“That sounds amazing,” I said, smiling at the picture she painted.

"It is," I said, still smiling softly. "I shall miss it this year."

"Yes. As my mother pointed out, it's time for both my brother and I to attend court. At least," I said, wrinkling my nose. "Until she can get us married off."

I chuckled at the look on her face. “Not looking forward to marriage?” I asked.

I sighed. "It's not that. I'm just not looking forward to the idiots I'm going to have to wade through to find the decent suitors."

"I might," I agreed with a smile, wondering if I would see more of Ciaran, or if my talk of finding a husband would scare him off of future encounters. "If the gods are kind."

"Truthfully? No," I said with a small smile. "We dictate much of our own luck."

“I agree,” I told her. “I think too often people give credit or blame to the gods for things that in fact are of their own doing.”

I grinned. It appeared that Ciaran and I were on the same page for many things. "Tell me, why do you think people find it so hard to be happy?"
|

Post by Ciarán Ringe on Dec 13, 2009 0:13:06 GMT -5
“Because they refuse to do what really makes them happy,” I answered. “Too often what makes someone happy isn’t thought of as right by society as a whole, so people don’t do it. They allow society to dictate their happiness.”

“Well, I knew a person once who detested having to wear clothes. She would have been much happier being nude all the time, but because society said she had to wear clothing she did and as a result she was always unhappy,” I told her.

"Fair enough," I said with a laugh. We passed a shop window filled with glassware, and I slowed down to look at the displays. "Oh, these are pretty." There was a selection of vases on one of the shelves, the glass stained a rainbow of colours.

“Yes, they are,” I agreed, my eyes roaming over the vases. I pointed to one that was blood red. “I’ve never seen glass that color before.”

I looked at it, and all I could see was blood running over flesh. "I haven't either. It's very evoking," I replied, my voice rather subdued before I forced myself to look at different vases. One caught my eye, an orange shot through with white. The colours were far merrier.

My gaze lingered on the red vase for a moment before looking at the others again.
“That took a lot of skill,” I commented, indicating one that had a rainbow of horizontal bands. “That’s quite impressive.”
