“I have both now,” I said as I finished the sketch and held it up for her to see more easily. “Unless I would be interfering with your day.”

"No, not in the slightest," I told him sincerely, then looked over the finished drawing. "It's fantastic- you were born with a great deal of talent." A sweeter smile spread over my features with my sincerity and happiness at being able to see such a thing as his rendering.

“Thank you,” I replied with a smile. Putting my charcoals away, I closed my pad and then stood up.
“Shall we go see your work?” I asked, offering her my hand up.

Shifting my book to my other arm I nodded shyly, then delicately took his hand after I'd tucked my chin-length red hair behind my ears. "It's not far," I assured him with a smile.

With all propriety, for I knew neither her station nor marital status, I slipped her arm through mine and looked around. “Which way?” I asked with a smile.

Gods, already I as making faux-pas. Still, this one I could recover from easily enough. "That way," I indicated with a nod. "It's the first house on the second street- really, the walk up the drive is longer than the one on the roads." With a light laugh I fought down the urge to flush again.

I laughed with her as we began to walk. “How long have you been in the City?” I asked.

"Since the beginning of winter," I replied, realizing when I said it how little time it sounded like, though it felt like twice that. "I came to see King Ambrose's coronation, and then the work to be done has kept me here. What of you?"

“I’ve been here my whole life,” I answered. “I spent a little time in the Night Court, but most of my life has been spent out in the City.”

"Were you an adept?" I asked curiously.

“Not exactly. I was at Eglantine, but I was no good at all the things adepts have to do that had nothing to do with art. When I was fifteen, my contract was bought by master Kachine who trained me as a marquist,” I told her.

"It must have been very interesting to grow up as steeped in art as Eglantine is," I replied with a smile. "As a child when I had time I'd visit the artists that work in Marsilikos from time to time- Tiberian muralists, Menhekatan sculptors, in the marketplaces they were everywhere and with the most beautiful things."

“Had I been able to just concentrate on art, I never would have left Eglantine,” I said, smiling. “I’ve seen representations of some of the works in Marsilikos and they are amazing. I’ve always thought that should I travel that would be my first destination.”

"I can understand why not being able to concentrate on that alone would be difficult," I replied. "The artists I have met are almost consumed with it, the need to create in their medium of choice."

“That exactly how it is,” I agreed, smiling wide at her words. “Fortunately, I am able to work in several mediums but they are all consuming in their ways.”

“You do understand then,” I said, pleased. “There are many people who just don’t understand how that is, how there can be a work inside you just begging for freedom and it will not be denied.”

"I only wish I had the ability to put that feeling into the work with as much skill as I yearn for," I admitted softly. "Or that I had enough time to keep in practice."
We were nearly to the gates of my estate and I absently looked up to see if my falcons were being flown at the moment- the sky was clear, so it was likely a few of them were being exercised. The sky was a lovely blue and I smiled wider to see it.

Noticing her gaze, I followed it, looking up at the sky. “Is there something up there?” I asked curiously.

"Nothing that isn't usually," I said with a smile, even as I flushed at being caught in my distracted musings. "The sky looks lovely to me today, and I looked up to see if my birds were being flown at the moment."

“Birds?” I asked, curiosity instantly peaked. “What type of birds do you keep?”

"A few," I admitted. "Hunting birds, songbirds, and I even have some herons and egrets I've brought in to habitate the garden during the warm months. I have a fondness for them, it seems."

“Is there any chance I could see them as well while I’m here?” I asked hopefully. “It’s not often I get to see such creatures up close.”
