“Ah yes, boredom is to be avoided at all costs,” I said, smiling.
One last turn and we were out in the gardens. “Ah, here we are.”

"Oh, it's beautiful," I said, looking around with wide eyes and a large smile as he led me in. "I think this might even beat the Gardens of Shallalat."

“They are lovely,” I agreed. I wasn’t much for gardens other than in an abstract sort of way, but these were quite nice.

His tone was rather neutral. "Not a big lover of plants?" I asked him with a smile.

“Not a big one no, but neither do I dislike them,” I said, smiling. “Gardens make a pleasant place to walk, to sit or things like that, but it’s more the atmosphere that appeals to me than the plants themselves.”

"I must admit, I'm partial to gardens with water. A stream, or a pond. Especially if there are fish," I said with a laugh.

“I’m certain there’s one of those here at the Palace somewhere. They seem to have everything else,” I said, chuckling.

I chuckled. "Indeed they do. How does it measure up to Amilcar? I've never been," I said as we began to wander the garden.

“The gardens there are lovely. Not quite as opulent as these, but very nice. My own home is much closer to the sea and more exposed so the gardens there are more tailored to the climate,” I told her.

"Tell me more about your home," I requested, intrigued.

“It on the west side of southern tip of Aragonia, closer to Carthage than to anything else in truth. The castle is large and made of stones polished smooth by the constant salty winds of the sea. The sea is so close you can hear it constantly, the steady heartbeat of the world, slow and steady in the calm, fierce and frantic when the storms rage,” I told her, my voice growing softer as I remembered my home and ached for it. “I love the birds too, the seabirds that sing their songs to each other as they ride the winds, freer than any other creature in the world.”

"That's what I miss most about traveling. The sea, and the sense of freedom it inspires. You can go anywhere on the water, or nowhere at all," I mused softly, almost to myself.

"You miss home," I said, not questioned. I could hear the ache in his voice, for it struck a nerve in my heart. "How long have you been away?"

“Since the beginning of spring,” I said, pang going through me when I thought about how long it had really been.

“Basically. I have a couple cousins here, but they arrived before me and are here for their own reasons.” I glanced at her. “And you, are you here alone?”

"Yes," I said softly. "This might sound silly, but this is the first time I've truly been away from my family. Even when I traveled, it was with my brother."

“It doesn’t sound silly. In Aragonia women are not allowed the same level of freedoms they are here, so a young, beautiful woman who hasn’t been out unescorted does not seem odd to me,” I told her, smiling.

"Still charming me?" I teased him with a smile, breaking out of the more fragile mood of a moment ago. If we lingered there much longer, I would start thinking of my brother, and then he would be kind. And then I would probably start crying. Not good.

"Oh no, you're definitely charming me. But that's alright, I don't mind," I teased him with a grin. We neared a bench surrounded by wonderfully fragrant flowers. "Shall we sit?"

“Yes, let’s,” I said, releasing her arm so I could brush the couple stray leaves off the bench and then smiled and gestured for her to sit first.

I took a seat beside her and then a sip of my wine.
“This is a lovely spot,” I said, looking around at all the flowers.

“I am the youngest of three children and have spent most of my life in Aragonia and preferably my home in the south. I have been learning guitar since I was eight and I am here to give lessons at Eglantine,” I said, compressing my life into those two sentences. Amazing how neat and tidy it sounded when put that way. “What else would you like to know?”
