The Baroness who’d supposed to come for a sitting this morning had canceled due to a family emergency so I was left with a large amount of free time and the urge to draw.
Taking a pad and my charcoals, I wandered the streets until I found something that called out to be captured. Sitting down on the edge of planter, I opened my pad and began to sketch the workers who were redoing the façade of a building across the street.

I'd been coming back from the bookstores I'd been searching for a few needed texts- one on treaties made during the Akkadian conflict, and another of Menhekatan customs, and a few on watercolor painting I'd been entranced by. Most of them were being delivered to my home, but one of them I kept near me, to read if I decided to find some lunch while I was out.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw a man working with charcoals, looking at some people working on a building, and before I knew what I was doing I drifted closer slowly to peek at what was being put on the paper.

In the midst of reaching for a darker shade to fill in the pools of shadow on the west side of the building, I noticed a lady watching me. I smiled pleasantly, not at all minding, and then returned to what I was doing.

I was only a few steps away by the time he noticed me, and smiled- which made me realize how nosy I was being, and how presumptuous. Flushing, I nodded and smiled shyly in return even as my eyes moved to the paper to see what he was working on.

I had been close to finishing when I noticed the lady, so it was but a moment before I was done and I looked up to see if she was still there.
Smiling again, I turned the pad where she could see more easily.

Flushing again I looked over the piece and smiled, liking the intricacy of the many parts of it, stepping closer once again to take it in. Art was one of the classes I'd taken as a child, and one of the ones I'd enjoyed above the others. "Thank you," I told the man softly and sincerely. "It's very nice. I'm sorry I was so rude- I just saw you working and was intrigued by what you were sketching."

“Thank you,” I said in reply to her compliment. “And I didn’t think you rude in the least. Art is meant to be shared.”

"But what if I'd distracted you with my movement, and you hadn't been able to share it at all?" I said almost whimsically, smiling a bit beneath my pink cheeks. "I'd hate to be responsible for such a tragedy."

“Have no fear of that with me,” I told her with a smile. “I have been drawing long enough that nothing distracts me unless I want it to.”

"I am much relieved then," I told him sincerely. "Will you make a painting based on the sketch, or do you prefer to work in charcoals alone? I studied a bit of art as a child but I'm afraid I never grasped the subtleties of working in black and white."
For me I was nearly being a chatterbox and I wondered at it, blushing a bit again and wondering if I was making a fool of myself with the impromptu conversation- and then realizing it was probably good for me. I couldn't go around forever assuming that people would simply want to talk to me. After all, that plan had me more often ignored than spoken with.

“I work in both paints and charcoals, but likely this will stay a sketch,” I answered, delighted at the turn the conversation had taken. “Charcoals are more easily transported for me, so I can do as I did today and just walk around until something strikes me. Also, they are less expensive than paints so I can give into my whims more often.”

"I've heard of some who capture a moment in charcoal, then expound on the idea in paints later with the drawing as a sort of permanent memory," I explained shyly. "Thus I was wondering if that was what you intended to do." He seemed to enjoy talking to me, and even as I wondered at it I wasn't ready for the conversation to stop.

I turned my whole body slightly so I was facing her more fully. “I have done that before, especially in an occasion such at this where the situation is not one that will linger,” I said, nodding slightly towards the construction work. “I draw so often though that if I were to transfer all my sketches to paintings I’d have no time to work.”
I chuckled and flipped back through the pad to find another sketch. This one was of an impromptu celebration parade that had happened back at Mid-Winter. “I am turning this one into a painting though,” I said as I showed her the sketch.

Leaning closer I tucked my hair behind my ears, eyes moving steadily over the picture to take in all of the details before I looked up again and caught his gaze for a brief moment with my own blue-green one. "It will be lovely, and it's so delicately detailed," I replied with a smile. "Do you sell your works? I will have to try and find this one to see if I can secure it for myself if that is the case."

“Yes, I do sell my work,” I said. Reaching into an inner pocket I retrieved a calling card and offered it to her. “If you’d like I can notify you when this is done so you may see it first.”

Delicately I took the card he offered, reading it quickly before I shyly nodded. "I'd like that, Lord Kachine," I told him sincerely. "I'm Lessandrie de Mereliot, it's a pleasure to meet you."

"If you will call me Lessa," I agreed with a bright smile, glad I hadn't seen that momentary shock so many people express at the fact someone like me is the Lady of Marsilikos. "You're a marquist as well?"

“I am,” I answered. “In fact I am a marquist primarily.” Glancing back at the workers, I felt the urge to sketch some more. “Do you mind if I draw while we talk?” I asked, finding a blank page.

"Oh, of course not," I said, eyes wide. "I can even be quiet, if you like. I'd hate to be a bother- though if you don't mind I'd like to watch a bit more." A small, shy smile creased my features as I blushed the slightest bit. "I don't want to be a bother."

“You’re not a bother in the least,” I told her with a smile, turning back to face the building. “And we can talk or you can just watch, whichever you prefer.”
There was a worker painting one of the front walls and I focused on him, the concentration on his young face calling out to me.

With intense concentration I watched his hands for a moment, seeing how he made lines and then shaded in the shadows, then smiled. "What, do you think, draws you to the things you decide to record?"

“I tried to figure that out once, but never could settle on a real answer,” I told her as I switched to a different charcoal. “I am drawn to people in any situation, I will never tire of capturing them. Other than that, it’s usually just a feeling when I see something. My eyes see something and my fingers will start to itch.”

"I paint- not well, or much, but sometimes I just like to," I said shyly, quick to keep myself on an amateur level where I really belonged. "Mostly the ocean, these days, and what I remember of it."

"Really?" I asked, for a moment surprised and terribly pleased someone would want to look at my doodlings before I blushed again. "I mean, of course- but they really aren't very much to look at, especially compared to the work you do."

Flushing a bit more brightly, for I worried he thought I'd disregarded his words I smiled nevertheless. "Then I would be glad to show them to you, whenever you have time and the inclination," I told him honestly, and bit back the urge to again subtly apologize for the fact he may not find them as good as he hoped.
