I dozed for most of the ride, cradled in Darien's warm, strong arms. When the carriage pulled to a halt outside my house, the jolt caused me to stir. "Are we here?" I asked him.

“We are,” I said, caressing her hair softly. “Are you ready to go in?”

I nodded. "I'm famished," I said. Now that we were away from the cemetery, my stomach was rumbling painfully.

“Can you walk or shall I carry you?” I asked gently, not minding at all if she wanted me to carry her.

I laughed pathetically. "I don't know if I can make it," I said. "I feel so weak."

“Then I shall carry you,” I said with a smile. I gathered her in my arms and then exited the carriage. “To the front door?”

I nodded. "If you set me down in the front room," I said, chuckling at my own weakness, "there's a loaf of banana bread and a chicken pot pie in the warmer in the kitchen. We can eat that."

“That sounds nice,” I said, carrying her inside and setting her down on the couch once we were inside.

I shifted so I was lying on my back. "There are oven mitts by the stove," I told him, "and dishes in the cupboard." My arm flopped over my forehead. "I can't believe I forgot to eat."

“I can,” I said, kissing her cheek. “I’ll be right back.”
I went into the kitchen and began getting everything arranged, fixing some tea while I was at it.

I smiled wryly at his comment as he kissed my cheek, and when he left the room, I closed my eyes. I didn't feel like I was going to break down, but you never knew. I could hear Darien moving about the kitchen, and I was struck by such gratitude and affection.

It took a little extra time since I looked for a few extra things, but eventually I had a tray full and hoped she would like it. There were two servings of the chicken pie, a plate with slices of the bread, a pot of steaming tea, cups, honey, milk, and I’d even nipped outside the backdoor and found a daisy to add to the mix.
Smiling, I returned to the front room and set the tray down on the table near where she lay. “Here we are.”

I opened my eyes to sit up and look at what he'd done. "Oh, Darien, how thoughtful," I breathed. "Thank you so much."

“It’s my pleasure,” I said, smiling softly as I poured her a cup of tea. “I hope it helps you a little at least.”

"It's perfect," I told him. "I can't imagine anyone being more helpful or supportive than you have been today."

“I’m just glad I can be here for you,” I said, smiling and setting the pot down once both cups were full. “What would you like to start with first?”

"Tea, please," I said, accepting one of the cups. "I probably shouldn't eat first, or I'll make myself sick."

“Perhaps a little bit of the bread would be a good thing too. Just liquid might not be the best either,” I suggested, breaking off a small bit of one of the slices and offering it to her.

"You're probably right," I said, taking the bread from him. I took a tiny nibble, then washed it down with a sip of tea. The little bit of food in my stomach began to stimulate me, and I felt myself getting even hungrier. I took a bigger bite of bread, making a small sound of pleasure at finally eating again. "Mmph, exactly right," I told him. "By Elua, I've never felt so hungry."

I took a healthy bite of bread. "I think I will be," I told him. "I already feel a little better."

I smiled as I watched him eat, before taking a bite of my own pie. It really was delicious, and I had to resist stuffing it down.

My food was gone quickly. “That was very good,” I said, setting down my empty dish and taking a sip of tea.
