"I'll be sure to tell the neighbor," I said, working on my own halfway gone slice. "Are you still hungry? You can have as much as you want."

“Oh no, I’m good,” I said, smiling. “Thank you though.”

I nodded. "You're welcome," I said. "It's the least I can do."

I watched her for a moment, looking for the telltale signs of how she was really doing. “Feeling a little more like yourself?”

I sighed, pushing back my hair. "A little," I said. "I have that nagging feeling, the one where you've lost something important, but you can't remember where you left it."

“That’s understandable,” I said, smiling softly as I reached over and squeezed her hand gently.

I squeezed his hand back, meeting his eyes. "I can't think what I would have done without you," I said.

“I’m glad you didn’t have to find out,” I said, smiling. “I’m glad I could be here for you.”

I smiled. "I'm glad, too," I said, then yawned. "Elua, I'm exhausted."

“You should sleep,” I said, smiling. “I’ll clean up, you have a rest.” I began putting the empty dishes on the tray.

I nodded. "Thank you," I said, curling up on the sofa in a more comfortable position.

I carried the dishes into the kitchen and went about cleaning up, trying to be as quiet as possible so I wouldn’t wake her if she fell asleep.
After a time everything was clean and straight and I returned to the other room to check on her.

I fell into a light sleep, the sounds of Darien puttering around faintly reaching my ears. I hoped he wouldn't leave, I wanted him to stay, I thought as I drifted into deeper sleep.

She was sleeping when I returned and I smiled softly to see her resting. I found a light blanket and laid it over her, then leaned in and kissed her forehead softly.

I made a soft, sleepy noise as even in my sleep I felt the covers and the kiss. Stirring a bit, I breathed his name..."Darien..."

“Shhh,” I whispered, caressing her hair softly. “Sleep, you need it.”

"Mmm," I said sleepily. "All right..." I drifted off again.

I stayed until I was certain she was asleep again. Quietly I stood and made my way out, leaving her to rest. She needed sleep and it was more than likely I’d do something to wake her if I stayed. I shut the door silently behind me and returned to my salon.

I don't know how long I slept, but when I woke, I woke with a start. The house was dark and chilly and there was not a sound about. "Darien?" I said tentatively. No response. "Darien!" I called again. Nothing. He must have left. Unbidden, I began to sob, long, wracking cries that hurt from deep inside. I cried for poor Zahav, and I cried for my own, pathetic self, who just wanted Darien to stay.
