“Oh, I will, I promise,” I told him with a smile. “I really do enjoy working for you. In truth, it doesn’t really feel like work.”

I laughed at that. "And why not?" I asked. "Maybe I need to make some changes."

“Oh no, not at all,” I said, shaking my head. “It is just so enjoyable. I like you and your company, and I love seeing the new items you get in and what has sold.”

"I'm glad you enjoy all of those aspects of work," I said. "And I am also glad you like me, I worried I was too harsh a taskmaster." A twinkle in my eye told her I was not actually worried about that at all. Someday I would promote her to manager, I thought, if she stayed long enough. "Did you happen to see the ginger roots that came in recently?"

"You should take some home with you next time you come in," I said. "I love the taste of it, I think you will too."

“I will, thank you,” I said, nodding and smiling happily. “Oh, I meant to ask you if you noticed the cassis liquor was getting low? When I was dusting the shelves I noticed there were only two bottles left.”

"There is some more in the storeroom," I said. "Thank you for noticing, I will be sure to put some more out." I paused thoughtfully. "If you notice that we are low on some items, you can make a note of it on a parchment where I will be sure to see it. Do you think you can do that, too?"

“Absolutely,” I said, nodding at him and smiling. “Is there a certain place you’d like me to leave it?”

“I will do that,” I said, before taking my last bite of duck. “Are there any other things you’d like me to keep an eye out for?”

I swallowed the bite I was chewing. "Not that I can think of," I said, before laughing. "Look at us, eating this nice dinner, and we can talk of nothing but work. Come, let's talk of something else. Read any good books lately?"

I blushed and looked down. “No,” I said, shaking my head a little. “I haven’t read anything new since we’ve come to the city. That probably sounds awful.” I knew he was a learned man, I should have known something like this would come up.

"Do you like to read?" I asked. "I've got a library full of books that are just itching to be read."

I finished the last of the potatoes on my plate. "Let's just say...I like a lot of poets," I said. "Creativity runs in this family."

My brow furrowed a little and I wasn’t sure what he meant. I didn’t ask though, I didn’t want to sound dumb.
“Well, if you wouldn’t mind me borrowing one of your books, I would be very grateful,” I told him.

"I don't mind," I said. "As I said, a number of my relatives are poets, and you're welcome to books by them, or anyone else."

"I don't know if this counts, but I like atlases," I said. "I like to see the world, even if it's only on paper."

“Those count,” I said with a grin. “I’ve not seen many maps; the ones I have seen are usually very local and used to determine where to plant things.”

"I see," I said. "While you're looking for books of poetry, you're welcome to look at the atlases of the world I have. It would be useful for you to know exactly where the goods in our shop come from."

“I will do that,” I said, nodding a little and then taking another drink of wine. I wondered if I should have said what I did about not having seen many maps; I wondered if he thought less of me.

Her taciturn reply made me wonder if I'd offended her in some way. "Is something the matter?" I asked. "Have I said something wrong?"

I glanced at him and then down at my empty plate as I debated whether to just say what I was feeling. Aramis had been so kind to me, and I felt him as much a friend as an employer. I owed him the truth.
"I worry at times that you will think me too county-born for all the things I have not seen or done," I said, looking up and meeting his eyes. "I am afraid I will let you down."

I was so flabbergasted that I set my fork down with an unseemly clank. "By no fault of your own are you country-born," I said. "And I shall never think any less of you for it. You are smart, clearly, and hardworking, and so far, you have fulfilled all of my expectations and more besides. I had no qualms about hiring you and I expect that you will give me no reason to regret that choice. What matters most is that you are willing to learn all that you do not know. If you make a mistake once, I expect that you will learn from it." I smiled at her. "I do not think you will let me down."
