“You don’t have to do that,” I said. “Thank you, but you shouldn’t have to leave your home just to see me to Malabelle’s house. I know the way.”

I frowned. "It's a bit of a walk, at least, and it's dark. At least let my carriage take you."

“Oh no…that’s even more trouble,” I said, shaking my head slightly. “I really don’t want to put you out.”

"You're not putting me out," I said, smiling gently. "If you don't get home safely, who is going to help me tomorrow in the store?" I put my hand on hers. "You cooked a lovely dinner for me, and we had a wonderful evening. This is the least I can do."

I smiled again and then inclined my head. “When you put it that way, I couldn’t possibly be so rude as to refuse your kindness,” I said, looking at him once more. “I would be honored if you would escort me home.”

I smiled. "If you will give me a moment, I will fetch our cloaks," I said.

“I’ll gather the books you are loaning me,” I told him with a smile. In truth, I was glad for the company and I would indeed feel safer.

I nodded, before stepping out of the room and going to fetch the cloaks from the hall closet. Putting mine on, I returned to the library and held out Marie's so that she could put it on easily.

I scooped up the books and then took a minute to let my eyes wander his library. I didn’t really see titles; just let the sheer number of works wash over me, my soul sighing softly with contentment.
Then he returned and I went to him, smiling my thanks as I settled my cloak around my shoulders. “All ready,” I told him with another smile.

I smiled, and offered her my arm, before we ventured out into the cold night. "It must be much colder in Camlach this time of year," I said.

“It is,” I agreed, chuckling and nodding a little. “Henri would have already brought the animals into the barns, except for the goats. Their hair is quite warming. I would be rising an hour earlier to get the fires going so that the house would be warmer for Papa when he got up.”

I smiled at the quaint, picaresque image. "Who is caring for your parents, now that all the children are here?" I asked.

My smile faded. “We found a woman from the town to come and live at the house and take over my duties taking care of Papa. A neighbor’s son is tending the animals. Our mother died a few years ago, so it is just Papa there.”

“Thank you,” I said, trying to push aside the pain. It was different than it had been before, there were the emotions involved with my reunion with Chris to contend with as well.
I shook my head a little, trying to clear my thoughts. “Papa and the farm will be well tended to until someone returns.”

“No,” I said, shaking my head a little. “I was never able to be myself, or anything that was close to a self, when I was there. Already here I have lived more than I did in all my years in Camlach. I won’t go back.”

I couldn't help but be pleased at her answer; I enjoyed having her around very much. "That's good," I said. "You should be in a place where you can be free, and live the life you want."

The temperature was dropping, and I could feel myself becoming a bit chilled. "Are you cold?" I asked.

I wasn’t really cold, Camlach was much colder than here, but I wasn’t exactly warm.
“A bit,” I answered.

"Would you like to come under my cloak?" I asked, holding out my arm to motion that I would put it around her shoulders.

“Thank you,” I said, stepping closer to him and under the shield of his cloak. It was much warmer like this and I smiled, feeling my fingers begin to warm where they held onto the books.

Taking her under my cloak served to warm us both, and we hurried along in a comfortable silence until we reached Malabelle's house. "Here we are," I asked. "Thank you for a lovely evening, Marie. I shall see you tomorrow."

“Thank you for a wonderful evening and for the loan of the books,” I said, smiling. Impulsively, I stretched up and kissed his cheek lightly.
“See you tomorrow.” I smiled wide and then hurried into Malabelle’s house, eager to begin reading.

She was gone before I could return her goodbye kiss. Smiling, I turned and began to hurry home, feeling much colder for her absence.
