She began to blush, and I began to dread where she was going to lead our conversation. And sure enough, the question of intimacy between us caused my cheeks to redden as well.
I struggled for words, silent for a moment before I responded. "Touching goes to... well, it can go to the other thing. And then whispers start. And then lady is ruined, because fathers want virgins for their sons, they want no questions of their grandchildren." I paused for a moment, then continued. "I know the last is different here. But I worry of the first. You are so beautiful, and I want you so much. I am afraid if we go far that I will not stop."

He really didn't want to speak of this- I could tell it by the look in his eyes and the redness in his cheeks, and again I wanted to falter. My eyes moved lower and sideways away from his own gaze again for a moment. How to respond to such a statement? The idea was one I knew from reading, my education in foreign cultures and religion- but nothing more. "I'm sorry, I- I don't understand," I told him quietly, filled with remorse for having made him uncomfortable. "Here it seems more questionable to not act on one's feelings. It makes others who do not understand wonder about a person's motives."

"What is motives?" I asked. She sounded so sad, and I needed to understand why.

He was so concerned, and confused at the same time- and I just didn't have a hard enough heart to continue. "A motive is a reason for doing something," she explained quietly, a slight smile again crossing her face. "I meant that since people here think differently they will see actions in another manner. It doesn't truly matter though- I know your reasons. I accept them, as I do you. I only wish you would not worry so much about what others think in regards to me; I'm used to being different, I'm just made that way. I don't want you to be sad over it anymore- please, Fydor, just do what you think is right. I may not always understand but I will always trust and accept."

I simply looked at her for a moment, a soft smile on my lips. The subject matter might be embarrassing for the both of us, but the one clear thought I had right then was not.
"I do not know how I am so lucky to find you Lessa. You are understanding so much for me," I said, my voice very soft as I allowed myself to stroke down her neck. "I am not sad, I can not be sad when I am with you. I am just worrying about my father. He is very... cold. He will not care that I... that I care for you." I couldn't quite make myself say though three special words to her. "I wish to be true to myself, to my raisings, but also if I want to be in my family, my father must say yes to the woman I marry. Maybe I am not strong man for this, but... but I must care what he is thinking."

I calmly listened to his words- what he said made sense, though the fact that his father was at least a month's journey away made the logical part of my mind wonder how much hold he could have. The emotional side though- it understood the influence a parent could exert, even with their absence. How much did my mother's way of thinking change my actions and thoughts? Far more than most could possibly comprehend. Nearly everyone wanted to make their family proud, whether they realized it or not.
"What you say- I think I see what you mean," I replied in a near-whisper even as I arched unconsciously toward his caress. I wanted to turn my head and kiss his palm- but no, no. I would do nothing to pressure him, even subtly, not even take a chance of it. Care and affection- and love- freely given, or not at all. That was all I would allow myself to accept. I knew what I had to say next, to offer him the same level of explanation that he'd given me, and I managed to fight down the blush that wanted to rise. "I ask these things because I-" A slow, steadying breath and I continued. "I worry that we will wed without knowing each others tastes, and that afterward we'll discover we don't suit one another. Though we may be free before we marry, once most d'Angelines do wed they don't take advantage of it any longer. I don't want the sort of life where to be content my husband would have to go elsewhere for pleasure and to have his tastes satisfied. I'd rather know first, rather than risking my heart and having it broken."
Along with fighting down the blush I could hear the note of my sincere fear entering my voice- that I was only suited to growing bored of, that no matter what all I could expect was a marriage of convenience and alliance, and maybe a sort of platonic friendship. That wasn't the life I wanted, and if I did marry, it would be for love. That part though, I couldn't say at this moment. It would be wrong, to be so weak when it was his concerns that he was here to discuss. I felt my eyes well slightly with that same fear and I turned my head down slightly against his shoulder so he couldn't see them glisten. It would only hurt him to think me sad.

The thought that she wouldn't please me, well, I thought it was complete bilge. But it was obviously a great fear of hers, so I couldn't dismiss it out of hand. This was clearly something that needed to be resolved between us.
"Oh Lessa," I murmured, my head drawing up her neck to cup her chin and raise her eyes to mine once more. "My heart is already in risk."

He was so calm- underneath the embarrassment and the confusion, and everything else that he had to be feeling, there was a sense of peace. I blinked the tears from my eyes as he raised my head and I met his gaze, letting my own confused mixture of love, desire, frustration and anxiety. "How can you stand it?" was all I could ask, almost surprising myself by saying it aloud. "How do you keep from going mad with it? To feel something so much, and have no way to show it- I feel like it will rip tear me apart sometimes. I know that it will pass, but.."
Elua, what was I saying? How could I be going on like this, about something he likely knew and understood, but was better than me at hiding? Blushing brightly, I felt my shame return and wanted to shrivel away into the cushions of the chaise. "I am crazy, aren't I? Why do I feel so out of control?"

"Oh solnshyshko," I whispered, my fingers caressing down her neck and over her shoulder, trying to comfort her. "I stop myself with D'Angeline lessons. With visiting you. With knowing that we will go to your home after my brother's wedding. Now is Alexei's time, but it is not so very long that it will be our time. And then... I believe, with my heart, that it will be our time Lessa. I... I never feel like this with anyone before."

So he did feel for me- how much, I didn't know, but when he said this was new to him, as it was to me, I believed him. "Is it wrong of me to be glad of that?" I asked in a matching tone, leaning into his caress unthinkingly, subconsciously wishing he would continue even as I consciously tried to hold myself back. "Happy that you are as confused and longing and new to this as I am. I only don't want to be alone in it anymore.."
Did he understand what I was saying, how I truly felt? I knew that in his culture women were seen differently; perhaps that was part of why he held me so high, so far away that he didn't dare to come closer. As wrong as it was, I didn't want to be alone on that pedestal any longer either. "We are not so different. Lord and lady, d'Angeline and Ruskovian- I think we feel the same, the only difference is how we say it and what we expect. Those are not such different things by their nature."

"I am very longing," I assured her with a little smile, looking down to where her delicate hands lay in her lap, not able to both admit my inner emotions and look into her eyes. My fingers dropped from her neck to hold her hands. "I miss you when I am not with you. I go to learn D'Angeline, and I think of the new words I can use when I talk to you. I was seeing a bird in the garden on one morning, and I wanted you to be there so that you could be seeing too. I wanted you to smile. You have a beautiful smile."
I looked back up to her face. "I am sorry that you did not know how I am feeling. It... I try to be honest for you, but sometimes it is hard to talk about feelings. But I will try. I do not want you to be alone, not ever again. I want to be with you always Lessa. I..." I had to swallow. "I love you."
Oh gods, I had said it.

The words left him smoothly though he didn't look at me as he spoke them- still, I understood why, and their meaning. How could I not, feeling as I felt and wishing as I'd wished for so long? His hands held mine and they were warm, but I was so filled with repressed emotion that I was nearly numb with it. Then those last words, and all I could do was absorb them, let them sink into my mind and heart even as they screamed to answer him.
Before I quite realized it my eyes welled and my arms wrapped around his neck in a hug as I shook slightly with feeling. After a half-second prayer to whatever angel of Terre d'Ange was listening that I wasn't dreaming or being played a fool I kissed his ear lightly, then gathered my thoughts for another second. In Ruskovian I whispered, "I learned Ruskovian so I could say one thing. The rest is important too, but this is the first thing I learned. I was looking for the right time to say it. I love you. I am yours. Please don't leave me behind."

It seemed like an eternity where all she did was look at me blankly. My stomach dropped and my throat closed with fear that she didn't feel the same. But then her arms went around me and she held me tight, and I could breath again. I held her in return, and smiled against her hair. And then she began to speak my mother tongue, and said the words that sealed me to her.
Unable to hold the joy in, I stood, picking her up in my arms and swinging her around, laughing all the while. "Oh Lessa. Nikogda. Never will I be leaving you behind. You are mine and I am yours."

His reaction caught me completely off guard, and only the feeling of his radiating joy and the sound of his laughter kept me from tensing in shock. I hadn't been picked up and spun around since I was too young to be embarrassed when my father did it- at least ten years, maybe more. It was a bit unnerving, but not in a bad way- it was new, and felt free, almost like flying, and I smiled as I remained relaxed. He wouldn't drop me. I trusted him. All at once I was peaceful, happy and complete, and I smiled as I reached a hand up to stroke his cheek. "We are one," I said softly, then lay a sweet kiss on his lips.

I kissed her back, smiling against her lips. I wished that I had more hands so that I could hold her and stroke her hair and touch her cheek. It was a passing fancy though, for I could think of nothing better than having her in my arms. Laima, never had I imagined that today I would confess my feelings for her. I had told myself that I would wait, wait until Alexei was married. But it just seemed the right moment, I couldn't let it pass by empty. And now, as our lips parted, was time again for more important words.
"I left your ring at home, I did not think that today I was needing it. But will you marry me Lessa?" I asked, a large smile on my face. I wasn't on one knee, lit by candle light. I was standing in the middle of her garden, with my love in my arms. Somehow, I liked this way better.

He really meant it. Though he was happy, he was serious, and that could have sobered me if the idea hadn't already been so deeply placed within me. "If I say yes, will you kiss me again?" I asked in a gently teasing tone. "But the answer doesn't change either way. Yes, I will. In my heart I already am."
Resting my forehead against his chest I inhaled deeply, leaning a bit closer against him within his arms. I was comfortable and warm, and happy. It bubbled and swam within me and I only wanted to ensure it would never end. "I love the way you smell," I told him softly, flushing faintly. "When I miss you, I imagine it and it's like you're there. And I do miss you, a lot."

She answered without having to think, and love swelled even more within me. "I miss you too," I whispered, my smile tender. I held her close as I sat back down again while keeping her cradled in her arms. She was small enough that I could have held her for longer, but there was something that needed to be done. Leaning in, I did what she wished, what we both wished, and kissed her softly. "You make me very happy man," I whispered before kissing her once more, deeper this time.

We sat down and I barely noticed, his radiant smile was still so fresh in my mind. Then he said I made him happy, and my spirits grew even brighter, until I thought my heart would burst with so much glee and hope. Then his lips pressed to mine and I smiled- then the kiss continued and I could have swooned in pleasure as I yielded myself to him. I'd meant what I said- I was his in this. If he chose to go further, or stay just like this, I would accept it. Of course I hoped for the latter, but I was so happy the former would be manageable as well. Reaching my hand up to the nape of his neck I cradled his head, my fingers running gently through his hair and a small hum of acceptance and pleasure left my throat. When the kiss deepened I matched it easily and my eyes drifted closed in sheer ecstacy.

She made a little noise of happiness, and it was so sweet to hear. I had a feeling that everything now would take on a greater significance with her now. To say I loved her, to hear she loved me. Being engaged. It changed things, gave every little touch a level of gravity and excitement that hadn't been there before. She sat in my lap, not a drop of tension in her body. It was if all the fears from months of courting had been erased from her mind. We both tended to worry a little too much, but neither of us had a care in the world right then. My hand caressed over her hair, the simplest of touches, but she was mine now to touch. If I wasn't careful it was going to go to my head.
And so I reveled in it, but didn't go further than kisses and little touches. We had our entire lives in front of us now.

There was the same sense of peace and joy as his hands ran over my hair and skin- but I was d'Angeline, and though I'd been sincere in saying I was his, to experience with as he wished, I was hoping I loved someone who could give me the same in turn. I wanted to be what he needed- but not as his quiet wife, but as his equal. How could he trust my words and judgment, or even my encouragement, if I seemed to carry less weight in what I wanted as well?
After another moment I slowly pulled just slightly away, opening my eyes to meet his gaze and brushing his nose with my own. Willing away my hesitation I smiled softly, asking him with my gaze to trust me to keep the boundaries he set, then kissed him sweetly. At my own pace I deepened it, eyes drifting closed again in bliss, then brushed his tongue lightly with my own while waiting for his reaction. I wasn't trying to push him, and I knew that he had likely experienced all of this a great deal more than I had- but I did want to know if he was willing to experience this as I did, to learn what I enjoyed as I strove to do for him.

She pulled back and looked me in the eye. I didn't quite understand what she was trying to tell me, but when she leaned in and kissed me, taking the lead, I didn't complain. I wanted very much for her to kiss me, to do many things to me. Though I was getting a little ahead of myself there. My hand continued to caress over her fiery hair as she deepened the kiss. I knew that she wanted so much more, maybe more than I was comfortable giving before we were married, but we had promised each other honesty. She knew where I stood, and I trusted her not to try to push me too far. When her tongue touched mine, I moaned softly, my blood heating. She was always able to inspire lust in me. And to think, I was going to marry her.

The sound he made seemed to burn through my blood and I felt my cheeks flush in pleasure and desire as I repeated the action, eager to see if it caused the same response. His own skin was warmer, almost glowing, and it fed that same ember of heat within me until I wanted only to lose myself, to forget all considerations and simply go where my heart and desires led me. But wanting to and doing were different things, and I realized that the likelihood of it ever truly being about what I wanted was slim. For now I could accept that. Even still my hand at the nape of his neck began to stroke up further into his scalp and the other went to to his chest, stroking the firm muscles there through his shirt. Though there was little contact what I felt heightened everything else and I wondered if, when he finally saw and felt of my body, it would do the same to him.

Laima, this was just what her kisses did to me. I couldn't imagine how wonderful it would be on our wedding night. Her hand moved over my chest, her tongue twining with mine, and I was in buyan. My hand caressed up and down her back as the other cupped her head through her hair. I moaned again softly as the taste of her fully took over my senses for a long blissful moment.

His mouth and sounds, even the slight way he moved, was so sweet- but this couldn't go on forever. Eventually something would snap, in either one or both of us, and it would either go too far or have to be stopped at a point where someone's feelings would be hurt. After one last kiss I slowly pulled away, resting my head on his shoulder again and taking a deep breath, trying to slow my racing pulse. "Thank you," I told him softly. "For all of this."

Her lips left mine and I continued to stroke her back and hold her close. I wanted her, but I could wait now that I knew she would be mine one day. "It it very much my pleasure Lessa," I told her with a tender smile. "I want very much to be loving you for the rest of our lives."
I paused then, caught up with all the wonderful ramifications of asking for her hand. "Will you have the time for a trip to Ruskovia in not very long? I know you are busy with your duties. Oh, I am looking forward to you meeting my family at home. You will like my mother I think." I tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear with a soft touch and a smile. "You have met everyone here yes?"

"Yes, the rest of our lives- but I think I'd rather, right now, be loving you now," I told him with a slight smile for the gentle tease- because as much as I did want him, I couldn't push him to that. This waiting mattered to him as much as my responsibility to my people mattered to me. Luckily the throbbing ache that ran through my veins had abated and I was able to think a bit more clearly.
Then he asked about his family. "I've seen them, but I don't think I've met any of them save your brother Sergei," I told him honestly, smiling sweetly even as I did so. "But now I'll have to find a way to manage just that. Perhaps a dinner here, or at your home? And visiting- could that possibly wait until after we go to my home for the winter? It would be so snowy there, and I don't know that our ships can sail in such icy conditions."

"Oh no, we will go in summer," I was quick to assure her. "Winter is not time for traveling. Maybe this summer, or the summer after. It is not for now now. Now Alexei and Olga must meet you. What is better for you, dinner here or dinner at our home?" I was quite excited by the prospect, I just knew that they would like her. I wanted them to like her, I needed all the allies I could get if my father was ever going to accept my choice of brides. I knew only too well what my father thought of my judgement.

"I think having dinner at your home may be more diplomatic, don't you?" I replied with a happy smile, simply glad that he wanted his family to know me. I'd come from a small family myself and to have a large one seemed new and exciting- though I was still very much looking forward to starting my own once we were ready. My smile widened a bit as I leaned up and kissed his nose, then straightened his hair with my fingertips from where I'd mussed it before in my passion. "And then everyone can have dinner at my house another time. Are you going to tell them about us when you go back, or will you wait? I- I'd like to be there, when you make the news known."
