"You are quite welcome. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be in my corner over there and you will walk in like sunlight on a cloudy day," I said, smiling. I broke off a piece of one of my cookies and popped it in my mouth.

"I don't know if I'm exactly a ray of sunshine but I'm sure I could at least make a good entrance." Putting down my tea I picked up a portion of cookie and took a bite. "Otherwise no one could tell I was a Dahlia if I didn't put on the pretentions."

"Do you really think of them as pretensions?" I asked curiously after swallowing my bite of cookie. "I have known people who try to act like they were raised in Dahlia, now there are pretensions. I have always thought Dahlia's possessed of a natural grace and sense of self that set them apart."

"Pretention is in the eye of the beholder," I replied with a raised brow. "But perhaps it was a bad word. 'Mannerisms' is what I really meant. I only know that I act how I was born and raised to behave and that some people do find it pretentious. Besides, sometimes humility can be flattering as well."

"Humility can be flattering, but self confidence is an aphrodisiac," I countered, smiling.

"Alyssum and Cereus would disagree but you're right, confidence looks much better on a Dahlia," was my reply. "Though we do have our own slices of humble pie on occasion."

"That's not a dessert I have ever cared for," I said, grinning. "I much prefer lemon cookies." With that I popped another bite into my mouth.

"It's an aquired taste," I replied, hiding a smile as I took another sip of my tea. "And lucky are those who never have to. I find it makes justified pride that much sweeter for the bitterness of it. When you fall from your pedestal you learn from the mistake and feel all that more confident when confronted with the issue again."

"I much prefer the sweet taste of preparing well and never falling at all. I don't handle failure with grace, so I avoid it as often as possible," I told her.

"You are Bryony, planning is part of your nature- I tend to be more free-form and just take what is handed to me." Picking up another piece of cookie I gracefully placed it on my tongue and ate the morsel. "Your way is much more sensible, I'll admit that much."

"Doing things the way that is best for you is the most sensible. There is nothing to be gained by forcing someone to act against their nature." I finished my first cookie and took a sip of tea. "This is how I am, there was never a question of me going to a different House once I was brought to the Night Court. My way wouldn't work for most others though."

"I would have resisted very strongly had anyone suggested I end up in a different House- my family has very strong ties to Dahlia," was my explanation as I cupped the tea in my hands.

"You said your mother was an adept there, was she the only one or were more of your relatives in the House?" I asked curiously.

"A long line," I told him. "Back to the beginning of the House if the family history is to be believed and traced as far back as ten generations."

"Wow," I said, truly impressed. "That is an impressive history that not many can claim anything close."

"I've met a few people from other Houses who can claim similar histories but they are very rare," I agreed, a slight smile on my face as I hid the thoughts that were flying through my head behind my eyes. "What about your family, or is it too uncomfortable to speak of?"

"I don't have any true family that I know of. My parents passed when I was five and no one has ever been able to locate any other family," I told her, no hint of bitterness or pain in my tone. I had memories of my parents from when I was very young, and the people that had raised me had been kind. "My parents were d'Angeline but living in Alba when I was born. When I was five, we were making the journey back to Terra d'Ange and they died from an illness that swept through the ship. I was raised by the harbor master and his wife where we landed until I was ten. During all that time they looked for any relatives I might have and were never able to find any. I've made some inquiries since I've been at Bryony, but nothing has turned up."

"Do you remember what reason they were in Alba for?" I asked curiously. "They could have been traders or diplomats. Still, it does sound as though you were raised by a kind and loving family- many end up worse. It seems your luck it very strong."

"I don't recall why they where in Alba, and there were no clues in any of their belongings, no records or letters or anything. My House and my friends are my family now," I said, smiling.

"I understand that- I just also have my blood family, though I am not as close to them as most would be," I replied with my own smile. "Do you have a great number of close friends?"

"Not a great number, but a few. The level of competition that exists in most Houses is even worse in Bryony. I have a few in my House, and a few out of it. What about you?" I replied before having some more cookie.

"I have a couple friends, inside and outside my House, some closer than others," I said after I'd swallowed a sip of tea.

"That really does seem to be the way of things with most of the Houses, or so I've found," I said, smiling. "Hopefully I can count you among my non-House friends now."

"And hopefully I can consider you among mine," I replied with a grin of my own. "I have heard that every Bryony finds uses for their friends though- what purpose do you intent to set me to?" My voice held deep notes of teasing but also just a hint of curiousity.

"I don't use my friends," I said, keeping the edge from my voice but letting my smile slip. Usually the perceptions of Bryony adepts didn't bother me, I didn't really care, but this was one that I could never get past. I looked away from her and took another drink of tea.

"My apologies, I didn't mean it as any more that teasing and wondering how you would turn the joke on me," I protested, clasping my hands more tightly in my lap. "I would never be so rude as to say such a thing."

"I know," I told her, looking back and meeting her gaze. "But I am certain there must be at least one stereotype of Dahlia you don't find amusing no matter who is making the joke. The thought of using someone I care about is like that to me."

"I'm sorry," I said again. "And as a Dahlia I have a very poor sense of humor I'm sure. Either way, there is nothing more I can do that offer a sincere apology and hope you accept. I meant it, I am sorry to joke about such a thing, but how was I to know it would so offend you until I did?"

"I do accept, I was explaining to you why it bothered me… " My voice trailed off slightly and I looked out the window. Things had been going so well and now it felt awkward and off.

"Then it seems like everything's fine," I said with a smile. "I just get tense easily, my House does not teach us very much softness for some things and it can get in the way of our understanding. You have given me understanding and I'm sorry I didn't stop to think." My expression softened slightly. "I won't do it again."
