I glanced up at her again. “That’s rather a lot to do in one session, especially your first. Plus, that’s a rather costly part of the Jasmine marque.”

I sighed audibly, rising to my knees, turning away from him but watching him over my shoulder as I removed the robe and wrapped it around my waist. "Well, you are the professional, afterall. I'll have whatever my money can pay for, in that case. My body is your canvas." I gave him a warm smile, even though disappointed, and returned to my original position, arms under my head, lying on my stomach.

I titled my head slightly and looked at her. “Would you prefer to go to another marquist?” I asked. “If you are not satisfied with my methods I can refer you to someone else.”

I looked at him, bewildered. "No, Darien. Not at all." I think he may have misunderstood. I sighed. What a royal mess I've made of this I thought to myself.
"I'm sorry if you think I don't approve of your methods. I'm new to this, I have no idea how much it would have cost to get that flower, and I guess I was mainly just disappointed in myself for not knowing, and for coming across as an unintelligent little chit. I came here because I want you to do it. You take your art seriously, and I understand that," more than you know I added to myself, "I'm sorry if I have offended you. I thought that telling you my body is your canvas would have let you know that I trust you with it, and I trust your wisdom in this." I looked up at him, my eyes pleading, hoping he would understand that I didn't mean to slight him, or his work. I wanted him to know that, to me, what he does is amazing, that it's not just a marque.

“I’m not offended, I just want to make sure that you are comfortable,” I said. At least three quarters of the adepts who came in here made some reference to their body being my canvas. I held out the contract for her to look at. “Here are the prices I will charge for each inch of your marque, though of course we don’t have to do full inches at a time.”

I looked at the prices. They were high, but from what I had heard, the price fit the skill.
"Maybe starting off small is a good idea. Possibly an inch? I think that would be best, especially to see how my pain tolerance holds up and the length of time it takes?" I said, thinking out loud and asking his opinion at the same time.

“An inch would be a good start, and with the base of the Jasmine marque like it is, an inch gives more of an impression than you might think,” I said, smiling.

"Exactly!" I beamed, a smile coming to my lips. "Thank you for your help. An inch it is!" I was so excited, and this time I decided not to hide it. I could have hugged him, but then realised that, with me being nude, it was probably not the wisest of ideas, so I reached out my hand for him to shake instead.

Smiling still, I took her hand and shook it, then offered her the contract and a quill for her to sign with.

I took the quill and contract in one hand, leaning up on my elbows to use the table to press on while I affixed my signature. I looked at it for a moment, memorizing it as marking another step in my life, and exhaled a deep breath I didn't know I held.
"Thank you," I said, nodding to Darien and handing back the quill and contract. "I am ready when you are!"

“I’m ready,” I said as I stood, signed the contract as well and set it aside. “Make yourself comfortable and then we can start.”

I settled back into my original position, my head resting on my folded arms. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I was as ready as I would ever be.
"Alright," I said, taking in the scents surrounding me, "I should be able to stay comfortable in this position for a long time."

I picked up the tray with my tools and set it on the small side table nest to where she lay. I brushed her hair aside and then ran my hands over her back again, smoothing the skin.
“If you need me to stop, even for just a moment, all you need do is speak up,” I told her as I picked up the stylus and tapper. “Try to breathe slow and steady, it will help with the pain and make it easier for me.”

"Understood," I said quietly, slowing and steadying my breathing, but making sure I didn't focus so hard I passed out. I stayed quiet, waiting to feel the initial pang of pain, steeling myself against it.

I dipped the stylus into the ink and positioned it at the base of her spine. “Ready?” I asked.

"Yes," I nodded. "I am ready."

With that I brought the tapper down and imprinted the first of her marque into her flesh. With ease I slipped into the rhythm of my work.

I remained as still and silent as possible, although once in a while, especially initially, my back would arch mildly under the tapping of his tools. It's not that it really hurt, it was like hitting a nerve, and it felt oddly good. A small groan escaped my lips as he continued on. "Thanks, father," I murmured sarcastically under my breath, thinking on the Kusheline blood coursing through my veins. If it continued like this for too much longer, I would definitely need a break.

Distantly I heard her murmur something, but she didn’t sound distressed so I kept working. Eventually the inch was reached and I straightened up fully.
“Done, but don’t move yet, the ink is setting.”

I expelled the breath that I was holding. I'm definitely going to need a drink and an assignation after this I thought to myself chuckling. I tried not to move overmuch, waiting for the ink to set. I noticed Darien shift to an upright position beside me.
"Thank you so much Darien," I said cheerily, "I cant wait to see your work."

“Just a moment and you can see for yourself,” I said with a smile as I flexed my fingers and then began to move stuff back to the counter.

"That didn't take too long," I said, making conversation while I waited. "How did I hold up? I tried not to move too much, though I guess a bit of movement is inevitable..."

“You did well,” I said, giving her a smile. “Some movement is inevitable yes, but some people move too much for me to adjust to why I’m working. You did well.”

I made abrief nod. "Thank you. Should I remain still longer? The suspense is nearly killing me," I said, grinning wider with earnest anticipation.

“Just a bit longer,” I said, retrieving the pair of hand mirrors.
“Here,” I said, offering her one. “Look over your shoulder in it and I’ll let you see how it looks.” I positioned the other one so that it would reflect her marque.

I took the mirror from Darien and thanked him, peering in the mirror to get the proper angle to hit off of the mirror in his hand. When I caught sight of it, I gasped. Although it was just a small amount, it was amazing. "You were right, even an inch makes an impression!" I was astonished, considering I wasn't sure if his earlier words were just used to soothe me or if they were purely the truth. I had my answer now.
I looked over my shoulder at the talented man holding the mirror. "Thank you again, so very much Darien," I whispered, heartfelt and true, blushing slightly at the emotion in my voice.

“It was my pleasure Sefirah, truly,” I said, smiling. Setting the mirrors down I began retrieving the bandages and salve. “How’s the pain?”

"Delicious," I laughed playfully, "but really, not so bad. It's more of an annoyance than a pain when its all over and done with, like hitting a sensitive nerve. A lot fo the fact that it didn't hurt probably had a great dela to do with your skill. Your touch was very light to make such a bold mark."

“Thank you, I’m glad to hear it’s not too bad,” I said, smiling. I uncorked the clay pot and carefully applied salve to her marque. “This will help it heal faster as well as diminish the pain. I’ll give you a little jar to take home with you. you need to keep it clean and try for at least five days, so no soaking in baths, sorry.”

I pouted. I know he must know how much we enjoy our soaks, us adepts, but it was a small price to pay. "I'm guessing I should try not to allow any fabrics to irritate it or... to ... apply a great deal of pressure to it until it heals? About how long does it take?" I asked. I guess this would mean that assignation I had in mind may have to wait a little while. I wanted badly to stand and stretch, but I knew that would have to wait.
