I had finished making my calls, and even had time to return home and spend time with Shylah. She had made friends with a dog a couple houses down and they were romping about the gardens. I was pleased, I felt guilty having been absent so much. It would be better once Nic was moved in.
I had left my carriage down the street, choosing to walk the last bit of distance to the fountain. I arrived a little early, so I took a seat on one of the benches and watched the people as I waited.

By coincidence I had managed to arrive from the opposite direction in which she was sitting. Grinning a little wildly I walked up behind her and said quietly, "Good afternoon again, Leyna." Even from the back she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and I lay a soft kiss on the top of her head.

A beaming smile broke out on my face when I heard his voice. I looked up and met his gaze.
"Good afternoon, Nic," I said, a little dizzy with happiness at seeing him. "I missed you."

"I missed you too," I said, running a hand through her hair and grinning to see her so happy. "How did your morning go?"

"It went well. I even had time to stop by home. Shylah's made a new friend, the pair of them were wreaking havoc on the gardens," I said with a smile.
I reached up, and grabbing him gently by the collar of his shirt, pulled him down to where I could kiss him. The angle made it wonderfully erotic, and I thought how we would have to do this again in a more private setting.

Kissing her back I ran my hands down her neck and then stood up. "I'm glad Shylah made a friend- just be careful of going too close to that little den she's making. It seems like she's trying to start a spoiled little pack of her own. Your garden will be filled with ankle-biting puppies before you know it," I replied with a chuckle. "I've gotten most of my things packed and Emilio offered to do the rest for me before his carousing tonight so I'll be ready to take my things to your house as soon as you are."

"Wonderful," I said, grinning again. "The sooner the better. I'll have to think of a way to thank Emilio for helping you."
I stood up and came around the bench, wrapping my arms around him.
"I love you," I sighed happily.

Smiling, I hugged her close. "I love you too. Now, where are we going to start? Any ideas?"

Pressing myself closer, I grinned mischievously.
"Oh, I have lots of ideas where to start," I told him, letting my voice drop slightly. "I suppose you mean shopping though."

My hands went to her hips, resting there and tracing designs on the velvet. "For now I mean the shopping, yes," I said just as lowly and with as much mischief and want in my voice. "But later I would love to hear those ideas and try them out."

With a dramatic sigh, I pulled away enough to take his hand and start walking towards the stores.
"One of these days I'm not going to be able to control myself and I'm going to end up taking advantage of you in a very public place," I said with a grin.

Chuckling, I replied as I walked, "I could say the same thing for you, amor. Where are we going to start?"

"Here," I said, pointing in the window of a store. "Fourteen is one of those hard places, not a child not an adult. It's all about making her feel like a lady instead of a girl."
In the window of the store there was an array of nice, but not extravagant, compacts, hand mirrors, combs and brushes. They were beautiful and even the simplest of ones glowed with d'Angeline artistry.

Shuddering, I said, "She's growing up too fast. I remember when I got to swing her around and get her down out of trees because she'd gotten stuck." Smiling at the selection of things I sighed happily. "I'm so glad you agreed to come along and help me. I'd never have thought of anything like this."

"I find it comforting that you don't think like a fourteen year old girl," I said with a smile." If you think it's hard with your little sister, just wait until it's your own daughter turning fourteen."
With a laugh I led him inside.

With a playful growl I said, "She'd better not think like my sister. The things she's written about in her diary- and she's just my little hermana!" Realizing how that sounded I quickly amended, "Well, she left it out in the study and I didn't know what it was. I didn't mean to read it."
Looking around for a moment I turned to Leyna and smiled again. "She likes yellow, any shade."

Biting my tongue to stop from teasing him, he really did seem to be having enough trouble with the idea of his sister growing up, I led him over to a section where I could see some yellow.
"Oh, isn't this pretty?" I asked, picking up a matching brush and mirror. They were silver and on the back of each there were stars etched into the metal and a faceted chip of yellow glass set in the middle of each star.

Smiling at her I looked at the set, noticing that it seemed wrong to me, and then I realized why; it looked entirely too grown-up. Probably that meant it was a good choice. "She'd like that," I replied. "I'm still thinking along the lines of bows and ribbons but I knew she would like that so much better. In my head she's still an eight year old, I guess."

Smiling, I leaned softly against him. "We can keep looking if this isn't quite right. There might be something that we find that you can actually see her having when we come across it," I told him.

Wrapping my arms around her I kissed her cheek. "I just don't know that anything will seem right. I told you I was awful at choosing gifts. Add that to Catalina being more difficult that most and I could feasibly rip out large clumps of hair and scream in rage on a trip trying to find something for her."

"let's not do that," I said with a chuckle. "I happen to like your hair where it is. Let's start with these and see what else we can find. I know of some other stores that might work as well."
I led him up towards the counter.
"We might even manage to slip some hair ribbons in with these other things," I told him, ginning.

Grinning, I said, "Well, for your sake I'll leave my hair where it is. If I get her any more ribbons or cute things she may save me the trouble and go for my scalp though."

Laughing, I set the items on the counter as the shop girl headed our way.
"It's all about finding the right ribbons. Something for her to weave into her hair after using her new brush. Ribbons that will catch the eye of whichever boy she fancies."

Flinching, I rubbed my temple with my finger. "I'd rather think of it as 'showing off to her friends'," I said a little wearily. "I'll trust your judgement on the ribbons though. What do you suggest?"

It was so hard not to tease him about this, I was going to have to try harder. Being an only child I had no frame of reference for what he was going through.
"There's a shop just a few doors down that has the nicest selection of ribbons. We can go there next," I told him.

Smiling gratefully I said, "Thank you, amor -I know it's silly but I'm just overprotective of her."
The shopgirl approached and said a total, which a paid with a smile and a 'thank you'. "I never knew there were differences in ribbons," I said with a grin. "It's a good thing I was born male. Well, for a number of reasons," I said, brushing a kiss across her neck. "I'm going to have to thank you somehow for helping me with this."

"There are certainly benefits to you being male," I said softly as the shop girl wrapped the items Nic had bought. "As for a thank you, I can't wait to see what you come up with."
I noticed the shop girl grinning as she handed Nic his package, she even looked at me and nodded slightly.
"Come," I told him, laughing and drawing him outside. "The sooner we finish the sooner you can start thanking me."

Grinning a little rakishly I let her draw me outside and down the street, an idea slowly taking shape in my mind. "Well, I think it's going to be a suprise and it's going to have to wait until after Desir because it may take some time to do correctly," I replied with a playful smirk. "Also, it requires that you trust me implicitly."

Stopping just outside the store I had been taking us to, I turned and looked into his beautiful eyes.
"I do trust you implicitly," I told him, caressing his cheek. "I can't wait to see what you've come up with."
I kissed him lightly and teasingly.
"Come, let me give you an education in ribbons," I said with a smile.

"Oh, I can't wait," I said teasingly in return as we enter the shop. "In what subject shall we start, oh-wise-sage?"
