"We are in agreement there," I replied, thinking of how I had resented Idaeus when he had crashed the private moment Mala and I were having at the coronation. If I was ever to share, the circumstances would have to be fairly unusual.

There was a bit of bitterness in his reply, but I didn’t pry. I took a swig of ale, and shook my head. “Asherat protect me from it,” I whispered in my Father’s tongue. Her prophecy had come true, and I knew that went I went home, I would have to go to the Temple and pay my respects. I hoped she and her son Elua would give me a respite. Both Mirielle and I needed it greatly.
“Ah, sharing,” I shrugged. “I agreed not to be monogamous, you know,” I added at length. Now, I almost regretted it.

"And how's that working for you?" I asked, leaning back in my chair and stretching my legs out.

I gave him a frown, though it was at the idea, and not at him persay – for some reason, I didn’t feel the need to pull up my diplomatic façade in his presence, and by many ways, it was a blessing. “I don’t know. But I have second thoughts,” I told him truthfully. “I….” I sighed, “I agreed to it because she wanted it, and I would never presume to cage her up. But the thought of her in bed with another…” my fist clenched, unwitting. I took a deep breath, and released it, almost disappointed thee demon hadn’t showed up. Unfortunately, that was all me. “Let’s just say it makes my blood boil. I’d rather not know, if you ask me.” As long as it’s me she comes home to.

I shook my head. "You have my sympathies my friend. Seems us one-woman men don't have it all easy. You'd think it'd be simpler." The server came by and I ordered us another round, though it was the last for me. I had a feeling Mala had plans for me when I got home (really, when didn't she?) and I didn't want to return inebriated.

“You’re telling me,” I replied with a shake of the head. He’d said something, though… I laughed. “And to think this all started because we thought we had in common the issue of too many women…” I took a swig of ale, and commented, “Oh, the irony…”

I laughed. "Ironic indeed. So how long are you planning on giving her?"

“I haven’t reflected on it,” I replied with a nod. “There were…” I paused, looking for a way to phrase it. “There were natural obstacles to it until recently. I think it’s too early for me to consider giving her an ultimatum, though if my patience wears thin, I will think about it.” I tilted my head to the side inquisitively. “Why is that? Have you done so yourself?”

I shook my head as our drinks arrived, and I waited for the lad to depart before I answered. "I was just interested on your thoughts on the matter. I don't often run into anyone in a similar situation." And too, I wasn't going to upset the balance Mala and I had, not if I couldn't help it.

“I understand. I guess for now…” I shrugged, “It’s too early for me to act in such a fashion. She hasn’t treated me poorly – rather, she’s been the most patient and generous woman one could dream for. I only want what is best for her, and only she knows what that is.”
I took a drink, and added, bowing my head to the table in worry, “But gods, if it’s not me, may the gods have mercy on my soul.” Truth be, worry was eating at me. In the euphoria of my deliverance, I hadn’t dwelled on them, but there were signs.
She hadn’t retaliated when I’d told her I loved her.

I reached over and clapped him on the shoulder. "It'll work out, just you wait. You'll probably be married sooner than I." I told him with an encouraging grin.

"Yes, but I have a balancing act in my future. Especially since my intended informed me the other day that she wished to speak with my former patron. So while that blows up in my face," I told him cheerfully, "Your lady will come to her senses."

My eyebrows lifted, and my budding concern for myself was replaced by one of understanding. “Elua, here’s hoping no blood will be shed,” I said. And then it hit me that was something my father would have said, and I sighed. This was Terre d’Ange, not La Serenissima. My mother’s people. “So your intended knows about your paternity, then?”

"Amen," I murmured. Oh, if only he knew how I prayed for no bloodshed. Things were calmer now, but...
"Aye. I felt I had to tell her about the contract when she asked me to leave Valerian, as S... As my patron didn't know the results of our time together."

His body language told a world of anguish, and I patted his back awkwardly, deciding soone rather than later to keep my hands to myself. I never was very demonstrative towards men. I noted his lapsus, something to think on later. Perhaps there was something there, and maybe not. One way or the other, it wasn't the moment to reflect on it.
"I see. And I take it the two women don't like to share, is that so?" I asked with a wry smile.

"Is that so?" I asked, smiling amusedly. "I wonder how you intend to do so. Is there any tip you'd like to share with me?" Elua, I wondered how one who had trouble sharing could coax others into it. That... yes, that, indeed, took a great deal of talent.

"I spent twelve years in the Night Court. You pick things up along the way," I told him with a smile. "As for my women, it will take a lot of patience to see this through. Patience, understanding, and a bunch of love."

“Yes, to love,” I replied with a smile. “May it lift us, and not break us.” I paused a moment and enjoyed the companionable silence men offer each other so naturally. “So will you be attending the Hunt Fete, then?” I asked after a while, genuinely curious.

“The in-laws, huh?” I asked with a teasing grin. That set me to think of my own potential in-laws. Or in-law. Right. He wasn’t even related to her, though she’d made it clear he mattered. August. I didn’t hate him, but good gods, he unsettled me – mostly because I didn’t think he liked me very much.

I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Well that will be definitely interesting,” I replied. “Interesting enough to warrant another drink when it’s done, and a full account, if you don’t mind,” I added, very amused. That was pure schadenfreude on my part - at least, sleeping with August wasn't on my record. Not that I favored men, anyway.
