Day before the start of the Midsummer Fair
I couldn't stand it any longer. I didn't know what to write her since Alexei had announced that he was returning home, his engagement with the Queen broken off. So I found myself outside her door, her last letter in my hand as I knocked. I gave my name to the maid that answered, and was showed into the sitting room.

It was later in the afternoon and I'd just finished rising from my chair, pushing away the finished correspondences when a servant entered with the message that Fydor waited for me in the downstairs sitting room. Smiling but anxious I told the servant to make him aware I'd be down shortly and then went to the office's little mirror, straightening my hair as best I could and wiping my hands on a towel to clean the last of the ink from them. It wasn't looking my best exactly- but I didn't want to leave in waiting either.
With a deep breath I made my way down, smiling even wider to see him as I stepped into the room where he waited. "Good evening," I told him softly and with a flush.

I had forced myself to sit, though I couldn't stop from fidgeting. What I really wanted was to pace, but I didn't. Not with her coming in imminently.
"Good evening. I hope that I am not stopping something," I said anxiously, having stood upon her arrival. The sight of her was like a balm on my soul, and I could focus on nothing but her beauty for a long moment.

"No, I just finished," I replied, smile beginning to fade a bit as I looked at him intently and noticed his worry. "Would you like something to drink? Is everything alright?"
Concerned, I sat on the chaise and looked him over intently, trying to discern why he seemed so unlike his usually good-natured self.

I didn't sit as she did, feeling better on my feet. "Is it possible to say things that you have need not to say to anyone else?" I asked. I trusted her not to speak of it regardless whether I asked or not, but for my brother, I had to be extra careful.

"Of course," I assured him, wondering even more at his manner. "I swear not to speak of a thing you tell me to anyone else."

I nodded once, more of a jerk, trusting her whole-heartedly now that I had her oath. "My brother Alexei fight with Sabrina. Loud, very loud. I heard it at a different room. Alexei says he will not marry Sabrina, says he has needs to go home." I managed to keep from pacing by rocking back and forth on the balls of my feet.

"Oh!" I replied, eyes wide in surprise, then caught myself as I anxiously twisted some hair around my finger. "How unfortunate! But surely all people have their difficulties. I read somewhere the like 'The course of love never did run smooth', and it seems apt. Perhaps once they talk things will be better."
Rising slowly I went to where he stood and rested a soft hand on his shoulder, not wanting him to worry even though I was doing so myself. Fydor was the closest person to me at this point and I didn't want him to leave, but I also wouldn't ask him to stay when his family wasn't here. It hurt me to be away from them at times and I didn't wish to see him hurt in the same fashion.

She didn't understand, though she was trying to be comforting, her hand warm on my shoulder. I shook my head. "Alexei is proud. Maybe too proud. He got... he left ring. He loves her so much, I think it hurts like a sword. He swears he will go. If he will go, Olga will go. If she go, all my sisters will go. Then only me and Sergei. If he go too..."
I made myself stop and draw in a deep breath. When I spoke again, my voice was softer. "I am youngest, the youngest. If they go, Olga will try to take me too. She does not like Terre d'Ange. I want my brother to be happy, but truthly, I want to stay here for my happy." I shook my head again, trying to use this infuriating language. "My happiness. I sweared that if Terre d'Ange was better than home, that I would stay. Now I know that any place is better if it does not have my father. More makes me want to stay." I looked away from her, not wanting to make my rant worse by declaring undying love for her. Though I could have.

I thought on his words for a moment, trying to think of the best solution that was unbiased and fair, as I'd been taught- and found myself nearly unable to. I wanted him to stay badly- but not if it would pain him more in the end.
"Fydor," I said in a calm but soft tone of my own, "The choice in the end is yours. You're old enough and wise enough to decide what is best for you. You like being free of your father's control, but what of having the rest of your family so far away? That should be thought of first."
Flushing brightly I looked down for a moment to hide my expression. "Though if you stay- I would be very happy. I- wouldn't want you to be so far away, but you should think of what will make you the most happy."

I was silent for a moment, looking down at her with a smile for her words. My hand went to hers where it rested on my shoulder, covering her small hand with mine. But the moment didn't last for long, reality pressing down with anxious thoughts.
"I want Alexei to be happy with Sabrina," I said softly. "I do not want to make the choice. I am happy here with my brothers and sisters. But I do not know. Sabrina... I do not know," I repeated, then sighed. "My family is here for more than a month, and we have not met her. I do not know if Alexei will be happy if she does not honour family as we do."

"All families are different," I told him sympathetically, tilting my face up toward his again. "But perhaps there will be a compromise."
Every sense seemed to be noticing his closeness more acutely, the scent of his skin and it's warmth as well as the feeling of his hand over mine. My breathing shuddered for a moment before I forced it steady. "Is there anything we could do to make them see eye-to-eye once again? I'll help in whatever way I can if it can extend your stay here."

"I do not know," I said, then laughed bitterly. "It is all I know how to say I think. 'I do not know'. But I do not. I have not met her, I do not know how to start this."

"We could try and arrange for them to meet somewhere on accident- but if things haven't been settled between them it would end up worse," I replied, thinking as fast as I could and dismayed at my inability to solve the problem. The sound of his hopeless chuckle made my face fall and I began to feel as lost in the matter as he was. "But- there has to be something! Some way to make you able to stay."

She started to grow as agitated as I felt, and I immediately felt guilty. "Please Lessa, do not be so sad. I am sorry. Here, let us sit and think."

"I'm sorry," I told him softly, taking his hand and leading him toward the chaise. "I shouldn't have reacted in that fashion, it isn't seemly." Smiling at him to show I wasn't going to be acting so childish I sat down and scooted over to let him comfortably do the same.

"It is alright.I sat down beside her, probably a couple of inches closer than I should have but I let myself. She was my comfort right now, a reminder of what could go right if I did stay here. "Maybe I will talk to Alexei when he is not angry. But I do not know how to help him become not angry. I do not have many experience with losing love."

His last remark brought to mind my own losses in that regard and I smiled sadly for a moment before grinning more sincerely, pleased for his company and the easy way we could speak to each other. "The best thing would be to talk to him, to listen and accept his words before questioning them. Sometimes things happen beyond ones control to make you lose such a thing and all that can be done is waiting until the world becomes clear again. Right now his pain is greater than any physical wound, for those either kill or heal; wounds to ones inner heart only grow worse and seem hopeless until the one true cure of new love, or newly renewed love, can fix it."

"You are wise Lessa," I said after listening to her intently and puzzling out her meaning. "Have you loosed... lost love?" Then I stopped, horrified. "I am sorry, I do not mean to... I speak with no thought, I am sorry."

"Yes- and no, I suppose," I replied with a somewhat abashed flush though I kept my voice steady and my expression serene. "My mother died about a year ago, but that's not quite the same thing. I thought I loved someone once, and I found out he'd died more recently; I'd lost him far before that, though." Reflexively I dropped my gaze with the ache of remembered pain in my chest. "I only found out about his death and where he'd been because his estates are in my lands and he left no will, so it became a legal matter."

Love that was lessened to legalities. A stab of sympathy went through me, and the sudden fear that I might make her face just as sad one day. "I am sorry Lessa," I said softly, my hand going to hers.

"Thank you," I said softly, stroking his hand in gratitude where it rested against my own. "That is why I say just offer what support you can- and don't expect complete rationality. Perhaps he only needs someone to listen while he figures everything out on his own."
Fydor was sweet, but there was a chance he would leave too- though the same could be said for anyone. I felt far closer to him that Simon, so likely if he did it would be even more painful, but I wouldn't lose any of this time or withdraw. I was done with that sort of outlook.

"Reason or sense," I replied, turning my head to smile at him as I peeked through my lashes, clasping his hand a little more firmly. "They say love takes a person's mind and puts it at the mercy of their heart, after all."

For a moment I was almost confused- it sounded as though he were gently teasing me but there was so much that could be lost in the meaning of things. "Toward what?" I asked softly, repressing the inkling of hope I had that it had the slightest bit to do with me, though whether my eyes showed me false I wasn't sure.

"About what?" I asked in a near-whisper, the return look he gave me nearly stopping my breath, leaning closer to him without even realizing it while my eyes never left his own lovely brown ones. "Terre d'Ange...or..."

"Terre d'Ange and perhaps... other things," I replied, voice softened to a rumble. She was so close that a deep breath could have pressed our lips together, our gazes locked on one another. "Your eyes are like the ocean."

"Thank you," I replied softly, smiling and with the since-forgotten blush returning to my cheeks for a bare second, though the warmth due to his closeness likely hid it completely. "I favor yours- dark as the bands on a falcon's wings. They make me think of flying."
For all I was able to play the coquette on occasions which required it, I was not one by nature; I wanted him to kiss me, but knew not how to tease it from him in play. Taking a deep breath I instead raised my free hand to stroke his cheek softly, enjoying the feeling of his skin but ready to pull back if he seemed uncomfortable.
