"No," I said after a moment's thought. "I find that my wanderlust has been tempered of late."
I looked back at her and smiled. "I should buy it then, eh?"

I chuckled, glad of his answer. "I think so, but it's your money."

I chuckled at her reply. "I'm going to go find a clerk, you'll not get lonely will you?"

I laughed at that. "I think I can manage," I teased back.

“Oh good, I wouldn’t want you to wander off,” I said, smiling. I leaned in closer as if to share a secret with her.
“You never know what sort of people are out there and what evil thoughts they might have,” I whispered. Still smiling, I straightened up and gave her a wink before going to find a clerk.

I smiled at his jest, though it struck me a little... odd. But I didn't let it bother me, wandering over to the carved cat I had spotted from outside. I was thinking more and more about getting a kitten.

I found a clerk and bargained over the price for the tree. Once we'd reached an agreement, I handed over my coin and he went to wrap the carving for me to take home.
"That's lovely," I said about the kitten Sophie was admiring.

"It is, though I was just thinking the real thing would be even better," I replied as I turned to him. "I haven't had a cat since I was a girl."

I thought about a kitten my sister'd had when I was little. She hadn't had it for very long, though no one but me knew what exactly had happened to it.
"You should get one then if you like," I said, smiling. "As you've shown me, such desires should be fulfilled."

"I think I will. Not today though," I said with a smile. "I should at least mention it to the housekeeper first."

“I am,” I said, taking the wrapped parcel from the clerk and then holding the door open for Sophie.

"Thank you," I told him with a smile as I walked past him and through the door. I paused on the other side to give him a chance to catch up.

I followed her through the door and then offered her my arm. “Shall we continue strolling?” I asked.

"I think that sounds like a lovely idea," I said with a smile, taking his arm. "Lead on, oh treed one."

I headed us in the direction we’d been walking before. “Treed one, that could have so many different connotations,” I said with a chuckle.

"Well, I was going to ask if you'd prefer to be a young sapling that bends to the wind, or a solid, knotted mature tree." I grinned, unable to help myself.

“Well, I’ve never thought of myself as young. I’ve never felt like one who bends with the wind. So, I guess I would have to say of those two options I would choose the mature tree,” I answered.

Solid and thick, with interesting bumps, I thought to myself naughtily. It made my grin stay on my face.
"In what season?" I asked.

“Winter,” I answered without hesitation. “Perhaps that what drew me to the carving.”

“I like being out in it. Feeling the cold and everything seems to be holding its breath, waiting. The anticipation running beneath the stillness is like a pulse,” I said, smiling. “But then, I haven’t had many winters with snow like that. Most of my time was spent too close to the coast.”

"You should come visit L'Doux in the winter then. There's a pond we use for skating, and if you get out before the children do, you can find that stillness," I replied with a soft smile, thinking fond memories of home.
