Thinking for a moment, I looked around and then found something that might work.
"What about this?" I asked, holding up a verbena scented pillar for him to smell.

Inhaling, I squinted for a moment in something almost like pain. "I don't particularly like it, but she'll love it," I said with a smile. "At least, I think it smells like something she'd like."

Chuckling, I held on to the candle as I choose others as well, all varying sizes and shades of yellow.
"Well, get a couple with verbena and the rest unscented, that way she has a choice and in case she doesn't like the verbena after all," I told him, my arms filled with candles as I walked to the counter.

Shaking my head as I marvelled at her balancing act I followed her obediently to the counter. I was never going shopping without her again.

The man at the counter smiled and helped me get the candles set down safely. He began to tally them up and I told him, "Will you have these delivered to my home? We have more shopping to do." I had been in this store many times as well and the clerk knew who I was.
"That's a little much to try and handle," I said to Nic with a grin. I reached up and caressed his cheek. "You look a bit overwhelmed."

Leaning into her caress I smiled. "I'm always overwhelmed when it comes to shopping- so many choices and no guarantee that any of them is the right one." Getting the total I payed silently but with a nod of thanks to the clerk. "Are all women born with this gift or are you just lucky in that regard?"

"I'm not sure about all the other women," I said as I walked him back outside. "My mother thought it was important to be able to find the right gift for someone. Whether she is visiting someone or they are her guest, she will always find something for them. she says it's a sign of caring, and she cares for everyone. We spent many hours together with her explaining the reasons behind the gifts she would give. She always stressed that it wasn't the price of the gift, but the thought that went into finding something personal."
I looked up at him and smiled.
"Mother will love you, you know," I told him.

"Thank you," I said with a warm smile as I gave her a quick sideways hug. "But if she didn't that wouldn't change anything, at least not about me. I'm sure I'll love her, too."

"Eventually my father will love you too… though not at first I don't think," I said with a wry chuckle

Smiling, I said, "That sounds like the exact opposite of my family- my father is the one with the easygoing nature whereas my mother is the difficult one. She tends to look at faults first, which means she scares most people off before she has a chance to see any merits."

"Your mother will like me just because I'm getting you to marry and give her grandchildren," I said with a laugh. "I expect my father will treat you the same as he did the new recruits when he was in the army."

"At least I've already been through that once," I teased. "And I think you're underestimating how difficult my mother can be. After all, you don't even know the language."

"But that's even better, this way I can't get upset at anything she says to me," I told him, grinning. "Ignorance is bliss and all that."

"Very true," I agreed with a smile. "There is that. So, where exactly are we going next?"

"The herbalists," I said, pointing to a shop across the street. "We'll find her some bath oils and maybe a few sachets and then we will be done."

Smiling mischeviously I said, "Well, that will be good. What are we doing after that?"

"Taking the packages back to my carriage to start, and then we are free to do whatever you like," I answered, smiling.

"That sounds like a good plan. What time do you want to go to Desir?"

"Whenever we're ready," I said as we entered the herbalists. "I have nothing planned but spending the rest of the day with you."

"And the night as well," I reminded her quietly and with a teasing tone. Walking over to a row of jars I asked, "What's your favorite scent?"

"Vanilla," I answered, feeling a blush as I recalled the last time someone had asked me that. It had been the first LaValle and I had been together and he drew the bath for me. I needed to see him, I needed to talk to him soon.

"Vanilla suits you," I said with a smile, wondering about her blush and deciding I wouldn't pry. "There's so many, how will you ever pick one for Catalina?"

"We'll stick with ones for what they do, not the scent," I said, leading him over to a section of prestoppered vials. "These are all relation and soothing. I think they will be perfect."

With a look of sudden enlightenment I nodded. "Ah, I see. It seems like you've left the easiest for last."

"I had to let you see the overall plan," I said with a laugh. "Besides, I couldn't start easy that would have given you false hope."

"I've always been a fan of false hope though," I said with a laugh. "Though this way was much more educational."

Laughing, I choose a collection of oils that I thought Catalina would enjoy.
"Anything else you want to get while we're here?" I asked him.

Smirking slightly I wondered if they carried any flavored oil, then decided that what I'd already had in mind would work just as well if not better. "Not at the moment," I said with a smile. "Come on, let's go pay so we can find something fun to do."

I carried the vials to the counter and waited while the clerk tallied them and then wrapped them carefully.
"I don't know how it was for you, but this has been fun," I said, smiling.

"I always have fun around you," I said with a chuckle. "And I will admit that this was the most fun I have had shopping in my entire life. I knew there was a reason I loved you."
Getting the total I paid for the oil and then picked up the package. "Where did you leave your carriage?"
