories are of picking them and helping get them ready for the pies.”

I smiled in response. "You know, I have never had a peach pie, or even a peach cobbler," I said. "Perhaps I will have to try it someday and see what it is like." I looked about us. There were some people, none paying attention to us, or even the others around them, all focused on what they were doing, what they were searching for. There was no danger, which made me smile brighter. "So what kinds of art do you like?" I asked. "Paintings, drawings, sculptures?"

“I like sculptures the best, but paintings are nice too,” I answered. “What about you?”

"I like sculptures as well, just becuase they seem so real, as though the person they are depicting was frozen in stone by some sort of spell. But I do like drawings, sketches. Just the rawest form of fine art, I think. Seeing the preliminary before the end result. It is like a glimpse inside the workings of the artist's mind," I said, chuckling. "Did I warnn that I can be long winded at times?" I asked. I looked about again, of course, not even riveting conversation would make me stray from my purpose.

His answer was surprising, not for its length but for the depth of thought behind it. There was more to Maurice than I had realized, and I was pleased by it.
“It’s alright, I don’t mind long winded,” I said, chuckling softly. A sculpture captured my eye and I veered off to look at it. The dancer captured in stone was exquisite; I could almost hear the music to which she moved. It was created out of a pink marble I had never seen before and I found myself entranced.

She responded with a chuckle and then veered off suddenly, which put me on the offensive for a moment, looking about to see if she spotted something tht I had not, which would have been rather depressing for me, but she was just drawn to something, and went closer to look. I stayed by her side as she moved, falling into step beside her. I could not help but chuckle.
"You like this one?" I asked, not incredulously, just wondering at what had drawn her to it.

“I do,” I said, smiling as I looked up at him. “The work is amazing and I have never seen this color in marble before.” I looked at the statue again before looking back to him. “What do you think?”

"I think that if she was frozen in time, she was very happy. I wonder what she was dancing," I mused as I looked it over, though still kept my attention on teh surroundings. "And it is a lovely stone. I wonder what it is. If you look closely it even seems to sparkle, like it has quartz in it."

“Yes it does,” I said, my smile growing with pleasure that he had noticed that. I looked up at the vendor. He nodding happily, turning to wash his hands off before he began to head towards us.
“Don’t worry,” I told Maurice quietly. “I won’t make you carry it home.” I flashed him a grin.

I watched as the man approached us, checking his person with quiet scrutiny, though I smiled at Leyna's jest.
"I hope not! I don't think I would have been able to even if you had," I teased, "then again, men from Camlach do have a bit of an issue with loving to prove their strength," I laughed. "Do you have a garden or courtyard you would put it in?" I asked, my eyes on the man, though I smiled.

“There’s a glassed in arboretum at the far end of the house,” I told Maurice. “It would look perfect there.”
Then the merchant reached us and I smoothed my features. I asked him about the statue, letting him tell me the story behind its creation, certain he was embellishing, but enjoying it nevertheless. Then, I asked the price. He pondered, then named an exorbitant number, I pondered and countered. We went back and forth until I had him down to what I considered a fair price and I accepted his offer. I could tell by the gleam in his eye he was pleased. He went off to get papers for me to sign and I turned to Maurice, smiling at him again.
“Better than I thought he would take.”

I raised my brows as the exchange went on. She continued to surprise me. Or perhaps it was a stupid notion that I thought a princess would send someone else to do her haggling for her. She was not half bad at it, not at all. I chuckled as he walked away.
"You haggle with the best of them," I said with a coy smile and a soft laugh, though I smoothed my fetures back to sternness when he turned to look at us. I did not want him knowing she had gotten the better of him.
"It is a lovely sculpture. I am sure it will look lovely wherever it is put."

“Thank you,” I said, smiling at Maurice again before turning back to the merchant. He handed me papers and I signed the note to my factor for the cost, then filled in where to have it delivered. When the merchant took the papers back, he went pale upon looking at my signature. He bowed deeply and offered to lower the price.
“No, no,” I said, smiling at him. “You earned every ducat. I am well pleased.” He beamed and bowed again, promising to have the piece delivered before sunset. “Thank you.”
With that, I turned back to Maurice. “Shall we find those pastries now?”

It was interesting to see waht a name and title could do. Once the man had seen who she was, his demeanor changed entirely, and I had to raise my brows. It made me feel slightly self conscious in that I had taken a rather conversational tone with her, and wondered for a moment if I should be more business like in the way I conducted myself. Then again, I was sure that if there was something I was doing wrong, she would let me know, so I pushed the thought from my mind, and smiled as she turned to me.
"That sounds like a good idea," I said as I turned to look about us. There were more peopole about now, but still not a very large amount, and again, none that posed a threat.
"Do you know whereabouts it is?" I asked, turning my gaze to her again.

"Just down there," I answered, pointing to a stall with a red striped awning. "Easy to find once you know it's there.'
I smiled and began to walk towards the stall, a little slow though as I looked at the other pieces for sale.

She looked more relaxed now, and I felt more at ease, which was good. I spied the stall she was talking about, and followed close behind and beside her. "Do you ever have that feeling that you did not know you were actually hungry until the prospect of food comes up?" I asked chuckling, feeling my stomach growl slightly in anticipation.

I laughed softly, dipping my head just a bit. I was glad that she was okay with my sense of humour, not everyone understood or appreciated it. I took a deep breath of fresh air, letting it fill my lungs as I looked around once more, taking in my surroundings... our surroundings.
"I love the winter," I exclaimed, exhaling the breath I had held, smiling at her. "It is cold but so is Camlach. It reminds me of home, though for certain it is more mild here. Have you ever been to Camlach?" I asked her.
