“Oh, a challenge,” I said with a laugh as we stepped outside and onto the sidewalk. “What if I disappoint?”

"I think you're man enough for it," I replied with a grin. "But I suppose we shall see." I loved teasing him.

“A compliment and insult all in one breath,” I said, laughing. “You do have the most delightful wit.”

I grinned again. "Thank you, my father raised me well," I said with a laugh.

"Only part of that can be from how you were raised, the rest is just you," I said, smiling at her charmingly.

I couldn't help but be pleased by his words, and I smiled. "Such a flatterer. I like it," I told him teasingly.

“Oh good, because I don’t foresee myself stopping,” I replied, still smiling. I was glancing at the shops as we passed, keeping an eye out for anything interesting but not seeing anything yet.

"Smart man," I said with a laugh.

“Too smart for my own good I’ve been told,” I added with a chuckle. “Though that’s never made sense to me. How can someone be too smart?”

"I don't think you can. But I believe danger lies in being over-aware of one's own intelligence," I said, quirking a grin.

“Perhaps, but then again if you don’t think you’re smart enough then you may not attempt some things,” I countered.

"Granted," I replied with a smile. I always liked when people didn't mind a good discussion.

“So, is it better to be aware of one’s intelligence, or to underestimate it and miss out on opportunities?” I asked her.

"Aware, but also aware of one's limits," I replied, my words slower as I thought.

“But how do you know your true limits unless you test them?” I asked. We passed in front of a store with a window full of carved wooden offerings and I stopped to glance at the selection.

"Do you constantly test yourself then?" I asked as we looked into a shop. There was a carved wooden cat in the window. It made me smile and think about getting a kitten.

"I do," I said, nodding a little. There was an intricately carved wooden tree, about a foot tall, that caught my eye.
"Do you mind if we go in here? I'd like to look at that tree."

"Thank you Ciaran," I said with another wide smile. I entered the store and began to look around, heading in the direction of the window display.

I followed her in, taking a moment to appreciate the view of her from behind before turning my attention to the items on display. I joined her at the window display, focusing on the tree. The limbs were barren, and yet somehow there was still a sensation of it being windblown. The wood was stripped with varying shades that ribboned through the carving.
“This is incredible,” I murmured, running my finger gently over the polished wood.

"It certainly is," I agreed, studying the carving. And studying the way he caressed the wood. "The artist has created something just as beautiful as the real thing."

“Yes, they have,” I agreed softly. “It’s so stark and yet so beautiful.” I realized how engrossed I’d become in the carving and looked up at her with a little smile.
“I like it,” I said, chuckling low.

"I don't really have much of anything that can't be just packed in a trunk and taken with me," I answered. I looked back at the tree. I really did like it.

"Are you eager to move on then?" I asked, not sure what to make of his pronouncement. I knew he had a wandering spirit, he had been quite open about it. But knowing he might move on someday and to have him thinking about it right then and there were two different things.
