I looked up from the menu with a puzzled look. "No..."

Seeing her expression I chuckled and stroked her cheek. "It's a long story and a bad joke," I explained. "Don't think on it too long."

My expression cleared, and I shook my head with a smile. "I shall take your word on the matter, and think on it no more," I teased. Nodding to his menu, I asked, "What were you thinking of?"

"I have no earthly clue," I admitted with a sigh as I closed the menu. "I'm really too simple a man for these fancy meals. Do they have stew? Or gruel?" My eyes flashed with humor.

I smiled and shook my head. "Don't you dare think about ordering gruel. The smell will ruin my delicious meal. Which I believe is going to be ginger beef on rice."

"What about stew, oh lady of the delicate palate?" I asked submissively, bowing my head in shame. "Forgive this poor man for suggesting the gruel."

"Stew should be fine." I told him with a little wave of my hand, then gave into the grin. "Forgiven."

"MY lady is most magnanimous," I replied in a chastised tone, smiling wickedly at her. "I had no idea you could be so dominant."

"You set me up as a diva, I'm just playing the part," I teased back, closing my menu and putting it down.

"I'd forgotten," I admitted tragically as I set my own menu aside. ""Luckily, you're so pretty and charming it's easy to overlook."

I was about to retort with a grin when our server returned. I ordered and then let Jules do the same, taking a sip of wine.

Keaira's reply was cut off by the waiter's return and I ordered the fish stew I'd been looking at and then turned to her innocently. "Does the cat have your tongue, my sweet?"

"Only if you purr," I replied easily. "I was so blown away by the compliments, I just couldn't think up a reply."

"Oh, I'm sure a diva like yourself never gets compliments," I teased, pleased that she'd liked what I'd said. "After all, people shower you with flower petals in the streets and faint to meet your eyes, don't they? Or am I thinking of someone else?"

"No, that would be my more famous sister." I fibbed. "She always was the prettier one."

"Impossible," I scoffed. "Unless, of course, she's Namaah herself, and that would make your parents very old indeed."

"My mother would not appreciate being called old," I told him with a smile. It was all in jest, but his compliments warmed me all the same.

"Most don't," I agreed. "Except mine, who doesn't care in the slightest, and would remark that she looked twenty until giving birth to me, which aged her thirty years. She's an Orchis as well."

I laughed at the story. "Well my mother is at Jasmine, and likes to point out that there is plenty of life left in her, and she'll only be old when she feels it."

"Sounds like a fun outlook," I replied with a smile. "There's an air of that all through Orchis. Part of the joy, I guess. What do you think? Are you old yet?"

"Just old enough to know better, but still young enough to do it anyway," I replied with a grin. "What about you?"

"The same age, if that's any telling," I teased. "But then Orchis stay that way until they're dead, I'd expect. Eternal youth through never stopping with the childish pranks."

I laughed. "Why do I have the overwhelming image of you capering through Night's Doorstep, leaving trouble in your wake," I teased.

"Probably because it's true," I replied innocently, batting my lashes, then smiling as the food was brought out and set before us. "Only a bit of capering, though- the rest of the time, it's running away."

I smiled a thank you to our server who smiled back and left us. I raised my glass. "Too more capers and less running then." I toasted with an impish smile.

"Well, we certainly can't wish for less capers," I retorted, eyes wide and expression affronted as I lifted my glass and winked. "And for you, more singing and less hecklers."

I laughed and took a drink. "I have a good luck charm now," I told him with a smile, fingering the glass pendant hanging around my neck. "So I should be hopefully protected by said hecklers."

"I hope it keeps you from any heckling at all," I replied warmly, brushing her hand and so pleased to see she liked my present I could nearly burst.

My own food soon occupied and I ate eagerly but neatly. The stew really was very good.
