I had done a lot of thinking after going out with Shea, and he had been right. I needed to talk to Lessa about matters of the heart and the bedroom. So I went to visit her, carrying a bouquet of soft pink roses and praying I wouldn't mess it all up in the next couple of hours.

It hadn't been a terribly eventful day, which put me in good spirits- the autumn meant a stop to some of the trading ships and the others wouldn't start arriving until earlier in the season itself, so the paperwork was less and the matters of grave importance narrowed to only two or three things, all of which came to her in sporadic spurts of rumor and innuendo from south of Eisande. As there was nothing definite though there was nothing to truly report. It did give me a chance to relax some though and work on my few hobbies- even read a few new books.
I knew Fydor was coming today- he always sent word- but since attending the wedding together and the talks we'd had I was starting to feel more at peace in my own skin. Did I want to wait months more before I could truly touch him? No, but I could survive it, and even enjoy the anticipation and the fact that it was his wish I was fulfilling. Perhaps it truly would make us closer in the long run- and I wanted nothing more than to understand his point of view.
The eagerness for his visit nearly kept me pacing by the door; rather than waste my energy I instead checked the paintings I'd recently completed, the rusty-brown and chestnut colors of my gown bringing my hair into stark focus the one time I dared to glance at a mirror. Blushing, I turned away and forced myself to remain occupied with the matter before me, waiting with ears peeled to hear the knock at the door.

I knocked and was let in by one of the maids. I had no coat for her to take, so I was lead into the sitting room without further ado, to wait while she fetched Lessa. I took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, an attempt to start out this conversation calm. Embarrassment and uncomfortableness could come later.

A petite little maid came in to tell me of his arrival and I smiled slightly, a flush rising to my cheeks- I was so eager to see him, and I'd always felt it to be unseemly to show so much emotion at once. Even so I couldn't stop the tremor of anticipation and I clenched my hands slightly to cease their shaking. It was nearly torture not to ask the girl how he'd looked, if he'd been happy or unhappy, but my sense of decorum and privacy were simply too much. I may have been lovesick for the man but I had too much pride to seem like a clingy woman- even if I was.
With a nod of dismissal I turned and went to the stairs, headed down from my solarium onto the bottom floor of the house and then went to the primary parlor where he's been sequestered. A fresher flush touched my cheeks and I stopped myself just short of curtsying, instead drawing closer and hoping deep within myself that he found me as wonderful to look on as I did him. I missed him in our time apart, though some would say as yet I had little to miss. I knew what he was, and I sorrowed at his absence. "Good afternoon Fydor," I said quietly, a small, sweet smile crossing my face as I sat down next to him but taking care not to crowd him. I knew well how it pained him at times to have me too close. "I'm glad to see you again- truly. I- I miss you."[/b]

She appeared like a vision, and I forgot to stand as I looked at her, a wide smile on my face. She settled down beside me, the scent of her wafting over and filling my senses deliciously. Laima...
"I miss you too," I told her, leaning in and kissing her cheek gently before offering her the flowers. "For you Lessa."

His lips brushed my cheek softly and I leaned into it just a bit before I remembered myself; another flush ran over my cheeks briefly but I refused to let it stay. I didn't want to waste this visit with anything other than enjoying his company and making sure he enjoyed mine. Looking back at some of the emotional upheavals I'd had I was a bit embarrassed by them- there was no reason for him to have to carry the burden of knowledge of my past- and I resolved to stay calm this time.
Smiling more widely I took the flowers, still a bit amazed every time he brought me a gift;it meant he thought of me when I wasn't around and I was deeply touched. "They're beautiful," I told him in utter sincerity, then leaned down and smelled deeply of their sweet scent. "I love them." In a moment of impulsiveness I set the flowers across my lap and leaned over, kissing his cheek in thanks. "You're too sweet to me."

I smiled under her lips. "You are deserving," I replied, very happy that she seemed to like them. I always wanted to see her as happy as possible. "How have you been?"

"I'm very well- even better now that you're here," I told him, cocking my head and meeting his gaze in complete honesty and happiness. "Things have slowed down a little since autumn's started and the harvests have been brought in so I've had to find ways to keep myself busy. What about yourself?" It was so much more interesting to me to hear about what he'd been doing instead, but I knew somehow that he meant it, and that hearing about my life brought us closer. "I've been thinking about planning something for my natal but I don't know what I want to do."
Smiling a bit wider I raised a hand to stroke his cheek, knowing that it wasn't something that he would be comfortable with for very long but willing to indulge myself in this for a moment or two. In the Ruskovian I'd been practicing I added, "And I have been learning more, so that when we visit your home I can speak to your family there. Am I doing well?" I wanted him to like and understand what I was trying to do, it was very important to me. "After my birthday we can visit Marsilikos."

Her thoughts tumbled from her mouth mixed up together. I thought it was just adorable. I couldn't bear the thought of loosing her. "Very well," I replied in Ruskovian, smiling wide. "When is your natale? Will you have a party?"

His cadence was a little different than what I was used to hearing, but that didn't truly bother me at all- the pronunciation was the same and I was used to listening to languages other than the one I'd been born to speak. "I probably should have a party, it would be polite," I replied, even more cheered by his smile though I did look down for a moment. "But I don't think I'm very good at parties and I- I don't really have any other friends to invite so it would be more of a State function."
Eighteenth natales were important turning points for a life- it meant the end of all vestiges of childhood, that you were completely responsible for your own actions and that you received every part of your title in full- as well as the responsibilities that came with it. As much as I wanted to avoid doing anything spectacular and showy I wasn't quite sure how to avoid it. "I'd rather do something quiet, or at least without having to worry about a great deal of fanfare but I'm worried I'll insult someone, or commit some kind of rudeness."

"Do you know what I think?" I asked with a smile as I switched back to D'Angeline, my hand coming up to touch her, using the excuse of tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. "Have a fete, on the day... sooner of your natale. And on your proper natale, we will do something, just two of us."

His smile was warm and bright and I flushed in pleasure to see it, his words washing over me as I leaned into his hand, enjoying the contact and understanding him well enough at this point to know he wouldn't be truly offended. I didn't want to make him uncomfortable, but I also knew the limits to which I could push myself without the tension becoming overwhelming. This light touch, the look in his eyes as they met mine- they didn't so much feed the body as the spirit, and I wanted to be strong of spirit for him.
Raising my own hand I lightly clasped his where it rested on my cheek and smiled again- truly, I never really stopped smiling around him. "That's a good plan- thank you for it, and for the offer to spend my true natale with me. I don't think I can turn that offer down, the idea of it brings me too much joy. But what shall we do with our time together? Make plans, or let things come as they will? I think spontaneity is more your specialty." My smile widened and eyes sparkled in mirth at the end to show my jest.

I chuckled at her jest, drinking in the way her face sparkled with good humour. "You leave planning to me. It will be a surprise day for you," I said with a grin, coming up with the idea on the spot. Seems that spontaneity was my specialty after all. I brought our joined hands down so that I could clasp hers with both of mine.

"I've never had a surprise birthday before," I told him cheerfully, nearly dazzled with how his features seemed to glow in response to my playfulness. If nothing else on earth could encourage me to continue being so forward, this would. It was strong enough to force away any doubts and cause a feeling of flying deep in my chest. Our hands clasped and I felt freer than I had at any point in my life. "But I always secretly wanted one. I trust you, and I'll look forward to whatever it is you wish to do."

I knew he meant it- he always did his best and it showed in the way he seemed to care, the small gestures like his gifts and the pretty white dress he'd sent her, something of a subtle promise that should have scared her a but didn't. All she wanted was to make him as happy as he did her, but sometimes the thoughts of how to do so flew out of her mind as soon as he came into her presence. His skin looked so soft and all she wanted to do was touch it- but she refrained, instead shifting just a hair closer to him and stroking his hands with my thumb as they lay clasped. "I- thank you," I replied after a moment, a bit scatterbrained at the closeness of him.

"You are welcome. Very welcome," I said with a grin. I let the moment pass, then tentatively began my next train of thought. The one that had brought me here today. "Lessa... You know that I wish to show you greatest respect yes?"

His words puzzled me but I refused to let that part of my mind that always assumed the worst take hold. I trusted him, just as I'd said- and I knew in my heart that he truly wished me no harm. "Yes, I know," I told him with a shy smile, cocking my head attentively and ready to listen without judgment, to whatever he said. The tone in his voice was serious, so I knew it wasn't something he meant to say that would have no bearing on the future. "I have never doubted it, not for a moment."

"Well... I am trying to give you respect in the way of my culture. But maybe... I was talking to my friend, and he said that I was not respecting your culture, your beliefs, because I was holding my own. And I think that maybe he is correct," I said as I watched her face worriedly for her reaction. "But that is not my... my meaning of my actions. You know that. But... but I wish to know if my actions make you sad. I wish to know if I am making big mistakes."

This was obviously a grave matter to him and I grew more concerned, but I was able to understand the gist of his meaning even if his phrases were very vague. "I'm not sure of which form of honor you have has you so worried, but I think that we are both from very different places, and that speaking of such things is the only way to come to a true understanding. I will also say that I accept your ways, even if they are not completely familiar to me, and I only wish to keep you from being uncomfortable. There are times I have longed for more closeness between us but- but if it comes to it I would rather have you happy. For myself, I am content in your contentment."
My voice was quiet and soft and full of understanding, but also a bit hesitant with my own feelings and the slight apprehension that filled me with expressing them. I believed what I said about wishing that communication between us ran more freely, but it was much harder in practice for my shy nature than I would have cared to admit. My affection for him was so strong though, and I was willing to challenge my own nature for his sake.

"So... you are good with waiting?" I asked, wanting to make sure that everything was clear. My face had slowly picked up more colour. I wasn't used to speaking of such things to ladies. "I ask only because I want you to be happy."

"I'm strong enough to endure the waiting," I explained, raising a hand to stroke his reddened cheek; it pained me to see him so uncomfortable and I almost wanted to back down, to simply agree and keep my burdens to myself as always. But I'd agreed to his request and to hide my feelings now- how could I live as a liar? "But- at times, I do wish for more. I can't deny that. I may be a lady, and quiet- but I am d'Angeline, and at times my blood burns too. I feel so strongly for you, and it's hard not to show it as I've been told is right."
My skin flushed as well and I broke his gaze to look down, somewhat ashamed; what would he think of me now? Would he reconsider what he knew of me? Perhaps- but was it right to continue their relationship with a secret like that. "If you don't feel the same passion toward me, I understand- and for that reason I wouldn't have spoken of this. But I don't want to be dishonest in any sense. I don't want you to be unhappy, or to think poorly of me- but I can't shy away from those facts anymore."

My heart sunk as I realized that Shea had been right and that I was doing wrong by her. But then she looked away as if she was the one feeling guilty, and my hand went to her cheek, raising her gaze back to mine. Very deliberately, I leaned in and kissed her.
"I can not think bad of you, not when I feel the same things," I whispered against her lips. "You are so beautiful, and smart, and... like magic. I do not tell you enough. I have much, much passion for you. I am sorry Lessa. I must be remembering that I am not in Ruskovia. I do not know how to court here. Will you help me?"

His hand under my chin was almost a plea to look up and I let him direct my gaze as he would- after all, I trusted him, and I could almost feel his agitation and need to comfort me. His eyes always showed what he was feeling so intently that it almost filled the air in the room and in those brown depths I saw understanding, affection- and what could have been regret. Oh Elua, please no regret...
Then he kissed me and I simply let myself be in that moment for a time, nearly floating in pleasure and somewhere between senselessly happy and overfull of something very like love. It wasn't something I had terribly long to contemplate though, for soon he'd pulled away and spoke softly, his lips still brushing my own and my eyes opening again to meet his gaze. "I'll help you in any way I can," I told him in a near-whisper, not moving away in the slightest. "Whatever your wish I want you to succeed. I- I want you to win me."

Her words caused a smile and a wave of relief. I hadn't messed things up too much, I could still fix it for her to be speaking as she was. Gods she was beyond heavenly when she smiled like that...
"You make me very happy Lessa," I told her with every shred of honesty that was in me. "Thank you."

He thanked me and I was almost confused- but I could sense his gratefulness and I only wanted to make him happier. "I'm glad to help you," I told him softly, flushing just slightly and shifting a bit to lean closer against him, though I was careful to keep from smothering him, so to speak. "And I enjoy making you happy, but I need to know exactly what you mean by help. You've asked me what I want- now it's my turn to ask you the same thing."
Being closer I could take in the scent of his skin that much more acutely, and I couldn't tell myself my flush brightened only with shyness at his closeness. Instead, it was pleasure- I enjoyed that smell, savored it, even longed for it. Whatever it was that made his skin so wonderfully warm-scented and masculine I would have kept close every day if only I knew what it was. I would have died at times to have it on my pillow to inhale as I went to sleep to sweeten my dreams.
But not being one to brood or wish for such things- and especially not to say them unbidden- I instead wrapped my arms lightly around his neck and rested my forehead against his shoulder, closing my eyes and smiling as his closeness surrounded me. "Can you stay, just for a little while? Just to be here? I like this..."

"Yes Lessa, I will stay," I murmured in reply, putting an arm around her. I would stay with you forever. It was so tempting to get distracted by the way she pressed against me, the way her scent wafted over my senses, the way I wished I could propose right at that moment. But she had made a request of me, and I was loath to deny her anything.
"I want to make you happy," I murmured after a moment. "I want to have you see that I will be good husband one day. I do not know how to be myself in Terre d'Ange. Only in Ruskovia. But I want to be trying. I want you to tell me things like... like when you said that you want to go to fetes with me. It is not something I think about, because it is different at home."

How to be himself? Perhaps, in this way, I could truly help him; after all, hadn't I had to fight to be myself in my own culture since my nature and inclination was different from their own? "Yourself is in your heart and spirit, not in the rules that others give you. That part of yourself dictates which rules you follow or break. In Terre d'Ange there are many smaller rules but only one overwhelming one- 'love as thou wilt'. That means people, places, habits, and objects, but it also means loving yourself. You love yourself by being true to yourself."
Shifting slightly I rested the side of my head against his shoulder, forehead in the crook of his neck and turning to try and make this position more comfortable for him. "I know how you feel, sometimes it's hard for me to remember who I am as well. But I'm trying to be myself, to show you how I am so that there are no surprises- and to prove I can be a good wife." Tentatively I reached up a hand and stroked my fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck, trying to relax and comfort him. "I want to be that for you, but I also want to be true to myself. Can you accept that of me?"

She wanted to be my wife. Laima, no words had ever sounded sweeter. I still hadn't asked and she still hadn't said yes, but it was clear what our intentions were. I leaned into her, and laid a soft kiss on her forehead. "Yes, I think I can accept. I am only not good for this. I like very much that we talk. I am not always understanding, and I like very much that you explain. Many things are defeated if we talk."

He seemed to almost be relaxing around her and that was a remarkable sign; sometimes he seemed to hold himself back with such determination that it was a bit depressing and filled her with a sense of desperation that drew her even closer to him. "I know that before some of the things I'd say would make you uncomfortable," I told him in a soft, calm tone that I hoped would keep his spirits high and his mind receptive to what I said. "But I do want to talk, and about some of those things, and if they upset you I'm sorry. It's- not easy for me either."
With a deep breath and a deepening flush I glanced sideways for a moment as I composed my words, then began again. "I understand why we can't- well, you know. Truly I do. But why does that mean we can't touch in any way that brings pleasure? In your land ladies may not speak this way, but I want to know." My fingers continues to lightly caress his neck and just slightly along his scalp.
